Can I butcher them and export Catti-tallow biscuits back to them?

Only if you were to also edit your dwarves to butcher sapients. So no, not as-is :-P

Fooled around with the leadership structure a little bit and added in two new positions: the bonetalker/bonedancer (who is their spiritual leader: like a high shaman) and the high chief (who is the civilization leader). You can see them both in the updated graphics below. Both ascend from their more localized equivalents.

Because of their tendency towards thievery, it seems you cannot trade with the Catti in fortress mode - they start off hostile (exporting "terror" ;-D). If you're bent on having them as trading buddies, you may need to either remove that tag in their raws or add item thievery to your dwarves.

Well, what I do is open it up in Paint.net (Photoshop or GIMP will also work perfectly well) and select the background colour using the magic wand tool. Then, once I have it all selected, I delete it. That leaves no colour where there isn't sprite, which in PNG format translates into transparency.

I believe there's an even easier way to do it in Photoshop and GIMP (where you can simply delete a whole colour rather than selecting colours based on tolerance and adjacency), but that I wouldn't really know about.

It's been a while, but I'm back! I finished an Orc set for Valience a couple days ago, but I didn't want to post it until I heard back from him. He gave me the A-okay, though, so here they are:

Orcs
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They're equipped with spears, pikes (though I admit that it looks more like a halberd), bows, hammers, axes, swords, and whips. The two orcs on the bottom row are the chief and his elite bodyguards, respectively.

Hey, Nixy (mind if I calls you that?) would you mind making these two for me, pretty please?

A Shade, simply a shadowy humanoid with a cloak of darkness and a Wight, an undead warrior with a steel sword grafted onto one arm?

I'm sorry for the late response but I'll see what I can do. I've been working on the Wight on-and-off for a couple days, but it's not coming to form as well as I'd hoped. Expect a draft within a day or so.

OK: I just finished up a first draft of the succubus/incubus (though they're lacking children at this point - I may do something more in the vein of the normal human child with horns for that). Let me know what you think, and I can make changes as desired:

Incubus/Succubus (WARNING: Mildly NSFW, given the pixel nudity.)

(P.S. This post also marks the point at which I've wised up and started removing the backgrounds from the actual-sized sprites. It should spare you guys a little extra work when you integrate them into your mods/games.)

This is pretty sweet. Posting to keep an eye on it. Someone else did a race of fox-like creatures that would come trade in the winter, I'm still trying to find it again.

Those are the Vamarii. They're a part of the Civilization Forge mod. Check it out :-)

What is the catti.txt for? It looks like a bunchof centances. how will the cati use these?

I'm guessing you're referring to the speech file. It goes into the "speech" folder that's found in "data". It's used in Adventurer mode when you're talking to a megabeast. When they brag about other entities they've killed, they'll sometimes use race-specific taunts. I figured the Catti warranted a few of their own :-)

DF Modding / The Catti [a standalone, installable race]

Hey guys!

As some of you might know, I started spriting DF graphics a little while back hoping people would pick them up and mod something out of them. Well, I've since invested a decent amount of time into researching the modding system and gave it a good effort. This is my result.

A primitive, forest-dwelling civilization, the Catti are exactly what they sound like: catpeople. They breed like, well, cats, and have a decentralized leadership system with a shaman and chief in each village. Their leadership on a civlization level is a high chief and a high shaman (known as a bonetalker or bonedancer, depending on the gender of the Cattus who holds it).

Their military currently consists of spearmen, swordsmen, blowgunners and axemen (who use a specialized "hatchet"). They do occasionally steal from other civilizations (meaning they'll begin hostile to you) - I'm not sure if there's anything I can do to change that. They use wooden armour and metal weapons. I've tried to bar high-tech metalworking from them, but I still need to work out a few kinks at this point.

There are still a lot of things I want to tweak, but I'd still appreciate any critique. And since I'm going to be out of town for a couple days, why not release the alpha and go from there?

So give it a shot, and leave any comments and observations here. Hopefully they work in Fortress mode OK. Have fun:

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: August 30, 2010, 05:08:44 pm »
Just fought off another goblin ambush. Now I'm just waiting for immigrants to arrive so that my fortress will actually speed up a little. It's been four years now without any contact from the Dwarven civilization (despite the fact that they exist) - I wonder if they were wiped out after I embarked?

Anyhow, too much fortress, not enough dwarves. Everything takes forever to get hauled/built. The fact that the damned children keep throwing parties doesn't help. I'd kill the buggers, except at this rate I may need to expand the population through breeding :-\

I've been a little busy amping up for school lately, but I finally have a couple new ones for you:

Ghoul (I modelled this after H.P. Lovecraft's ghouls: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OurGhoulsAreCreepier)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Djinn (This borrows a skeleton face from Sphr's set)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm tooling around with an idea for adding some m0re races to the game. First off was orks (and then eventually the combined greenskin armies :D). Mainly because I liked playing my greenskin shaman in Warhammer Online way back in beta. But therein lies the problem.

The few orc sprite sheets I've found... well... they don't really mesh well with Ironhand's graphics set. It's entirely possible I've just missed one that does, but for the most part, they don't really fit with the rest of the set. So, if you the time or the will, a set of graphics for the orcs would be amazingly helpful. Not just for my orks, but for anyone else who wants big, mean, and green brutes to beat up their dwarves.

I'll see what I can do about some orcs, though they may be like the Catti: a basic graphics set rather than a fully comprehensive, playable one.

And a couple magic users for those out there who enjoy them! I know Toady's not keen on magic in DF, but I know there are a few mods that add in magic using enemies for the sake of an added challenge: giving goblins dragonfire or the ability to spit syndrome, etc. These are intended for similar use.

Elven Sorceress (This one was specifically designed to fit in with Sphr's elves.

...assuming these are meant to be used for DF, you could make the flower petals grey-scale so selecting the color using the color settings in the raws would set the flower color (assuming I'm guessing correctly how to do the color magic Ironhand (was it Ironhand?) started).

Good suggestion! I'd thought about doing my sprites in greyscale, but still don't know the specifics of the system for colouring them in the raws. I'll look it up and may redo the flower sprites accordingly :-)

You can surely show your Gecko, their sprites are cute and cool. And don't ask for a permission from now on, I won't say "no" in any case :).

And may I use your Illbloom sprite for venus mantrap plant? It needs green flower but I will make it easily. I love the design.

Be my guest! Modify it however you'd like :-)

As a general rule, anyone is welcome to use any of my sprites for anything (and/or to modify them in any way they want) Just remember to credit me if possible.

And a note on requests. I'll never post a sprite someone specifically asks for in my thread without their permission (though I encourage people to share the love in case other DF modders can also make use of it).

As for said Gecko sprite:

And another. I'm not sure if I like the shading on these ones yet, but I'll suspend judgement for now.

Illbloom (A carnivorous flower monster. I couldn't decide on the colour, so I'm giving you two choices.)

Do you need any sprites taken care of? I don't think I'm up for a whole race at the moment, but I wouldn't mind getting my hands dirty with a few monsters :-3
