Very useful to just hit o-F-(cio) and keep people from going apeshit every time somebody spots a free sock or various other things.  Burrows are good for the practical purpose of keeping your dwarves inside a certain area but as you noticed they're a pain to set up, and also you're still going to get tons of job cancel messages for people trying to go pick up things outside the burrow and then realizing they're not supposed to go out there.

There's a sorta exception in floor tiles - you can construct floor, and this will let you place nearly all building types over it, but no other types of construction (e.g. wall or stair).  If you just want to seal it up, you probably want a floor rather than a grate.

I'm pretty sure I've seen them get a couple of things and then stop - but yeah if they stall on something then chances are it isn't the only thing they'll go and pick up once they're not stalled any more.

It's a good idea to increase number of civilizations when genning the world, and to stop history pretty early.  I went with 80 civs on a medium map and stop my history at 50 or 75, usually every civ is alive.

After much sweating getting it out of the ground and many years of painstaking strand picking, my bonehead mayor/doctor just stitched up a kid's cut pinkie with bluemetal.  Mental note to just never leave strands sitting around and smelt it immediately.

Stupid Dwarf Trick I'm trying just now:  Make a couple hundred crossbows, quivers and backpacks, and a few thousand ammo, and enable hunting for everyone, with the caverns all opened up.

If the metal type that a bin is made of has any practical effect on hauling, I can't see it.  Lead bins look like they're hauled just as fast as featherwood bins.

Food is really the easiest problem to solve in the game, between fishing and hunting and farming and herbalism and trading.  Farming is completely unnecessary, you have so many other options, although it's nice to make dye or textile fibre or whatever.

Contents of maps vary a lot, sedimentary layers vary in what they contain - sometimes they're only 4 or so levels deep and contain crud like talc instead of magnetite.  Sometimes they're 7 or 8 levels deep and contain all three flavors of iron, it's hard to predict.  Actually igneous extrusive maps (volcanic rock) tend to have a whole lot more iron, although [edit] NO coal of course (but yeah there's charcoal).

Had a zombie ettin come visit, and one of my dwarfs punched it in the leg - just one punch in the leg, "bruising the fat" I think - and it died.

Be warned if you genned in 31.14 you won't be getting invasions, that was a major bug in that version.  If you want to play in 31.14 then you probably want to gen the world in 31.12 and copy it over.
