I had one fort way out in the cold side of the map and never got any invaders at all.  Also had a map where I got no caravans at all!  Neither scenario is a lot of fun.

That's kind of the opposite of how it works for me, single hunters bring down elephants with bone bolts.  Meat and prepared food are a pretty fair export item for me, plus all the bone and whatnot.

edit: took him to 15+1 woodcrafting ... I guess in 15 years when I can give him orders he'll be pretty good with wood haha

Eh I'm pretty new, I'll try it this way and see how it goes :)  The kids don't bug me, actually it looks like some of them will grow up with pretty massive skill sets.

While that's a really funny feature the first few times around, it gets irritating when certain items get "stuck" after a reclaim and can't ever be dumped or put away, and they prevent construction.  It seems like there is a bug with this kind of thing where an item is claimed by a job, and the job can no longer be completed (abandoned fort e.g.) but the item is still claimed by a job and so can never be picked up.  Somebody suggested magma as a solution in another thread, although for magma-safe stuff (which I often have tons of) that won't really help.  Picking up huge stacks of seeds one at a time gets old too ;)  I wouldn't mind of there was a way to just clear all the scattered items and do without them, but on the other hand that might make reclaim a bit too friendly.

A feature I would like to see:  visibility of relationships, to make it easier to pick out dwarves who probably shouldn't be in high risk jobs.

No, I tend to keep them as busy as possible with mass dumping and all that stuff, and besides it's only the third year - and there was only one wedding announcement I noticed too.  Perhaps the ladies are sporting some really fine bushy beards this season!

There should be water SOMEWHERE down in the caverns if you dig for it, at which point you can make a well - it can be very deep, I don't think there is any limit.

I'm not quite sure why but my current fort has had a huge number of births (at least for me)- something like 10-12 in the middle of the fourth third year.  I'm kinda guessing it's either the larger rooms I set everyone up in, or the fact that for maybe the first two years I had a really tiny meeting area (6x6) compared to what I usually build.  Now that I think of it I don't really know what a "normal" DF birth rate is anyway?

It's pretty either/or really, dropping the ice plug into a well can be very tricky as well if you don't know exactly where the ice is in all levels.  Somehow I got this right the first time I tried it but then I just spent today trying to do it again and kept screwing it up.

Worth noting that if the water you dumped in the room is more than 1 deep it won't evaporate, or at least not for quite a long time.

That's a good workaround, thanks.  The list does show in the order the things were built but when you have more than a couple it's easy to lose track.
