DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Glassmaker fey mood
« on: May 16, 2012, 08:07:18 am »
I've just gotten a glassmaker in a fey mood. His only labor skill is glassmaker. What kind of workshop do I need?
Unless things have changed since I used to play, a dwarf might require a magma furnace for a mood.  I think that only ever happens if you've already found magma.

Going melancholy has nothing to do with moods.  It's an irreversibly state caused by extreme or lasting unhappiness.  You can't get two moods simultaneously.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Should I atomsmash 40 dwarven children?

Is there like a master guide on improving FPS? You'd think it had it's own chapter on atomsmashing dwarf babies.

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.31:Maximizing_framerate

Last I heard, turning off temperature has a massive effect on FPS, though you lose magma fun.

Thanks.  Wiki fixed.

The bottom of the wiki page DF2012:Metal industry currently states that 15 "Make steel bars" jobs will produce enough steel for 5 breastplates.  Have things changed more than I realise since I was a regular here, or should this be 10 breastplates?

Breastplates require 3 bars of metal to make according to the wiki, so that would make sense.

Yes, but doesn't one "Make steel bars" job combine one iron bar and one pig iron bar to produce two steel bars?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: maces vs. Warhammers
« on: January 23, 2012, 03:30:03 am »

Warhammer ... takes two hands to wield.

Wha-? Since when? I see that's what the wiki says, but can anyone confirm that?  Seems unlikely given they're half the size of maces.  Note dwarves sometimes use two hands to wield certain one-handed weapons when their other hand is free, but I'm 95% sure hammers don't require two hands and can be used at the same time as shields.

I've clarified the relevant section of the wiki article.  Folks, remember anyone can (and should!) edit the wiki if they find something wrong or unclear.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Forging + Smelting = Material loss?
« on: January 08, 2012, 07:47:53 pm »
Treczoks, you might not be aware that breastplates are a special case.  They're supposed to require three bars to create, but due to a bug, currently require only one.  That bug is the only reason that the smelting a breastplate recovers enough metal to forge a new one.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Where is the wood burning labour?
« on: January 04, 2012, 06:10:17 am »
Pretty sure too it's under farming/related. Even if this makes rather little sense.

For the record, it's under farming because you can burn wood into ash, and convert the ash into potash, which acts as fertilizer that approximately doubles farming yield.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Advice on cotton candy needed
« on: November 01, 2011, 09:38:42 am »
Don't give candy to the recruits, it's a total waste of resources.
I give my best armor to my recruits.  The vets are able to dodge/block/parry a huge proportion of incoming blows, whereas the newbies are far more reliant on their armor.  In addition, the massive weight savings from switching to candy will be of far greater benefit to the newbies.

Ah, I see.  Guess I should know by now that dwarf logic =/= real logic.  Thanks Kogut and Quietust.

steel anvils (300 points instead of 100)
Presumably the reason there are no iron anvils is that the dwarven civilization does not have access to iron ore.  That means they won't have access to steel, either.

Silversurfer, in one of the embark screens you can switch between different dwarven civilizations.  If you re-embark in the same world, pick a different civilization from a different part of the game world.

When I try to designate fishing zones, the game doesn't recognize any of the tiles I'm zoning as appropriate fishing spots, either.
No-one's asked the obvious question.  When you designate your zones, are you designating tiles over water, or tiles of land adjacent to water?  Only the latter are recognized as fishing spots.  Your fisherdwarves fish from the beach, not from the ocean.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Military Training Woes
« on: October 25, 2011, 07:49:47 am »
It sounds like you embarked without any dwarves with military skills.  That means it will take a looooooooooong time to get things started.  Next time take a dwarf with ranks in teacher and some other military skills, so that other dwarves can benefit from his demonstrations.

In your current fort, training rates will eventually pick up as your dwarves (a) increase their skills to the point where they spar frequently, and (b) accumulate ranks in observer and teacher (and student?) which will increase the experience gain of demonstrations.  In the mean time, make sure they're set to carry around drinks and food, which will minimise time wasted doing things that aren't training.  Also, there's no need to deny them iron equipment - sparring injuries are practically non-existent in DF2010, so you might as well have them ready with decent weapons.

You need a three-tile entrance for the caravans though, so you'll either have to make a separate entrance for them, or just have a single wide one.

There aren't any caravans in the current version, but it's something to keep in mind for the future, or when playing older versions.
