Err, the game is billed as ALPHA; and actually that's pretty conservative, considering how stable it really is and how many working features are in it.  I've paid for dozens of commercial "final" games that were way behind this one.  So some stuff doesn't work, if it really bugs you, stop playing and come back when it's in late beta or final release state.

Have you fully explored all three cavern layers?  It's pretty likely there is some water somewhere down there that hits the border, unless you're just terribly unlucky.

Yeah both of the big river canyon maps I posted have magma pools somewhere on them iirc.  The desert one is pretty spiffy but I hope you like camels; the jungle one's friendlier but the terrain isn't quite as cool.

This seems like a good compromise with the sprawl stuff, and I'm pleased there are options to control how pervasive it's allowed to be.  Thanks for the update :)

Before embarking, you probably want to look at the civilizations that can reach your embark site - hit tab and cycle through the views to see that.

If I understand you correctly, if you mean stuff like vermin corpses, those will rot away wherever they are, inside or outside.  I don't *think* that temperature or other conditions impact that, I think the speed they rot is the same in all conditions.

Building all the walls is a real pain.  It sure would be nice if you could mouse paint walls the same way you can paint designations.

The simple way to drive up the value of a room is just to smooth the walls and maybe engrave them too - both are done with the Engraving labor.  Just (d)esignate -> (s)mooth and your engravers (assuming you have any) will go smooth the stone, and the same for engraving after the stone has been smoothed.
