Just started a DDNe of Makhleb, and found a +6 trident of pain off of a gnoll sergeant - and before that, I saw that there was a +4 glaive of pain in a general store. I can only imagine the horrible ways in which this run will end :(

EDIT: And I just found a wand of hasting.

Tempted to play an AK next, but I already won one last tourney. Note to self: swap to MR when you see an ogre mage :/

Got the Swamp rune with my HODK, and then was Abyssed by an ogre-mage in the Vaults, and ended up dying there. Slightly frustrating, but I definitely could have played the character better. Not a terrible start to the tournament, though. Maybe my play will improve with a few more games.

So, to stimulate some discussion, what combos are you guys planning to play when the tournament starts? Personally, I'm thinking that I'll play a HODK. Always been more comfortable with melee characters, and I haven't played for quite a while, so that should probably ease me in.

I personally like playing on CZSO, mostly because Firefox's autofill makes it really convenient to get to.

I've won two games before, one way back in 0.9 (KoBe) and one during the last tournament (FoAK). I don't consider myself to be a super-skilled player though, and I haven't played the game seriously for several months, so I think I'll be in the Advanced team again.

Well, whenever anyone sets up a thread, I'd love to sign up to be on a team again. Don't play Crawl all that often, but the new changes look good, and it probably shouldn't eat up too much of my time.

The game seems awfully generous with the high-tier items these days. I've already found two T3 artifacts (the Spider-Silk Robe and the Shard of Insanity) while only having done three T1 dungeons, and I've seen plenty of other random T3 and T4 items lying around. I don't think it's a bad thing at all, but it certainly makes the game a whole lot easier. Also, the reworked Sun Paladin is really fun, especially with that free movement ability, which is just amazing.

Eh, I already had three runes, so I decided not to stir the pot. Probably could have gotten it without any real difficulty, but by that point I just wanted to get it over with.

@Graven Thanks for that advice. I cleared out Elf:3 relatively easily although I came out rather drained and with degeneration 1 (which pretty much does nothing), but otherwise no major issues. There was some decent loot - a nice artifact glove with rN+, a +2 cloak of poison resistance, and two scrolls of acquirement. Decided to burn them on wands, since I had all but fireball, healing (which I wanted) and hasting (which I didn't want, since I'm a Formicid) left unidentified. First gave me fireball (sigh), second gave me healing (yay!). Feeling a lot better about this character going forward.

... so basically, the entire late game is harder :-[

How about Elf:1-2 for getting some more experience? Not sure if I want to tackle the Elf:3 vault, but I have conservation, and banishment doesn't phase me.
