How can they have bronze but no copper?

No clue, really. Only 2 out of 10 (? didnt really count) civs on the world had access to iron and copper. The rest only had bronze and steel.
I embarked anyway; not having reliable access to iron is always Fun.

Still, the question whether civs can learn to use the ores stays. I suspect the answer is no, but I'm curious nonetheless.

No they dont. Your best bet would be to fish in the caverns or hope for a FB with a shell.

No snails, no snail men, no turtles,
I'm half tempted to use DF-Hack to just "make" some shell.

Well, you do not have any shells, so what? Wall him in his workshop and forget about him.

You could try trapping vermin and hope to get a few snails this way.
Or go and kill giant snails, they have shells as well.

I never had trouble with quickly pressing a->+->c, a->+->c. I set it to repeat after I have completed filling the job list. Agreed, it is a bit unhandy.. but then what isnt in DF?

Hmm, I will look into that - always thought I had plenty of ammo and still some dwarves kept running around with only 2 or 3 bolts in their quivers.
Maybe lowering the assigned ammunition to something like 60 (I rarely see dwarves carry that much ammo in quivers... although that might stem from the same reason they carry few single bolt stacks, i.e. low ammo stored in general), will lead them to pick up a more healthy amount of bolts.
How many bolts/archers do you guys generally have? 1000 ammo for 10 dwarves? 2000 for 10? How much ammo is assigned in the military screen?

I'd love to iron out these little quirks that make me frown upon the military equipment system.

Sitting on the embark screen right now and I'm baffled. My civ knows how to make steel and bronze, but there is no copper or iron available to select - be it in form of stone or bars.
If I make copper and iron items and become mountainhome, will my civ learn to include these metals?
What about trading - can I request iron items from a civ although it doesnt know how to make them?

I feel kinda iffy planning an embark without being able to produce anything better than copper (no iron or cassiterite on my map).

No, deactivating hauling doesnt stop them from grabbing the materials they need to work.

I've read they can still work in workshops.
Make him a strand extractor, this way there will be images of him processing raw candy with his TEETH.

And then Adamantine will cover his teeth and bones, turning him into Biter!Wolverine...

Sadly, no.

Are you certain? wiki says:
Quote
Dwarves without arms are unable to haul items, but are still able to gather crops or work in a workshop. Once created/gathered, the items simply remain where they are until another dwarf comes along to move them.
Sure, it says "arms", but not having any arms is more impairing than just missing hands, no?

The problem I have with this trick:
you'll end up with lots of single stacks of bolts. Unless I've missed something, they never restack them to a full 25 bolt stack again... which can have results like UristMcSniper going into a combat carrying 1 bolt because he thinks he has a full stack of bolts.

(The human caravan tried to leave before I could trade, so I trapped them in and killed them all. All-dead caravan don't notify their civilization, right?)

Well, of course they will not be able to contact their civilization. But they do not have to either: the civs keep track of what the caravan is carrying and where it is going. If suddenly parts or everything of their trade goods has gone missing (either by killing the traders or seizing the goods), they'll know and blame you for it. It doesnt matter if it was you or a gob siege that killed the caravan/diplomat. As long as they die on your doorstep, it is your fault.

Decimate my FPS how badly? I have an i5-2500k with 8gig of RAM.
Not really anything to be worried about. Water only causes FPS hits when it is fluctuating or moving at less then 7/7.

I have to say my PC is really bad, so you shouldnt take my statement as exact measurement.
With your CPU, there shouldnt be much of a problem with a few more tiles of moving liquid.

Also, I do not understand how you are struggling so hard to find a waterfall. I find lots of them on standard generated maps without any of the fancy advanced stuff.
Example:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
If you find a river/brook/stream crossing with different heights (the picture in the middle gives elevation) and high cliffs (the last one) you are bound to at least find a (deep) canyon and usually a waterfall, too.
In the example the river going from south to the west has a waterfall feeding it from the river coming in from the east. I haven't embarked on it, but I'm 99% certain that it is this way.

It's sort of like quantum mechanics - the state of the art image isn't actually determined until you try to view it

This is a granite box. All craftsmanship is of the highest quality.
It menaces with spikes of pitchblende.
On the item is an image of Schrödinger the human. Schrödinger is laboring.
On the item is an image of a cat. The cat is dieing.
On the item is an image of a cat. The cat is living.

Now lets get some dwarven quantum entanglement going to achieve quantum teleportation.

Save the cage incase you ever run into a necromancer. Funny thing, dwarves don't count zombie dorfs as being dead (or perhaps this has been fixed?). Anyway, bring it back to live, recage it and place the cage in the parents bedroom.

ROFL! Pretending nothing ever happened.
It's like when kids break something valuable, glue it back together and then act all inconspicuous.
