DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Something rather... Unusual just happened.

Was the wall made of rock, or wood?  I have heard from others that wooden walls can be broken through by Buiding Destroyer 2 critters (presumably forgotten beasts all fall in this category).

The "toppled" message implies it was fully constructed, as far as I've seen partially-constructed walls are not a barrier to pathing at all but I don't know for sure.

a) no, they'll go get what they need to craft a thing whether hauling is off or on
b) I think butchers handle corpses and amputated limbs; I don't bother with customized stockpiles to that degree but I know corpses have their own category at least, and maybe limbs do too
c) no risks for the DFCleanMap utility; DFReveal can mess up your game if you unpause while the map is revealed, otherwise no problems.  If the game appears to be "stuck" when using any DFHack tools, run the "DFUnstuck" utility.

There isn't really any benefit to that, and it's just that many more construction and link jobs before you're ready to "accept guests".  I guess if it's extremely important to you to be prepared for the return of wagons (if that ever happens) then that'd be a selling point, otherwise I don't see any point.

While he doesn't have to reach both sides to build a bridge - if you build the bridge first, and then raise it, you still can't channel out the ground beneath.

This reminds me, I have never gotten a human caravan in 31.16.  Currently in year 6 in one fort, but this has happened with all the others I've tried too.  I can see humans on the embark screen, but they never come visit.  Doesn't really bother me because there's always a lot of OTHER visitors, but this does seem to be a trend.

edit: huh, I guess they just come a lot later now, or maybe their civilization didn't have leaders for it - here they are in year 7!

I have a wave of hellfire imps swimming in my magma moat - that really surprised me :)  Let's see if they swimm through obsidian as well!

You can also un-dump the cages from z->Stocks, it's a lot fewer keystrokes.

My current entrance is actually 3x wide, but there is a constriction to 1x wide at the center.  I don't worry about wagons, they seem to have been broken before I even started playing anyway so I've never accounted for them.

This thing eats Fortress Defense invasions for breakfeast and does not burp.  Fliers and stuff that ignores traps are pretty much all that will ever get around this.

You have to leave a little bit of free floor around the pressure plate, or it can happen that a critter will be stuck on the plate and unable to path off it - as long as something is standing on the plate, the bridges are retracted.  If it has a couple of floor tiles (one on each side is fine) then it will get bored and move off the plate and the bridges will come up again - and it will often cross back and hit the pressure plate again.  Oopsie!

Incidentally often kills friendly pets (not entirely a bad thing).

edit: also the problem of very heavy critters preventing bridges from operating, and yeah fortifications + ranged is probably very useful there, or some magma flooding from above.

Well the point with this trap is zero maintenance indefinitely :)

While there are many variations on pressure plates and drop traps, this seems to be pretty amazing.  Below the bridge can be your favorite invader disposal system, whether rabid war kittens or spikes or magma or simply sudden deceleration trauma.  Enjoy :)
