Soon, I will have a new computer and this will be one of the first things I re-install.  I need to get acquainted with everything again.

When I come in from orbital landing I almost always get concerned that I am going to overshoot or undershoot.  It goes to show that even though you are not there in the cockpit of an actual spacecraft (feeling the forces, etc.) there are certain visual cues which can be very deceiving.  And that is why they say to always trust your instruments.

Also--and I am sure you know this, Robsoie, given your Orbiter expertise--you should take screens from the replay.  Nice, collapsed-flight-gear-free, screens :)  Oh, man, I've collapsed so many gears.

Yes and when you get to the Gritgate map, you need to find the stairs downward.  Search those tunnels for the entrance.

If steam does another summer sale like last year, end of june to early july, I'd pick it up then for mod support.

It'll probably be dirt cheap sometime during that week.

Let us hope. Though July is still so far away...  :P

(Thumbs up for -66-75% discount on Combined arms = instant purchase)

I just picked up Combined Operations at Newegg.com for $27.99.

I like it.  I had this fluttering thought... "this is how everyone should read..."  But that's absurd... right?  Right?

Excuse me, I'm going to visit my bookshelf.

Looks brilliant; thanks for sharing.  When I get my desktop running I'll give it a try.

Makes sense.  In the past when I have save scummed I lost the area I was in when I did the scumming.  This time it wasn't that because I haven't scummed this character.

I'm still playing 1.0.4160.677 from three updates ago and the game is forgetting areas I've already cleared.  Is there some sort of respawn?  Even then, I should remember what the map layout was but when it re-populates the area is black and unknown.

A valid point.  I agree with you and again I will say that I can't speak to what other people's intentions are.

Where I personally stand on this music issue is that it could be a good thing for two indie games to be able to share these types of things (music, ideas, etc.) to each game's benefit.  However, there are certain steps the companies in question have to take in order for it to be a mutually beneficial relationship.

I apologize if my understanding of the prefix pseudo is different than yours in this context.  It is how I could best describe the "bothered-ness" or "dissappointment" that I felt many of these so called "angry" statements were stemmed from.

If we stop and think about this, can any of us assert that 13 seconds of "cribbed" sound would increase French Rice's revenues? No. If anything, the mix doesn't flow well, sounds terribly spliced, and will aesthetically displease those few who really do place great importance on game intro music.

I doubt that anyone would say that having that piece of Tarn's music in their intro was a malicious or selfish act.  The problem comes in when you are talking about copyright infringement and, in turn, general disrespect (albeit unintentional) toward the copyright holder.

The semantic difference between "dicks" and "dickish" is perhaps a valid point, but it is a fine nuance that easily is cast aside in a heated debate. In fact, while their actions were called dickish at first, they themselves were called dicks a few posts lower. Then it was suggested that they be punched through some drywall. But this was just pseudo-anger, right? Just civil, right?

I assume you mean this quote...

Quote from: nenjin
Dicks you can handle by just punching through some drywall and going on with your life. This actually elevates it to the level of "you're dicks, and you're abusing my copyright."

For that you need drywall and a lawyer.

First of all, no one is being punched through drywall, at least not how I read it.

Second of all, it seems to me a lot like a joke, or at least an attempt at a joke.  I mean, if nenjin is serious, he's got to have some damn strong knuckles or at least the balls enough to punch a lot of walls.  I can't speak to his intentions but I would label it 'pseudo-anger,' yes.  You may not.

Furthermore, I would like to state that I don't recall anyone calling anyone dicks, but rather called their actions 'dickish' (As I in fact did call their actions).  Name-calling is silly but so is expecting that you will be able to use other people's art as your own.  Both of those things are dickish.

The conversation was civil all along until all of the backlash at the perceived name-calling and pseudo-anger.

One thing...  I don't think that you can consider that one comment on the thread I linked to earlier (that capntastic started on their forum) as them claiming that there is precedence to do something like this.  The comments in that thread certainly make me wonder about this companies intentions, but I don't imagine that it is entirely indicative of them.

I also agree that it is a dickish thing to use someone else's copy-written (I assume Tarn has it copyrighted) music without mentioning the original creator, let alone paying royalties or purchasing a license to use said music.  As has been brought up, this is between the respective companies.  In my opinion, lawyers is taking it a bit far; I would start by trying to reason with them.

This is what is known as 'sampling,' or in some sense, 'covering' a piece of music.  Ultimately, because they stand to make a profit from it, they could be required to pay royalties.  Whether or not that will happen isn't up to us, really, and debating it is silly.  Copyright law can be really strict, to the point where posting a video of you playing someone else's music on the internet may be considered in violation of the copyright.  It all depends on how far everyone involved is willing to take it.

Edit:  Capntastic, I just visited your thread on their site and saw this...

I suppose Vanilla Ice is "straight up stealing" from Queen.

This is what I mean.  Vanilla Ice 'sampled' that Queen song.  He also payed a lot of money to Queen to do it.  Not really stealing it, but buying it.

Thanks for the info on the SSD.  I figured it would be something like that, but I wasn't sure and after hearing from you both it is obviously not an issue for me.

I am thinking, right now, that'll I'll get the i7-2600k cpu for as much power I can get at a reasonable price.  Does anyone have experience with it?  What motherboard chipset would fit best?  My current selected mobo is using a single Intel z68 Northbridge... how does that sound?

Also, what is a good buffer range for choosing a PSU?  So if I add up the total draw, should I overpower the PSU wattage?  I know this depends somewhat on the make of the PSU, so, I am open to any suggestions there as well.

Thanks for the input.  Honestly, I could look a lot of this up, but I tend to trust people more than usually out-of-date articles (doubly so for B12 folk).

I have seen many boards supporting the i5 and i7 chips, so I think that is what is important.  Although, I am always torn about whether or not to get the more expensive Intel cpus.

With the audio processing I am doing, the drives do come into play to a certain degree.  The one fear I have of SSDs is that they, according to wikipedia, have a limited number of times they can be overwritten.  Well, there is that and how much more expensive they are per GB.  As for the OS, I expect to be using Ubuntu mostly, but would probably have a windows partition as well.  Good to know that about TRIM.
