The way DF handles items makes stacking complex.   It'll happen eventually, of course.  Imagine how DF handles coins; each made of different metals, by different civs, and even places within the civ, in different years.  It makes abstracting a pile pretty tricky.

It will, when Toady figures out how to make fortresses abstractify and run on their own without player control.

Honestly, I think rewalling should require nothing more than a stone and a dwarf to build it.  If a 3x3 workshop can be made from a single stone, surely a 1x1 wall can be.

Reinforcements should take a metal bar and a rock.   Nothing too complicated; bear in mind you'll probably have to rewall huge areas.

I'm sure once skills are consolidated, things will be more useful all around.  Having a legendary furnace operator is useful though; pumps out materials like mad.

What?  Back up your position rather than "I don't like this it is stupid."

I say it will be awesome because it would
A: Get rid of surplus goodies
B: Probably allow for you to get favors in return, and
C: Make sense that your frontierly dwarves would need to export some riches back to the Empire.

This is wrong; granite has historically been used in both architecture and decoration of such; with idols and frescoes and whatnot being carved in and about all manner of constructions.
