Other Games / Awesome games done quick 2015: Speedrunning for charity
« on: January 06, 2015, 11:36:44 pm »
https://gamesdonequick.com/
https://gamesdonequick.com/schedule
https://gamesdonequick.com/tracker/12   (prizes and bid wars,  etc)

Saw this mentioned in other threads but no main thread for it.  Humble bundle is doing a package that supports the charity with a few games as well, so I should mention https://www.humblebundle.com/  too.

Games done quick is a collection of speedrunners doing some high profile games as fast as possible, and sometimes as weird as possible (there was a tool assisted bot run earlier than used a SNES with a gameboy thing with pokemon red in it in order to write to SNES memory a Twitch chat program so that Pokemon could stream chat and play Twitch.  Yeah.)

The charity they are supporting is the Prevent Cancer Foundation, and they have about $350k as of me writing this.  There are also some random prizes that people donating can enter for as well as some goals for certain runs that can get pledged to (like a 100% run, or choose a character to use, etc).

I'm watching this stuff right now and trying to go back and forth between programming and watching it and its a lot of really neat tricks on a lot of favorite games (and of course if speedrunning interests you, its even better).  Pretty neat stuff.

Week 46 also-no-progress update: finished with The Repopulation and then I got sick, so been recovering.  Hopefully this week I'll get back into it so I can implement A* and then work on finalizing a real game loop.

I had an aneurysm in my left middle ear area few year back.  Burst in the morning but I felt it and jammed my head down and squeezed on it and just barely didn't pass out and throw up everywhere and die.

Err... How the hell does that work?

Upon looking at diagrams, was probably closer to outer ear than middle ear.  Also, it only just barely worked: you go from fine and dandy to nearly dead in about 3 seconds, its not a fun experience.

American healthcare system:

I had an aneurysm in my left middle ear area few year back.  Burst in the morning but I felt it and jammed my head down and squeezed on it and just barely didn't pass out and throw up everywhere and die.  I decided to just write a good-bye letter and hope for the best instead of calling emergency services because I figured I may as well just give the small amount I had saved to family instead of getting shuttled off, killed in some ER secondary infection clusterfuck, and lose all the (relatively small) amount I had saved that would just be given to my brother otherwise.

After surviving (yay, walked off an aneurysm: achievement unlocked) ended up looking around for an MRI.  Took several days to find a cheaper one I could afford, which was in a state away.   A long car drive with a *barely* healed aneurysm is not a fun thing I tell ya w'hat.  MRI doesn't show anything specific (maybe I waited too long) and I would end up needing a much more expensive operation to really see shit so I said "done with that" and didn't go back to the doctor that I payed $250 bucks to just to have her say "well, good luck!" (more or less exactly what she said) and that was it.

The irony: year+ later, the place I went to tries to bill me again for outstanding accounts because they were being bought out, and the secretary accidentally put a negative sign somewhere.  Yay for keeping receipts.

The double irony: I live in Texas and I take care of my grandfather, who has pretty bad dementia from time to time, basically full time.  So I can't get medicaid, and I also don't even earn enough to get subsidies, so I'm basically right fucked out of even getting Obamacare.  'murica.

Playing The Repopulation mostly right now (very, very Star Wars Galaxyish game)

is there any point in buying into the game now when it'll be f2p on release?

Tiny perks mostly, and then of course same point as buying any other game that drops in price later, or playing early access games (and its definitely got some early access woes).

It's getting to the point where they will all just be given tanks and flamethrowers for general civilian policing.

Obviously theres filthy genestealers in the crowds and the only thing that can cleanse them is the righteous fury of promethium THE EMPEROR AMERICA! .  The tanks are of course necessary because of what comes afterwards.

Week 44 updated: Did a little chase logic, then decided I wanted slimes vision to work a bit differently so I made different vision modes (45, 90, 180, 360 degrees) and made it possible to modify them with equipment and junk.  Overall not very much done but at least its something.

Well, theres a small update at least on SoH status:

December 15, 2014

I've received a fair bit of e-mail asking for some sort of status on the future of this game project. I apologize for not answering every single one. This post will have to suffice.

Shores of Hazeron is a gigantic software project, perhaps more than I can get done. I've been working like a madman for months developing a smaller-scale game from the vast code base of SoH. The primary goal is to pull together a complete, concise, playable game that I could get done. It has of course taken longer than expected but its almost there.

Close on its heels, I have another game concept that I will likely pursue. It will also draw heavily from the SoH source code, though in an entirely different way. The goal of this game is the same as the first, to get it done, playable and posted.

After those two games are finished, I may return to working on Shores of Hazeron. I kind of miss it.

I hope that was enough information for the curious.

... exacto bullets. Seriously? Did they attach verniers to a knife or something?

E: Hrm. The method is apparently a "closely held secret". Hope to zeus I didn't just inadvertently violate a non-disclosure agreement or something. I don't want exacto bullets coming through my window in their rockety knife-like glory.

Soon:

Week 43 shenanigans updated: Several attempts to program, at least some stuff came out of it; Roamer more or less is smooth now, and started on CHASE/ATTACK logic for npcs.

*Casts Necromancy lvl 1: Thread embalming fluid applied*

Don't Starve Together, the multiplayer standalone expansion thing-a-ma-jig is on early release for public purchase (which gives two copies for $5 if you already have the game, or I think $20 and includes one main game and 2 copies of DST if you don't) sometime today.  Also, it gets released free of charge to people that own the game after awhile anyway though (and the cost of the main game goes up afterwards).

Brother got me Don't Starve on the turkey sale thingy and it was decent at least, and had quite a few mods... wondering how this will translate into multiplayer.
