And they started out OVERHEATED and you had to CRANK the vents just to get em to work!

Will it be possible to completely bar yourself indoors with a slowly diminishing food supply, as you desperately try to tunnel under your house to the old abandoned supermarket (using only a spade and a few spoons), which you cannot get to by walking outside as the horde has descended upon your home?

A quick rendition of the 'simplest' form of gameplay; chuckin a 'poon by hand.

Right now this is lending itself to more of a 2d flash game (in my head anyway).

Of course, there's tons of different ways to do it, ways to style it, ways to set up the controls, etc.

Go go achievements!

Call me Ishmael: Have one crewmember survive the final battle.

From Hell's Heart, I stab at thee!: Finish a whale with a hand thrown harpoon as it wrecks your ship.

Heres my idea of 'Ahab'

You start in a tutorial with a ship and small crew learning mechanics:

Ship tactics; have your crew take different positions to do different things and respond to weather and environment.
Spearing; how to aim for whales/other prey, using harpoons with different abilities
Movement/Navigation, etc.
Selling/recruiting in towns.

After bagging 2 whales, you meet the great white whale, which destroys your ship and all your crew and leaves you maimed.  You start back in town on a dinky ship with just enough to run it, and a new stat called Madness.  Madness is a good/bad stat which as it goes up gives the captain more strength and allows the ship better survival in adverse conditions, but as it goes up the types of crew you can recruit changes and the events that happen run more to insanity itself.

You then scour the seas hunting and bagging whales and other sea creatures, slowly upgrading your ship again and recruiting.  You eventually begin encountering mythical sea creatures and bagging them too, with new whale types appearing.  Eventually new areas open up, which contain flying whales and ghost whales.  You eventually plunge into hell itself where your ship must tread on lava (and any crew that fall in die, of course) hunting red lava whales and demon whales (and a host of other creatures).  At the end, you confront the great white whale at the edge of creation, where an epic duel occurs (more epic if Ahab is completely mad by then and all his crew have abandoned him or died).

I think that would work.

So tempted to make this game. So tempted.
Do it! There can be no rest without a game of whales and harpoons.
Ahab, the game.
Or maybe just 'Ahab'
Couldn't find it within the first few pages of search, link?

No link, thats a proposed game title, to the previous post.

Played. Impression so far: Grindy (kill/missions for xp) PvP enabled a good portion of the time MMO Freelancer with less stuff you can do and much less freedom to do it.  Plays decently. Good graphics.  Your ship changes its looks ever so slightly as you put stuff on it; sometimes hardly noticeable changes.  To make anything you need a blueprint, no 'skill' oriented crafting it looks like.  No trading, no mining, just missions (and lots of cutscenes).  Decent starting story flow but a few small holes. Every area is an instance that you have to 'select' to go there; some open, some mission centric.  No landing on planets/planet missions.  No walk-around mode; inside the station it pans around 'as if' you were in there looking around.

Game appears to have a cash-shop too; unsure if its pay to win or pay to look pretty at the moment as its not on for beta.

Verdict from me: Still more interesting than Eve, good to jump in for a bit to do some pvp + a few missions, but gets repetitive really quick for a long session.

A new client is being prepped, you can download it after they put it back up later today (most likely).

A picture Haxus (the lead dev) took in Shores of Hazeron of my carrier/mothership with 13 ships attached (one out on a scouting mission) and a station docked in the back.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If after your month you want more nostalgia but don't want to pay, I suggest Shards of Dalaya (the one I'm forcing myself not to play).  Most of the gameplay experience, but with new lore, slightly different class balance and spells, and seems fairly tight knit and continually developed.  A few other interesting quirks too (adepts, mining, alignment and religion, specialization, tomes for continuing advancement, etc).  Also, a smaller raid paradigm, and much less poopsocking (which seems rampant once again from reading the EQ servers).

Upon checking out the raging flamewars on the forums, looks like they've got THAT part of the classic EQ experience down pat!

I played this a very, very long time ago. Played a Shaman. I remember kiting gigantic monsters solo, like hill giants when I was low level and a dinosaur out on an island between the continents when I was high level. I seem to recall getting valuable gems from the dinosaur... Been a long time.

I had a lot of fun with it back then, but I don't think I could ever get back into it.

Ah yes, Allizewsaur the mega hp dino.  I remember soloing him on my wizard for quite awhile.  Even earlier, the entire guild (which had so much suck in it) used him as practice so people could learn not to suck so much.
