See it's cool when someone actually states their case and explains things and goes through the issues point by point rather than simply going "UGH GUYS THIS IS AWFUL [image macro] OH YOU DON'T AGREE WITH ME WELL THEN I'M LEAVING"

So thanks, Sensei, for an honest attempt at making the thread better.

I get what you're trying to say, but your logic doesn't actually follow the way you think it does ("a lot of people are dumb" -> "things a lot of people like are dumb") doesn't add up and it makes you look silly.

A better way of putting it is simply stating the plain truth:  A lot of people really aren't going to want to put the effort into learning a game as complex as DF.  That's fine.

But that doesn't mean we should pre-emptively push people away.

Actually if you try to look at things objectively rather than in a way that fallaciously asserts that "I like DF, ergo I am smarter than most people", you'll realize that it's really just the UI that keeps it from breaching too deep into the fantasy themed strategy/sim singleplayer gaming niche, which is already basically a tiny fraction of videogaming in general.

Pardon my sounding like a hipster, but mainstream attention tends to have dire consequences for small communities in the short run... Sometimes permanently.

Ah yes, the IGF, bulwark of the mainstream masses.

Are people really worried that attention from indie gamers/devs, a ton of which already know about about DF, is going to bring down some sort of plague?  I mean, DF has been mentioned in nationwide publications that people pay money for.  I am certain that The New York Times has a thousand times as much coverage as the IGF.

I'm sure StopSB249.org is an unbiased site to learn the issues from.

If you wait 24 hours (without tabbing away) in adventure mode without entering a command, it'll count as you skipping your turn.

Israel routinely acts like dicks

This is such a huge understatement, and it frustrates me how many people act with complete revulsion when you indicate that since its formation, Israel has launched "pre-emptive" attacks on most of their neighbors.  It's all more than a little unfortunate.

Sadly, one could probably argue (and plenty of people probably do) that their neighbors are worse. Seems like there's no middle ground here: either people pay too much attention to Israel's bad stuff or too little. (If I recall correctly, there was supposedly at one point a rule in the UN saying that Israel had to be brought up every session. I am not making this up (though of course I may be mistaken).) Honestly, I don't know a ton about Israel's badness aside from preemptively attacking every time and the settlements in Palestine, the latter of which i can safely say are pretty damn stupid. And anti-Islamic sentiment...and stupid things done by ultra-orthodox communities...

Therefore:

Although to be faire "acts like dicks" is much shorter than listing all the human right abuse, mass massacre and stuff they did aver the last few decades.
Enlighten me! Too lazy to read through the whole site :P

I'll try to end this derail by posting all I really have to say about the subject.  If you want to continue discussion, make another thread, but this is my end of things:

In 1967 or sometime abouts Israel decided to bomb all of Egypts airfields, etc, then rolled in with (American Made) tanks and stuff 'just in case' Egypt was planning an attack.  In 1981, Israel launched an airstrike on Iraq, destroying a nuclear reactor they were building, 'just in case'.  These are known as The Six Day War and Operation Opera, respectively, and they're two of the major ones.  Israel attacks their neighbors, funded by America and armed with American weapons, and makes itself out to be the victim.  Again, if you were living in an apartment complex and you saw one of your neighbors, Israel, break into the homes of your neighbor Egypt and Iraq, attack them, and steal their possessions, would you not begin to feel a little terrified? Would you not want to sleep with a weapon by your door?  Especially when the landlord, America, someone who claims to want peace and quiet within the complex, gives Israel guns and free rent?  It's a stupid analogy, really, but it pretty much describes what is going on, I think.

Again, the site I linked earlier shows the current 'score' with regards to Israel occupying the territories of those around it, bulldozing entire communities, etc.  Israel's actions are unjustifiable.

It's not even his guitarmanship, it's that he cherry picks his statistics in ways that don't actually follow logically.  For someone who claims to be vested in objective truth, he sort of does a weird juggler's act of finding any sort of statistic that almost seem to support his view until you scrutinize it-- even when there's heaps of evidence to the contrary.  Even then, he goes the extra mile to assert that any source he disagrees with is obviously biased and malicious.  It's a very blatant sort of circular reasoning.

Consider how he conflates "Women tend to avoid more dangerous jobs like mining and military stuff" (where they would be discriminated against due to the very real fact that many females are not as strong as males, or also the fact that women in the military tend to get raped and called crazy for speaking out against it.) with the more relatable and realistic examples of wage gaps existing at the same position within the same company.

Even then, if it comes down to "well for some reason women just choose to not get educated and they gleefully take jobs where they deserve to be treated and paid worse", you basically have to realize that unless you take into account the culture that promotes that sort of behavior, you've got nothing to fall back on outside of admitting you think women are strictly inferior to men.

Pre-emptive edit:  Kilroy if you're going to respond I'd appreciate it if you did so in your own words and not just linking a video or article for me to read that 'explains it all'.

I don't see this thread going anywhere useful, considering Kilroy has straight up asserted that he either doesn't believe institutionalized privilege exists, or just doesn't feel it's something anyone needs to acknowledge as existing.

I also feel that it's sort of telling how completely non-sequitur their anecdote of "i knew a black kid who did good in school AND a black kid who did bad!" is.

Edit:  Hahahaha look at how terrible of a person this dude is.   Hahaha at least watch for a minute.  It's good to know that the wily female gold digger is no threat to men who keep their wits about them!!
