DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread
« on: August 26, 2010, 02:53:36 pm »
I've had my entrance covered in piles and piles and more piles of blood from trolls, goblins, dwarves, dogs, forgotten beasts, titans and also alot of galena dust for several years.
Suddenly i notice about half of the entrance is clean, how come? I've had acess to a well with water and also soap for several years if that matters.

The link contains a .rar with two exported pictures.
Post the pictures in spoilers instead, or link to them. That way we don't have to download dodgy filenames such as "Hairywhipped.rar"
and the pictures won't take up any thread-space cause you have to click them to open the picture.

Building a circular shaped arena over magma.

There will be pressure plates on the edges (unlikely to step on, but still possible) that will open the cage to a giant =)

Other plates will open holes in the floor making it possible to dodge into magma.

None of the migrants that i nicknamed "Gladiator01", "Gladiator02" are suspecting anything.. They even help with the construction

hmmm, the children would be perfect to practice healthcare on, since they are useless otherwise anyway.

Can i temporary deactivate a pressure plate or do i have to deconstruct it?

Edit:
Also another question

Will ice always become 7/7 depth when melting no matter how much/little water froze from the beginning?
I took water from a small lake to fill some ponds, leaving tiles with 6 and 5 depth of water. the next year when the lake thawed it was all 7 depth again.
Or was it simply precipitation? (snow in my case mostly)

If I were fighting someone I wouldn't be thinking about carp and rivers
Unless you're in the river.... fighting the carp...

EVERY FUCKING INDIVIDUAL BOLTS.
I think you still have to do that in order for the marksdwarves to pick them up. At least the last stack in the bin can't be reached when I've tried.

Dear Urist McMason

When building a wall to seal off a terrifying underground cave, filled with horrific forgotten beasts and weird monsters with five razorteeth filled mouths, at least TRY to position yourself on the safe side?

I would like to point out that in the last spoiler..... he stabbed the troll with a sword...... in the eye.... from behind.
Haha yeah i thought about how that would look like for a while.
Either he stabbed the sword through the back of his head into the right eye, but that would probably have killed him instantly.
Or he stood behind him and reached infront of the troglodyte with the sword and stabbed towards himself so to speak.

ofc the lodging part makes it just so much more... juicy...

Mixing ground texture with dots looks horribly confusing =/
Maybe paint a dot on top of the ground texture in some way so that it is slightly easier to see the dot in texts, but keeps the ground texture for a good looking outdoors environment?

Here, have a diagram:

*pic*

This should explain the wall issues. Dwarf A claims Rock B, which is blocking Dwarf B who's rock is in the way of Dwarf C, who can't get his until Dwarf B gets his which he can't do because Dwarf A is a lazy ass.

It's the dwarven equivalent of a traffic jam.
If stone A is located underneath the wall-designation that needs stone B, you might have a deadlock trouble.

Or maybe they actually put the stone in the construction before trying to remove obstacles under it.. hm...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Blood..

Alot of my fort is covered in both blood and galena. That can't be healthy to breathe can it? A Greyish substance of troll/dwarf/goblin/kobold blood and galena coated all over the place..

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The most painful deaths ever
« on: August 23, 2010, 03:30:09 pm »
With the new combat report system in DF I have noticed some very cool/funny/neat fights but I had this one poor goblin who would just never die:

It started with a goblin siege and there was a squad of mainly hammergoblins standing just outside my already retracted bridge waiting for sunny days or something...
one of my marksdwarves fired a bolt in his leg and he started limping away.

After butchering the rest of the squad while he was slowly trying to flee I decided to send the whole marksdwarf squad to finish him off while the axelords/swordmasters cleaned up some other squads.

Before anyone could reach him he had slowly crawled to the edge of the map, only about 5 squares from the edge and freedom, leaving a long trail of blood behind him.
The first thing to reach him was a war elephant. Seeing how the goblin crawled away he decided to stop him by stomping on his legs with continous kicking.
The goblin went unconscious as his legs was smeared into a big red pancake on the grass. After a little while he actually woke up, and the first thing he sees is an elephant stomping him in the head, fracturing the skull.
This is when the first marksdwarf is in range and starts target practicing on the little fellow. He nails him a couple of times and a few seconds later
another war elephant arrives wasting no time and helps his fellow brother by stomping the legs to a now thin red film on the ground.
Would you belive it that the goblin suddenly regains consciousness AGAIN (his head actually healed to white again) and stands up...

...only to attract a war dog to the scene who starts chewing on his stomach.
Two more marksdwarves and another dog arrives to the mince-meat party. The goblin now has eight steel bolts stuck in various parts of his body but still manages to crawl 2 squares closer to the edge.
The elephants lifts him up by the teeth (wtf?) several times, while the dogs are firmly latched on to his body, shaking him around.
I decide to put him out of his misery and call one of the axe lords over who just cuts off one of his legs (if you can still call it that), but then ends it with a decapitation.

Poor Menacebuds, such willpower is hard to find :P

I also like this fight even though it was alot shorter. I just like how totally one-sided it was and i could really picture the scene of the fearless troglodyte in front of me :P

So what are your most painful deaths?
Watching stuff die in various ways is one of the main features in DF after all :D

I am not yet a sufficiently good player of the game that I need to make it any harder on myself than I already have. :) I already have trouble dealing with even small ambushes - mostly because I try to push for a full steelworking industry, and it takes too long, rather than finding a suitable solution before that.
Learn some fun ideas for traps or make up your own ideas. cage traps are very efficient but ultimately rather boring.

my latest trap is one i got from the wiki.

I've built a spiral of walls, dug a 5 Z lvls deep spiral-shaped pit under the walkway of the spiral, and then covered the hole with bridges.
almost at the center of the spiral i left one tile un-channeled and placed a pressure plate linked to all those bridges.
in the center of the spiral is a chained animal (usually a kitten. that'll put them to some use at least)
at the bottom of the pit i have upright spears in a spiral =)

now when the goblins/kobold/whatever try to enter the fortress, they will suddenly hear a meow from inside the weird building and get that unstoppable urge of mutilating a kitten.
I actually found an ambush AFTER they had fallen down the pit. got a bloody surprise when i was gonna pick up the trash from the earlier spotted ambush when i found a few more unconcious goblins in there. "An ambush! Curse them!" turns out they had already been cursed =D

Are those spears linked to anything?  The way you describe it they're just constructed, which wont damage enemies if they just fall on them (The same way it wont damage your dwarves to walk on them if they aren't being powered)

Check your combat logs.  A drop of 2 or more z-levels onto upright spikes will cause damage.
Yes i can confirm, they do get damaged by the spears. I even have gold statues of goblins skewered by steel spears =)
I needed quite alot of traps though so there's only one spear per trap, while i could have up to 10 for even more gibs.
Got around 150 steel bars lying around so maybe i should upgrade them with new spears :O
