DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Haha, that's epic. No need to stress or anything as long as beer keeps flowing.

On a probably related note, my adventurer just materialized in tree canopy when exiting fast travel.

hmm... so, apparently my guys didnt figure out how to squeeze a wagon inside a tree, so they chose the second best option...

Reclaiming Rivertrapped the human town has been more difficult than I thought it would have been.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

24th Slate: sea lamprey from a moat kills my soldier when he crosses a bridge - and he couldnt even land one hit. The town is full of corpses and ghosts start to emerge. Soon I have five violent, sadist and simply murderous spirits haunting my group.
4th Sandstone: ghost rips off an arm from my soldier.
24th Sandstone: a weremammoth arrives, kills my miner and furnace operator by biting their heads off, then it swims across the moat and climbs over my walls like a squirrel. My expedition leader was killed by the beast when it landed. Every limb of his body was crushed, apparently he was used like a club (his head was slammed into an obstacle several times) and lastly his head was bitten off.

I sent in two squads, one infantry and one gathered from hunters. Two of the hunters died before managing to shoot, one was slammed against a spearman and another's body was flung on top of a wall. One spearman died instantly as well. Spearman who was hit by his comrade had his arm ripped off (he died few seconds later), and two others soldiers broke their hands. A hunter lost his legs and died of bleeding.

Soldier who had lost his arm to a ghost earlier hit the beast with his axe, which caused it to go berserk and transform into a dwarf... after that it was kicked and punched to death by my recruits.

I have a feeling this might be a source of serious FUN soon...

Bonus: what on earth happened to him?? This was caused by the beast....

Reclaiming Rivertrapped, human town. Day one, dangerous water animals. Sea lamprey dragged my armoured axeman from a bridge into depths. It also harassed carps and pikes and otters like a boss, until my liaison Innu (the grandson of current Empress) came, jumped into the moat and killed the beast... and then he went to conduct a meeting like nothing special happened.

I'm not used to the new climbing mechanics. Just had my entire crossbow dwarf squad climb down from its nice fortified overlook, climb along the wall overlooking a moat (one of them dropped their baby down there along the way), to engage the zombie horde in melee combat. It didn't end well.

And I thought my 1st and 2nd Crossbowsuicidesquad was just acting strange... I found out that my squads had no bolts so that's why they wanted to kick some goblin ass, but it was kinda depressing to see them climbing down the wall, and majority of them managed to break their legs when landing... lost my town thanks to that #whytheyaresoangrywhentheirfrienddies

[Prologue]So, I lost my human town to goblins after seriously thinking no enemies would be coming and letting my military wither away before the siege came. What goblins didnt kill my merry men did instead, as my swordman killed a butcher in his anger, and my military then killled guards who tried to take him to prison and so on, fubar storm. When half of the population was dead (70 living) I abandoned the place.[/Prologue]

I reclaimed the fort only to find out that my starting wagons and people are standing on top of an archer tower. Luckily I had built hatches there so it was no problem... and of course then there are elves standing on my roofs, not wanting to leave the place. Maybe they'll bring me luck?

I dont know, I thought I would spawn at the edge of map or something, not in the middle of my town.

I started to play as humans for change, made a pretty epic backstory for my "fort" and collected interesting facts like the liaison is the grandson of the current Empress and so on, I followed a set of human city building guidelines (max 4 level high buildings, different buildings for different purpose), built flimsy wooden walls and towers and a tomb outside the village and I'm planning to build a stone castle next to my village. The ultimate challenge for me, as usually I dig deep and close any connections to outside world.

Time flies. During year three I noticed I haven't attracted any enemies :( which means eventual boredom. Such a shame, my Rivertrapped could have been ready to deal with beasts and goblins... I dunno if I screwed up something when I edited files in order to play humans. I'm somewhat reluctant to return to my previous dorf fort now...

And here I thought bucklers were the only thing marksdwarves were able to use :(

I had this bug some time ago, I was dealing with goblin bandits and my dwarves just stood next to enemy archers. Luckily they were legendary dodgers and shit so no one was actually hurt. My second squad came and dealt with those pests.

Otherwise I haven't seen that to happen again, my archers stationed in their towers open fire normally and so on. So only once infantry squad bugged.

After three long lasting forts (20+years I reckon) I finally started a new one, with a single task: magma.

I haven't seen, and hence used, magma in any of the previous fortresses. I consider myself to be a failure when it comes to proper fortress management...

That was fast! highly appreciated, thanks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How often do you save-scum?
« on: August 30, 2014, 02:23:15 pm »
I dont know what the hell has happened between 34_07 and 40_10 versions, but I can't lose a frigging. one. dwarf. unless I want a tantrum spiral hell.

One goblin managed to kill my soldier - whole fortress (100 dwarves) went to fubar immediately. Save scum #1
One civilian was killed by a goblin - whole fortress (130 dwarves) went to fubar immediately. Save scum #2
Two civilians were killed by a werefox - whole fortress (200 dwarves) went to fubar immediately, 50 dwarves dead after one day. Save scum #3

There's nothing I can do. I cant fight, I cant let dwarves outside, I cant do a frigging thing because everytime a tantrum. Ridiculous, I lost 2 hours of gameplay to an event I cant have any control, that's not !!FUN!!. FREAKING TANTRUMS EVERYWHERE *smashes a chair*

Just to make sure - I didn't find that reference offensive at all, on the contrary!

Kuikka: Look up "apple II games" and "Spectrum ZX games".  You might understand the humor more, if you consider some of us grew up playing those first.
I see, we who bornt after -88 can't really recall these gaming platforms. I guess we'll take this as a slight improvement to "looks like this was done with a calculator", ha ha ha :)! I'm glad we caught some old feeling with these animations, really. Gritty style was selected on purpose.
