"My parents were real big on making sure I appreciated 'society' music. Jazzstep, Smooth Trip-Hop, that kinda stuff." His face colors a little before continuing. "I also have more than a bit of a taste for old pop, like real old. 1990s stuff. The local archives has a curated collection of the stuff, some of its pretty good."

Alex grimaces and tries his very best to not look too flustered. "It was supposed to be a compl...Ah well, I apologize if I caused any offence." He sighs and goes back to fiddling with his cane, watching the audience fill up with other students with some interest.

The topic of on conversation switching to music does gain his interest though.
"I'm rather decent at the piano, all those lessons I was forced to go as a small child did eventually pay off. Music has been linked to magical development in some ways, but honestly I just prefer it as a way to relax a little."

Alex winces a little. Oof, that line had not gone over as well as he had hoped. Come on, lilies were nice funeral flowers! Whatever. He gave her a empathizing, sad smile. "I can understand how the little annoyances of life would be dearly missed afterwards. Gosh, you're almost making me feel bad about complaning about the heat. Something poetic in it, though I can't claim to be a poet, I can see why your people caught the imagination of writers and artists long before they walked this earth. I'm rambling again, I'm sorry."

He gives Dom an apologetic look. "Sorry if I went off there for a bit, occupational hazard. Alexander Rand by the way, hope to be spending more time with you in the future." He gives Dom a winning smile and turns back to Scarlet, swatting away a mosquito as he does.

He lets out a sharp laugh and waves at the buzzing gnats and mosquitoes in the air. "We make a fine trio, don't we? The lawyer, the vampire and the mosquito. All bloodsuckers, according to some, though I believe I'm the weak point of the triangle there if we're being literal. Interesting that you still feel the heat though. I would've thought the natural chill of death's touch would cancel most of that out. Not surprised about the bugs not being interested though. Not much there for them to eat. Not that the wilting lily of undeath does your countenance any harm, mind you. Quite the opposite."

Finally to Albert he offers a pat on the shoulder.
"You also speak well my friend. If you use your tongue as a sword against the rigors of college life, I'm sure you'll cut a blood swathe. Mine may be tempered and practical, but I have no illusions I debate in a consistent and traditional style. Those that might avoid the straight swing will without fail be hit by the lazy, curving blow."

Alex simply shrugs. "I don't suggest giving away your trust too easily. Trust is a currency and a tool to be hoarded and used only when needed. You have to give a little away all the time, of course. We're trusting the school to both give us a good education and not kill us right now. But we have evidence and proof to back up that trust. Our decisions were informed by the best information we had on hand. The stifling of our desires, well, it depends on the desire. Before trusting them not to kill your dreams, perhaps you should gather information. Once you know the outcome, then you can make your decision. I'm fairly sure they're not going to destroy my path to the Bar, otherwise why accept me, but you have different ambitions than me. Ambitions that the school may not enjoy."

Alex gives Scarlet another smile, this one less pained. All the talking helped him ignore the itching in his leg. "Its fine, honestly. Just a minor annoyance. It was a bit much at first but I acclimatized. Which is more than I can say for this damn heat."

Alex cracks his knuckles as he turns to face Albert, happy for an excuse to not think about his leg or vampires or anything along those lines?

"Bringing up Freud in your first paragraph? I do believe the good doctor was dropped off by science long ago, though I suppose some of the concepts hes speaking of do have some resonance today. And I'd like to dispute your claim that Psychology and Law are opposed. Without understanding of the human psyche Law would be useless. If the goal of a legal code is to curb crime and create stability, creating laws that don't take into account how the brain functions is worse than useless. It would mean ignoring the motive, the Heart, if a crime. I will refute and dismiss any one who says that all crimes do not have a Heart. As for vampires, well, what you're talking about could be also be said about eating for us. If we do not feed we either explode into violence to get our food or die. Our desires and wants may yell at us to eat and gorge ourselves, to steal from others until we're full of food, the Super Ego works against that. Just as there are laws saying you cannot steal, and ration laws put into place during war or famine, thus there are laws governing the meals of vampires.

Another example would be recreational drugs. While yes, if one were too indulge fully on substances such as pot or alcohol they would descend into depravity and die, the law recognizes that most do not and puts limits down to discourage that over excess. While drug use can lead to addiction we are not banned from them entirely.
You can I can drink and smoke, but there are limits placed there. In this way we are prevented from both being forced to completely suppress our desires while being limited in the ways we can totally indulge without consequences. Vampiric feeding is the same. Scarlet and her kin are allowed to feed when they need too, but there are laws and limits that make sure they do not rip open passers by,
not that I think you would do such a thing. In this way the Super Ego and the Id are satisfied, at least a little.

Alex's smile turns into a grimace and he waves her concerns away idly. "Its no big deal, honestly. Old scars on my legs that I got at a young age act up when I'm near the living deceased. Part of the treatment they used or something. Its not a real problem, I've learned how to ignore it for the most part. You shouldn't worry, honest."

Alex shrugs at Albert, focusing on the conversation instead of his damn leg. "Maybe? I'm sure there'll be plenty of time in some of the orientation classes for that. Just be warned, I've negotiated with devils and Fae before. I'm not saying I'm the best orator around, but it wouldn't be fair to let you go in with low expectations of me."

He then turns to Scarlet, using the movement to cover his hand going to clamp down on his leg. The living wood burned and itched like fire, being this close to two vampires. He can hide most of his strained expression, but a sharp eyed viewer can probably tell his teeth are slightly clenched.
"Thanks for sparing me the jokes, you don't know how often I get them. Some could even be considered threats of assault, though I'm not anal enough to actually go after someone for that.
Unless they were being a huge ass. Anyways,
" He coughs and rolls his shoulders, "I'd be perfectly happy to give you my legal expertise, though I must inform you that I've not taken the bar and am honestly only scratching the surface of the law. But, so long as you give me time to prepare," and get an aspirin, he thinks, "I don't see why not."

"If I am interject," Alex says as he chimes into the conversation, "several studies have shown that while the desire too 'explode' is indeed natural to those afflicted with vamprisim, they also have a competing, human desire not to do that and to make stable bonds with others, though those never last long due to their duel nature. This is why the United States does not classify frenzy driven vampire attacks as 'legally insane' unless they were enforced under duress, and why vampires are considered full persons of most states and not under the jurisdiction of a parent or guardian." Alex gives Albert and Scarlet a disarming smile. "Sorry for the rant, Law Student, its kind of my thing. Alexander Rand, pleased to meet you."

Alex notes the clear hesitation on the girls part, but shrugs it off as first day anxiety and/or social awkwardness. Both of those were perfectly fair, if he hadn't grown up in a large, society family that held shit loads of parties he might not be so easy with meeting new people either. Instead he gives Bernie his best, most winning smile and shakes her hand. "Good to me you! I understand the anxiety, when I first went to high school I dealt with the same thing. Course be one of the few kids in a wheelchair might have heightened that, but I got over that particular disability. You decide on a major yet, or are you still undecided. Not to put too much pressure on you first thing! Feel free not to answer if you don't want to."

Alex sweated like a pig in the Southern heat.

Well, to be fair, he sweated in pretty much any heat at all. The raw life energy of the World Tree may pulse through his body, but little can strip away the natural inclination to cold that Maine breeds in its kin. As muggy as the summers could get, they were never as bad as this bug infested hell hole. At least, he thought this damn itching takes my mind off the mosquitoes and heat. He rather regretted his decision to sit near the center, as he found himself two empty rows behind one of the ladies with the parasols, the one with the choker to be exact. Normally this would not be a problem, but it seemed that the bits of living wood in his scars had decided that the young woman was going to be an Issue. The writhed and vibrated in his skin, just like they had when Uncle Albertus had brought in that Egyptian Mummy who claimed to be one of the original Hermetics.

Alex idly rubbed the tip of his staff, top worn smooth from countless bouts of fidgeting, and considered his options. The undead ladies were interesting, though he may need a bit more acclimatization time before he was ready to speak to them. The rather boisterous young man also had an air of importance about him, though both the hairs on the back of his neck raising and the man's conversation with the parasol duo cut off that line of approach. That left...Ah! The young blond haired woman a few chairs down from him! Alex scoots as quickly and subtly as his walking situation will allow and smiles at her.
"Ah, hello. Also a bit recalcitrant to speak to those around us? I understand, sometimes I get a bit tongue shy myself. I assume you're also an incoming freshman? Before I forget myself,
 Alexander Rand."
He smiles and holds out a hand for her to shake.

>Hasten efforts to find the NCR check-in officer

134
|Name|: Brend's Mill
|Faction type|:Township

|Identity|: Most clothing is made for hard work in labor, either in the ore mills or out in the fields surrounding the town. Mill workers often wear heavy protective gear and any ceramics/hard to heat metals they can get their hands on. Fieldworkers prefer simpler, more 'western' clothing. Town militia and guard are split between the two, with a mix of heavier protective equipment and lighter leather and metal armor.

|Ideals|: Primarily a town of metal workers and farmers, Brend's Mill doesn't especially ascribe to any one set of ideals. As former NCR citizens most of the Millers value democracy and civil rights, taking pride in being able to vote for their mayors and bosses in the ore mills. They also in general value hard work and a good day's pay, their outlook perhaps a bit more rugged and industrial than the average NCR citizen in the Hub.

|History|: Brend's Mill was established by the eponymous Brend about 4 years ago, during the initial NCR push into the region. While initially established under the aegis of the NCR's colonizing project, problems with tribals and raiders quickly made the settlement functionally independent. Brend's Mill was established to take advantage of an old Pre-War ore processing plant in the area. The town grew up around the plant and would take ore in from outside sources, processing it into useable metal before taking and cut and sending the rest out for a good amount of caps. The town is split into an industrial heart of old brick and mortar buildings around the mill and a surrounding sea of wodden homesteads and farms. The town's militia patrols the out skirts and skirmishes with various raider groups and, more recently, Legion scouting parties.

|Alignment & Disposition|: Being a independent town, Brend's Mill doesn't have much of an 'alignment.' The townspeople's love of democracy and honest work for honest pay has made the town lean a bit more towards the good side of the neutral scale, though they do process ore and scrap given to them by less savory factions. The NCR still technically controls the town and occasionally sends a representative to check in, and in return Brend's Mill has made noises about rejoining the Republic in full if the NCR can stabilize the Mojave. Because of this Brend's Mill is a target for raiders, Legion and slavers; and support for those factions is low among the populace.
