"Past performance is not indicative of future results."

"But yes, her ability to apply herself towards the defeat of Izzarra's enemies vis-à-vis the average foot upon their backside has been useful, and I appreciate that."

"Let's just try to be cautious until we hear what the King has to say."

"Please don't kick the king's ass.  I doubt it would help our cause."

Martyn lowered the letter, looking over the small group of fellow partisans gathered around them.  He seemed... tired, after the events of the past few days.  Frustrated by the difficulties they'd had, dealing with the smiths.  But now...

Well, now his brow was furrowed in thought.  If anything, he seemed bemused.

"This is... unusual.  A letter from the king?"

"The royal family being under the thumb of the guilds is an open secret.  To receive an invitation like this, after the Smiths refused..."

He frowned as he handed the letter off to the next of their band.  It was strange.  Worrying, somehow, though he might just be looking too far into things.  And if it meant even some assistance for Izzarra, it was more than worth the effort.

"Regardless.  I think we should go and see what this king has to say."

A.

Also I'm disinclined to accept any offer that includes the words "accept its sweet silvery seed," but maybe it's because I have certain standards for my love poetry.

Martyn finished up his bowl in silence, then leaned back in his seat beside Sam.  It was, he had to agree, pretty good.  Certainly in comparison to the campside cooking and rations they'd been dealing with on the road.  Still, having to come back here for help...  Frankly, he could've lived with the rations, if the situation in Izzarra weren't bad enough to make them come out this way.

Still, things were what they were.  They still had a bit of time to wait before they could go pursue their first meeting with the Guilds.  And the group needed a moment's rest, even if he didn't feel he really deserved one with so much work to do.

He sighed and rolled his shoulders, watching the door close behind Esther as she followed Sharne out into the city.

"...Hm.  Kaldach, a question.  You and Sharne were pretty close before I returned to Izzarra, weren't you?"

"Has she spoken to you at all, recently?  She's been acting... more quiet than usual."

I would've voted differently if it wasn't!

B.  Better to just die with honor.

264
B.  Religious tolerance has always been a fool's game, really.  Need to end that and establish a state church derived from one of em with us at the head, really.  Assuming we survive.

GB.  Seeing to the happiness of our people is probably our first concern right now.

I mean, I'll take it.

C.  Not because I think it's a good idea--it probably isn't--but because declaring war to force other nations to open their borders for trade is wonderfully imperial behavior, and we really need to act the part of a proper empire.

This isn't really worth the effort.
