DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fire! Death! Flee!
« on: September 03, 2006, 04:20:00 pm »
Sometimes the river floods when you hit it, sometimes the lava floods when you hit it.  So far for me the chance of flooding seems about 1 in 6.  I bet it doesn't flood at all if you happen to hit an empty pocket rather than opening a hole right next to the river.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Switching games

The other problem is the passage of time - unless your fortress is totally set for the year, you could be invaded and slaughtered while your adventurer is running around boozing it up.  The place could really go to hell quickly.  The other way around, not so much, as a single guy could just take a break for a while, get a house in town...

data folder -> save folder.  Copy everything inside to another place, then go in and abandon your fortress.  Then you can start a new fortress or Adventurer mode and if you want to go back to the first one, copy the current save out and put the old one back in.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Dwarves ignore their own skills when picking jobs
« on: September 04, 2006, 10:02:00 am »
I'm not entirely sure of how the game picks jobs, but from what I understand the workshop sends a shout out to any idle dwarves every once in a while; if it finds any with that job enabled, they come and do the task.

Naturally, if two dwarves are idle at the same time you'd want it to pick the one with higher skill, which it may or may not do currently.  However a lot of the time you don't have more than one dwarf idle at a time.  If the legendary guy is busy eating or placing furniture and the workshop asks for an idle dwarf, it's not going to reject one just because a legendary guy is out there somewhere.  Then when the legendary is no longer busy, his job is already filled so he does the next thing on the list.

It sounds like you'd want the suggestion that others have come up with: workshops built specifically for legendaries or just plain assigned to one guy.

I'm pretty sure that lye has to sit a while before it can be used.

Heh, one of those wording things, like a rusted leather helm or small giant anteater cloak.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Can't rebuild broken doors?

Heh, this happened to me too.  I thought it was a feature, like tha fire man so utterly destroyed it that nothing could ever be put there again.  I even detailed the area, thinking it might need to be re-smoothed or something.  Made the game a bit more challenging/menacing having an open portal to the lava at all times.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Now, I'm no doctor.. (seven hand bug)
« on: August 29, 2006, 07:38:00 pm »
Well, at least in Adventurer mode you can hold multiple objects with the same hand.  For instance, if you have a sword and shield out and you say to pull something out of your pack, you can have that in your right hand along with the sword.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Flooding the river
« on: August 29, 2006, 08:53:00 am »
This is a known bug and will be difficult to solve, as connecting the streams in such a way actually creates a new section of river, which cannot be blocked off.

The moral: Don't cross the streams.[

DF Bug Reports / Adventurer mode: shop generated with coins all over the
« on: August 29, 2006, 07:29:00 am »
The subject line says it all.  I entered a town, went into a shop and there are coins everywhere.  Intentional?  Is he counting them?  Does he have just a bit too much wealth?

I can provide a save from before it was generated and after if you'd like.

EDIT: Hmm, I think one of my former corpses is in the shop, but I don't remember scattering coins all over the floor...

EDIT2: Ok, I did exploit the throwing trick (grab a shopkeeper's money and throw it repeatedly until you become legendary).  But I threw them all in the same place, so someone else must have spread them all over the floor.  Weird.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Butchering cats causes trouble.
« on: August 30, 2006, 07:50:00 pm »
Running out of animals shouldn't be much of a problem, providing the bookkeeper does his job well.  In your trade agreement, just rank dogs highly and they should bring some in cages next time. Theoretically.

YES.  I have trouble with that all the time, and while it may not be a bug (what person wouldn't be disturbed by slaughtering potential pets?) I find it detrimental to the game overall.  Dog and cat breeding gets way out of hand very quickly, and if there isn't some leeway for slaughtering them then it just gets annoying.  At any rate I think dogs and cats ought to breed slower or something, since as it is you never have to worry about food ever once you get up to ~70 animals, that's pretty self-sustaining.  Food should be a problem to solve, not a case of bringing along two cats and two dogs.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Mixed gender animals on newest release
« on: August 27, 2006, 10:22:00 pm »
I assumed gender mixing doesn't mean every other animal will be of the opposite gender, there's just a much better chance of it happening.  In other words, you're just unlucky.   :p

DF Suggestions / Re: Using Pause to Your Advantage

One reason that wouldn't necessarily work is that the dwarves don't check for jobs...the jobs check for dwarves.  Seriously.

DF Suggestions / Re: Risk vs reward with more dangerous areas

You could always search for all posts by Toady.

And yeah, I like your idea, though a lot of people are treating the different zones like difficulty levels...even I'm starting to find calm areas pretty dull.  Spice things up with some zombies and such.   :p
