BOOM, BABY! Too bad for Berlin, though...

We probably did more damage to Berlin that the Sectoids would've done. By the end of the mission, there was just one building that wasn't missing part of the ground floor.

(P.S. Did someone score a promotion, with all those casualities?)

No, no one scored a promotion. Maybe because those who died - James Ramirez and Ed Rensign - were the ones making most of the kills in the early bit of the mission.

Hey guys, who wants laser pistols and who wants laser rifles? I've gotten a bit mixed up over the last page or so.

Edit: Guess what? It's TERROR MISSION time! In daylight, but I foresee loads of causalities!

Also bullshit, I was doing plenty of the work, I demand a promotion! *Begins grumbling like Frederick.*

I have no idea what the game thinks of as the criteria for promotion. Frederick has the highest mission-to-kill ratio in the squad, at 3:3, but he wasn't promoted. Everyone else is 3:1 except for Mal and Phantom, who are 1:0 and 3:2 respectively.

And the Science Division is currently working on making PEWPEWPEW weapons for us. About the Laser Pistol, it's pretty strange. It's extremely inaccurate (even for lasers) but it has the fastest auto-shot rates in the game.

UFO Defense is the same, yeah. This means that higher ranked troops shouldn't be used for high-risk, since their loss would be a huge morale penalty on the squad.

About the ranks, you could look them up here. A Squaddie is a Rookie who has done something other than running around.

General Discussion / Re: The human race needs a mega-project.
« on: September 07, 2010, 12:32:36 pm »
Why are we discussing how to drill huge holes through the Earth, anyway? Given the strength of the Earth's gravitational field versus the Moon's, it'll be far more effective to build it on the Moon instead. Also, the Earth is currently our only source of agriculture and resources at the moment, so it probably wouldn't be wise to harm it too much.

Anyway, regarding Itnetlolor's idea of attaching rotational boosters to the Earth to counteract the opposing force that the railgun generates; wouldn't it make more sense to use the fuel for those boosters for plain old chemical rockets instead? That wouldn't require a huge amount of manpower and resources to construct a railgun in the first place.

Regarding your original idea: It's cool to think about, but also really impractical. Even the entire human race would take centuries just to excavate the tunnel, and there's the problem of the magma that's in the way for most of the tunnel. While in the tunnel itself, a potential payload would burn up due to air resistance about a quarter of the way through, if it wasn't already melted by the intense temperature. Also, where were you get the truly enormous amounts of energy needed to power the electromagnets for the tunnel? Also, I doubt that the short length of the muzzle (as compared to the tunnel) would be sufficient to significantly change the trajectory of the spacecraft launching. Finally, once the tunnel was dug, where would we store all the displaced earth?

*snip*
Dang o_o  Wouldn't the uh... railgun part have to be in an airtight vacuum tube, because of the friction that comes from air itself?  You'd get more speed and less chance of incinerating yourself before liftoff :3

Ninjaedit: Keeping the entire tunnel an airtight vacuum for its length would necessitate either building huge gates at each end (which would be useless the instant they were opened) or building a wall that literally pokes out of the atmosphere.

I've updated the OP with a list of soldiers. Does anyone know how to use that "Insert Table" code, so I can make it neater?

Also, it seems like Laser Weapons are winning in the poll up there. To elaborate on the various options:

Laser Weapons are faster to fire and more powerful than normal weapons, and also have unlimited ammo. The downside of lasers is that they're inaccurate.

The Motion Scanner is pretty "meh" in terms of usefulness.

Plasma Weapons are even more powerful, but they require Elerium to manufacture, which will be rare later in the game. Anyway, their ammo can be captured off aliens.

Alien Grenade is simply a more powerful version of the standard grenade.

Mind Probe is also pretty "meh" in terms of usefulness, but it'll help in capturing the correct aliens.

UFO power source/navigation/E-115 is not immediately useful, but will lead to cool things like power suits and eventually hovertanks and fighter craft.

Alien alloys are not immediately useful, but they are a prerequisite to researching personal armor(which will help increase the survivability rate).

Just a quick question; what's the school year like over there in America? I can't make sense of what you guys are talking about.

Nothing like walking around by myself with the Tank. Seems like it's safer than trying to bust into one of those UFOs.

Actually, the Sectoid's shot demolished the wooden fence in front of you. If you'd been just one more square to the left, you'll have been the fourth causality.

Shitballs! Fecking faulty equipment!

C'est la guerre! Do you want to reapply as a soldier again, or do you want to be a HWP operator or Interceptor pilot?

Well, I might revive this if I finish up the X-COM LP. Anyway, X-COM is currently in need of soldiers, sign up now! (three people died in the latest mission)

((Hey, Azzuro, could you invoke the "Ramirez! Do X" meme? :D))

...I don't even know what that means...

Ugh, I don't like my name. Could you change it to "Ian McGregor"? Unless of it course it sort of "breaks the story" too much.

Sure, but it'll have to wait for the next next update, because I've already recorded a large portion of the third one with your name as such.

Anyway, you see that poll up there? GO VOTE!

Rather anticlimactically for X-COM, no one died on the first two missions. Also, someone got promoted!

I'll take dwarfguy2's character, just to start off the game for now. Also, some of your guys might not be the correct race. Or even being the correct gender. for that matter. Also, don't be afraid to submit new applications even if your guy is already on the roster, as there will undoubtedly be tons of people killed in action.
