"I told you I was uncomfortable!"  Not quite as much a martyr as the coffin guy but on the other hand I bet that happens a lot more often in Dwarven society.

1187
Not exactly related but I had a miner who was crippled in a very unfortunate early cave-in, and after being bedridden for about a year (no hospital at that point) he roused himself and went down and carved an artifact coffin, I imagine for himself ("I told you I was sick!")

Yeah the problem is, when the ice chunks melt they form a contaminant "water" instead of making mud.  If you do have actual ice terrain though, it's not too hard to survive once you figure out this trick of making a cave in plug cistern.  I've realized that the terrains that are freezing and do NOT have ice are vastly harder - frozen pools on the surface are all you have to work with, if you even have any.

As far as I can tell, if you don't have a ground layer listed as "Ice" in the embark point selection screen, then you just won't have any ice terrain even though your embark area "should" overlap with the adjacent ice area.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Hunting for food
« on: August 06, 2010, 05:27:45 am »
Pretty important to note, in order to really go anywhere with a hunter, you must at minimum build a butcher shop and have a dwarf set to do the Butchering labor; and to really get a huge pile of food, make a kitchen and have a dwarf set to do the Cooking labor, and have the kitchen "prepare X meals" on repeat.  If your map has large critters, one hunter will produce wayyy more food and bones than you can reasonably make use off, and some of it is a pretty good export item for trade.  There's also Leather (tanner's shop) and tooth/ivory craftsdwarf stuff.

Oh maybe it did then.  It left the mechanism used which confused me.

Word to the wise if you're trying to irrigate this way - dropping ice from above onto ice floor nets you nothing, it won't melt.  I remember reading something like this (build a Floor before doing it).  Dropping a large hunk of ice into a cistern and then building your farm below that for gravity flow/floodgates is probably the simplest way to get this done.  Since my first try at the farm is a failure the caravan had a meager 3 barrels of booze, and two waves of migrants rolled in like locusts, that fort is now toast  Anyway that was a great idea, I'll definitely give that more time later on :)

Protip:  Ice supports melt.
ed: no they don't, oops

1193
Sure but wouldn't it be nice to just create a safe area to prepare in and THEN go smash the downstairs neighbors?  :)
Project Farmsplash is about 40% done, I'll come back in a bit with results.

Huh, I did the aforementioned "plug drop" well but I did it my own way - dug down about 5, then dug a well with channel 5x5 3 deep and made a stairway back up, and then went back up to 2 deep and dug out a 7x7 square, and then channeled down in a square around the "plug" of ice one level at a time until it slipped into the well, perfectly safely.  Now that I understand this technique I don't see any reason not to just do a whole (large) farm field this way?

edit: oh well oops, unpaused after the plug popped in and it instantly melted - KO'd Urist McChannelgoober who falls in the well and is drowning.  Oopsie!

edit2: never mind he's made of sterner stuff than a bit of nonalcoholic thin wet stuff, he's fine

A new chapter of dwarven history begins here at this place, Oggembish, "Clubseals".  Strike the earth!
Couldn't really ask for much better...

The cave in/ice cube technique sounds very dwarven, I'll give that a go!

Plants under the snow, what's this?  Like with an herbalist

Scorching type areas are trivial by comparison, if you're quick to grab any pools before they dry up - Freezing just mashes me over and over :/

I guess I can try to turtle through the period with no drink-making capacity, thanks for the advice.

I can't figure out a reasonable way to get past a year or so without what I consider excessive metagaming/cheating.  I guess you could scope the whole environment with a map reveal tool and carefully drill straight for the water while avoiding the bad stuff, but when I do it legit I always get smushed.  I don't see how you can get a farm going at all until you break into the caverns, and when I break into the caverns we get massacred (if we haven't already died of thirst because there's nothing to drink, even though I took 80+ drink in with me)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Safe embark settings.

Then you have the occasional jobs that don't take long to finish or aren't called upon often
- woodcutting
- butchering

Funnily enough, I hunted an elelphant and it took so long to butcher with 1 Butchery that the job took a hell of a long time - high value and high quantity made up for that though.  While it was way more meat and junk than I could really put away it made a pretty nice noob trade item :)
