DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Roadsaviors (31.08, year 25 after embark)

I assume this world was generated with custom parameters. What settings did you use for caverns?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Do you change dwarf speed?
« on: August 24, 2010, 05:30:12 pm »
And in reply to the topic, I run my dwarves with [SPEED:0], but that is the only thing I change.  I know that it is cheating, but running them at normal speed gets boring fast and I probably wouldn't play if I could not speed them up, I really hate waiting forever for my dwarves to do anything.

Seems like it gets to be a necessity once your frame rate drops enough.

Does modifying the speed require the generation of a new world?

Ah, but where you see impractical, I see epic. I'm still trying to figure out how best to seal it off. Are demons building destroyers? I'd love to have glass windows on all sides but the door and then place a statue garden on each side. It'll be my very own execution chamber, audience and all.

But... starvation is such a mundane way to die...

I punish dwarves in the most ironic way possible.

I go for cruelty. In my next fortress I plan to use dfreveal so I can dig a perfectly straight channel all the way down to hell. Any dwarf who steps out of line gets sent to the 'trap door' room.

You have to go and visit them before they come to experience your hosting.

I breached all of my caverns in the second year. Killing cavern creatures is how I train my military. :(

Susceptible to disease. It should all be over in about two months.

:) One of my early migrants got his right foot wounded somehow about 2 seasons after embark. It was treated by my doctors but got infected due to his susceptiblity to disease. He volunteered for military duty shortly thereafter. He is currently one of my uber-champions, maxed-out attributes, legendary in a multitude of military skills and weapons, with about 100 notable and 200 regular kills to his name. He's still alive, it's been 10 years, and his foot is still infected.

I'm pretty sure he's probably bugged.

EDIT: Just wanted to point out that I'm not using any mods. In fact it's very strange actually, I haven't had a single Forgotten Beast come to visit me, despite numerous sieges by my goblin neighbors.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: New Mayday's Tileset: Font
« on: August 22, 2010, 05:37:41 pm »
In your init.txt file change the default GRAPHICS_FONT and GRAPHICS_FULLFONT from mayday.png to mayday_sans_highlight.png I believe.

The *.png files are located in data/art.

You should mod the cows to explode on death or something, or at least do that easy pink mist mod.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Injured dwarves

Crutches are currently bugged, so if a dwarf loses the use of one or both of his legs, then he will be bedridden forever. You can appoint them to useless positions like "militia commander" or "captain of the guard," or you can flood the hospital and put them out of their misery.

I actually have 3 such legless dwarves in my hospital right now, and I'm trying something a little different. I'm letting them stay there to see if their social relationships deteriorate and disappear over time. Right now they are in the section of the hospital for indigent dwarves (lots of beds smashed together, blood everywhere, dirty, etc.). If they continue to have friends I may sacrifice a few of my nicer accommodations to isolate them from others.

The ultimate goal is to destroy all of their social relationships so that I can call in Urist McKevorkian from the Mountainhome.

Did you select multiple creatures for them to kill at once? I've always found that my dwarves kill like one or two out of the entire group I select and then stop and sit there. That's even if the remaining targets are sitting right next to them.

I have a similar problem to this one. A majority of the times when I tell my dwarves to attack, they just sit there and complain 'soldier cannot follow order'. To get around it I order them to station right next to the thing(s) I want dead, they will do that without a hitch every single time.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Finding enemy on map.

I wish the 'go to' functionality was implemented in the squad kill selection screen. Or if it was implemented like the lever linking selection, which of course needs fixing itself.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma hunting information
« on: August 21, 2010, 05:50:44 pm »
I see a lot of people recommending that you explore the caves to find the straightest path down, but that's really unnecessary. If you penetrate the roof of a cavern with your stairs, just build stairs the rest of the way (b-C-x I believe). Once your stairs hit the cavern floor you can keep digging. At the same time, have some masons build walls around your stairs.

The same goes for when you want to build your pump stack, but obviously make sure you're building everything out of magma-safe materials.

I'm not sure if it removes the flashing arrows, but I love dfcleanmap from the DF Hack pack, it's a godsend.
