DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Military training
« on: August 20, 2010, 08:31:11 pm »
You could try live training. Dig into a cavern. Make the cavern a burrow. Order your dwarves to defend that burrow.

To prolong combat give them training weapons. They will then roam around the cavern, beating up the local wildlife with their wooden training swords, spears, and axes. They should skill up very quickly.

Give them steel armor and the cavern wildlife shouldn't be able to harm your dwarves even if they're rookies.
A Draltha on the most benign possible cavern can destroy a dwarf in steel with ease if it fights back. No joke.

That's why gays aren't allowed in the military. :P Oh come on, it was funny.

Are they drown-able?

In my experience, they are not. I had a forgotten beast dodge into a small pond on the surface. He could never get out, and never died. I just sealed up the pond and went on with business as usual.

I had a similar situation to this one in a recently reclaimed fortress. Before abandoning I had built a roof over my entrance and removed all of the ramps. While designating some tree cutting after reclaiming I happened to go up a Z-level and noticed a single goblin sitting up there. He was peaceful of course due to whatever the reclaim bug is, so I just left him there.

What I're really like to be able to do is view the world map with the same interface as when looking for an embark location, but I can't seem to find the option from the title screen or the fortress menu once I have a fortress on the go.

Any time I generate a world I always make a copy of the data/save/regionX folder to data/save/regionX+1 before actually embarking. It only takes 30 seconds to do and it allows me to go back at any time and for any reason.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Stairs/Hallway pathing optimization

I think this is a pretty efficient one. Uses a 3x3 area.

That looks really good, I'm going to try using that in my next fort.

Nope, I only ever use traffic patterns on dense areas of my fortress on the same Z-level. On the rare occasion that I build multiple spiral ramps I may designate one for higher traffic.

I wish I could see this on a map depot file.

Its hard for me to visualize it. Ill have to give it a shot.

Anyone else have any other info for this thread? :)

This is one someone did with a 5 tile wide spiral ramp.

R = Downward ramp (Channeled tile)
U = Upward ramp (where an above tile was channeled)
. = Mined tile (or empty ground at Z +- 0)
W = Unmined tile

You can mine out almost all of the W tiles, but not those which I've highlighted in red. If you do, your upward ramps will be broken and your dwarves will be stuck.

Dwarf Fortress: What are you, a pussy?

This made me laugh. :)

But I still think Losing Is Fun is pretty much unbeatable. Not only is it an inside joke for anyone who plays, but it's enough to pique someones interest so that they'll want to know how losing can be fun.

Most people seem to agree it's better to use a spiral ramp instead of stairs.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stuck in a hole
« on: August 19, 2010, 08:28:25 pm »
If you have other masons not stuck in the hole you can probably build a staircase down to them. b-C-d for a downward staircase and then b-C-x for up/down staircases after that.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What do you do with your dead dwarfs?
« on: August 19, 2010, 08:12:05 pm »
I usually go with a large room with alot of pillars in it but seeing as my current fortress is named "Ultratomb" I feel inclined to do something better this time around :P

Sounds like someone is addicted to fun.

I build a couple of dense catacombs for regular dwarves. Any legendary dwarf gets a 3x3 room with all sorts of perks inside, including their own gold or platinum coffin. When they die I place them in their coffin and seal up the room with a gold or platinum wall and engrave it. 'Here lies the legendary so and so...' Nobles get the magma treatment.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Sparring/drilling issue
« on: August 19, 2010, 05:48:51 pm »
My method of finding caverns is to just have a miner go off away from my fortress and dig a straight vertical staircase until he penetrates a cavern. Then I have him dig around and underneath and keep going until I've found them all and made it down to the magma layer. Then you can send in military to explore around where your fort is so that you can plan your digging properly. But you have to remember to seal that staircase off with flooring when you're done, otherwise you might find your hunters or fisherdwarves randomly getting picked off by a rogue trog or something.

The best way to train armor use is by getting in fights. That or you can use the menacing spike room technique that someone talked about in another thread, but I haven't tried that myself.

Just layer 12 adamantine cloaks and you've got stuff not even HFS inhabitants will break.

Wait a second, does that actually work? I'll be very sad if it does.
