DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Anti-vampire fortress setup

Speaking of which, do dwarves ever convict someone themselves? Or is it ONLY convicted if you personally convict them?

So I'm positive I have the right guy this time. Another two people died with blood drained from them, one of which had a witness saying it was the same guy as last time, Momuz the engineer. His response this time? he accused a tame kitten. yes... a kitten killing two people in their sleep. You're not fooling anyone, and I thus convict you of like 6 different murders.

And apparently my captain of the guard is too forgiving. No capital punishment for him - just 1200 days in prison.

Unfortunately my last awesome sword dwarf was just killed in an ambush. Goblins this time. I'm making a bunch of spears to start up a few more squads. They'll be starting from scratch too, so they'll be busy.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The new gods!
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:06:50 pm »
I was just browsing the stats and relationships of various citizens to weigh their liklihood of vampirism, and found that the gods have histories!

One of my citizens worships Girus, who often takes the form of a female human and is associated with war and disease. Apparently Girus has cursed a few different vampires to "prowl the night in search of blood", and cursed a few other creatures to assume the form of some sort of monster every full moon. The other diety of choice, Dakas, has a similar history.

Not all dieties have this history, but a suprising number do.

The vampire menace may or may not be over... I'm not exactly sure. We found another dwarf dead - this time one of our guards. One of our mason's accused our mayor - Momuz Logemsanad. Meanwhile they in turn accused the manager. I don't know who it was, but I thought it more likely to be the mayor (since he's also the witness for the other), so I convicted him. he's serving 200 days strapped to a rope. I sort've wish these people would be more willing to do this convicting themselves. This matter needed to be resolved quickly though, so waiting around to see if they would wasn't worth the wait.

I also accidentally said something about one of our miners, which made the captain of the guard suspect a miner for a cold case. Yeah, I couldn't change his mind after the fact, so there are two people attached to ropes for 200 days. Oh well. I'm glad to have the cases closed either way, I was starting to suspect my captain of the guard himself.

Because the person dead is one of our guards, I had to replace him. I'm not happy about that, because they were getting pretty good in their sparring sessions. They, just the two of them, fended off an ambush of kobolds.

Another person was found dead, this time in their own bed. I heard the gossip about him going missing. The second report confirms in my own mind that one of our own is a vampire. the doors have been locked and the guards are going through a bit of extra training. I've also appointed a captain of the guard, Tekud, and built him the rooms he requires.

I did get some steel from the caravan and was able to fill the order of spears .he wasn't pleased when I showed him the training spears. He said "how funny, now make me some real ones". After the mayor saw the ones made of steel though, he immediately ordered two more. Well I don't need any of these spears, so I said "melt down these to make the new ones". Apparently the master weapon maker didn't like that idea, and he refused to make any more. He was struck with melancholy, and died of thirst shortly thereafter. I had to tell someone else to make them. Shame.

We also ran out of drink briefly. and apparently someone ate al the quarry bush nuts. That's the person to blame when there' snothing to eat but plump helmets for the next year. Damn... that sounds like a lot of mushroom to eat.

Made a new world/fort with the new version.

So I find out today that the dwarves have elected a mayor. Oh great... we're barely scrapping by, the vast majority of the citizens are homeless, we're out of metal do to making swords and picks for the people who actually work in the fort, we're harrassed continuously by kobolds, and we now get some pompous mayor to boot? He comes up to me while I'm eating and tells me "I need 3 spears made", my own decent office, my own quarters, dining room, 2 chests, cabiniet, weapon rack, and an armor stand". I laugh in his face, he doesn't laugh back. Bah, if the mountainhomes hears about this...

so I kick some sorry bastard out of his meager room that has at least some of that, and tell the head carpenter to make some training spears. then he complains that his quarters isn't good enough. You know what, Tun Gleamedattic? you have a bed, so don't complain.

He can mope for all I care, he's not getting anything from me right now. "oh, I want a decent quarters, a decent office, a decent dining room, 2 chests, 1 cabinet, 1 weapon rack, 1 armor stand, and 3 spears". I show him that only 10 people out of 50 even have a room at all, and we have no metal to make a spear. He says "I don't care about your problems, just make it happen." Bah, I'll see if I can get the carptenter to make a few spears out of wood.

Oh, in other news we just purchased a tame giant bird of some kind. The elves say it's called a kestrel. All I know is that it's awesome.

P.S. -  agh! this farmer that crazily took over a craftdwarf shop... just went berserk. I sent the guard immediately, who found him attacking my beautiful kestrel. He's been put down, but not before the kestrel was beaten silly. First examination shows brusies on his wing, body, and both legs. Poor guy.

P.S.2 - agh! and we just found a dwarven child completely drained of blood! And before we can even put the child in a coffin, we're accousted by an army of thieves. at least one got away, and we killed 3. Woh... new version is pleasing me.

Started a new fort, and loving a few things. All these little ponds now have ramps ont eh side, so there is no insta-drown of dwarves. Yay! Also loving then dwarf menu (whatever it's called when you press 'u'), and loving the tabs for organisation.

Not much else has happened yet, but it all feels so exciting.

EDIT: as I'm looking at my military, I find out that 5 of my dwarves have an infection. Huh? that's... strange. Some of those don't even have injuries that I know of. Well, time will tell if anything happens.

are you in a cold/swamp biome? i have had similar experiences with each, im presuming frostbite for the cold, and disease for swamps.
never freezes here, and I don't THINK it's swampy. I have one layer of soil, errr... peat and sandy clay. I have lots of trees too... uh oh, let me make copy of the world, abandon, and check this out.

... no. I'm Tropical Shrubland with a northern tip of Mountain.

Though if peat is bad... that might explain why my wells are still stagnant water, even though they were carved out and had water pumped in.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is there an ethical way to train doctors?
« on: February 13, 2012, 05:35:45 pm »
Of course there's an ethical way to train doctors! Toss children off short cliffs. Since they're not useful adults, injuring them isn't a waste of valuable labor, and since they're not nobles, it's ethical to use short cliffs instead of tall ones!
:O

I'm actually saving all my children with the intent of making an entire second generation of dwarves to run the fort, so not using them as lab rats. They're the future man (say this in your best hippy accent).

Modding in practice stations using medical skills though sounds awesome. I imagine using thread + some animal part to train suturing, or using bones + cloth to train bone setting, and some sort of butchering meat reaction to train surgeon. I'm a fan of staying true to vanilla, so maybe my dwarves will just suck at it, but for future versions I think I'll do this.

Woh, no Ubuntu lovers here? Shame, I'm using it and love it myself. So do an extremely large number of Ubuntu users, some 30 million +, compared to Mint's ~0.5 million.

Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit comes pre-installed with 32 bit binaries anyways, so that won't be a problem either way . And if you install the 32 bit version, you're not going to regret it. You don't have enough RAM for it to matter, and basically all programs come in 32 bit versions that are better maintained than the 64 bit versions.

While you can download df that runs natively in Ubuntu, it has a problem that it's missing a proper launcher, and because the version you're using isn't all that polished yet, it's missing an easy way to create a launcher. This is how you create a launcher (since they haven't added a graphical way to unity yet):

DF Gameplay Questions / Is there an ethical way to train doctors?
« on: February 13, 2012, 04:40:35 pm »
My two doctors are dabbling in all skills, and there isn't a way that I know of to teach doctor skills to another dwarf. I have read once upon a time that you can drop a dwarf or stab them deliberately, but I'd rather not scar my dwarves for life by experimenting on them. Besides, that could easily give bad moods I would think.

Is there a more ethical way to train your doctors, so that you don't have to torture your own citizens?

Had a minor strand herself on a floating piece of wall. She, by instruction, dug out the area below her and broke a bunch of parts. Sadly, I'm excited about this, as my doctors are only dabbling in any skill. They have a guinea pig!

And they're not taking any chances. The dwarflady has been diagnosed several times now, and is soon going to be a mummy with allt he thread sewn into her.

EDIT: as I'm looking at my military, I find out that 5 of my dwarves have an infection. Huh? that's... strange. Some of those don't even have injuries that I know of. Well, time will tell if anything happens.

Ah. So you went with a more human method over the stuffing them ina room with a bunch of livestock then and HOPING they don't emo themselves to death.

Human method! HUMAN METHOD! I rage at such an insult, and my teenage dwarves could easily destroy such pitifully unprepared and useless creatures like humans, and without resorting to ranged weaponry, questionable training practices, or traps. Besides, dwarvish ethics specifically says that torturing for fun or knowledge is unthinkable - that's human thinking. Heck, that's goblin thinking, and we slaughter goblins :)

I thought you cannot have metal image decoration?
Apparently you can, as my weapons, armor, and clothing have plenty.

Edit: I love how you didn't notice the only kills with that sword were other dwarves :)

I have 4 charcoal makers and 2 smelters working continuously to melt it down. For a long time there was more than I could handle, and I sold it. If I have surplus charcoal (which is all the time now), I also create battle axes with the metal, and melt that back down again. If I'm low on charcoal, I've been using it in decorations.

All leather/troll fur/ silk crap that they have though is sold to the caravans for anything that I want. Their profit margins are generally over 10,000 these days. I've easily outfitted half of all the citizens in the civilisations I trade with, so there shouldn't be any elves, humans, or dwarves coming to my fort naked.
