The day started to fade as the dwarfs decided on the lay out of there new base, It took them a while many arguements broke forth between Adwarf, Derm, And Arthur But finally the lay out made and designated. The task of who would mine this all was next...

"But you can't mean me!" yelled Adwarf as he stared at Derm and Arthur they had pushed for him to mine out the fortress alone "Look at it this way old chap, You're a gloom dwarf, All jare 'gud at is being alone!" Said Arthur. "You bitch!, Im no Miner!" Yelled Adwarf in response. "Well your not much of use in anything else...." said Derm with a snide tinge in her voice "You can get off your lazy arse and do some work!." Arthur broke out laughing at that, Adwarfs face became red "You will both pay!, I swear by the power of Kerlig I will make you pay!" Steping in between the quickly escalating situation Catten moved beside Adwarf and wispered into his ear "You get to mine out their rooms... You can leave the floor jagged and let them feel uncomfortable.. Perhaps they will even trip and fall.... And die..." Adwarf looked to her, His perception changed... "Good idea...." He said. He then walked over to the wagon, grabbing the only pick and headed down the mountain to begin his long tedious task.

Eli watched the whole exchange, His logical mind already working out ways to use this to his benifit... For now though he would wait and bide his time to carefully study how this situation is to play out and finally when it gets to the point where he can make a move he will, He desires the power of nobility... The power of rulership... To be the true expdition leader... The other dwarf wasn't worthy... Perhaps after the fortress started he would install a few traps in mistems room... And perhaps a lever in his... Yes... His plan was beginning to form....

(Note: Sorry about the horrible british accent... Im not exactly sure how one would go about doing that.... I tryed to do it a tad diffrent but im not sure if it worked out so well)

Well going through it and the lact of ammount of serch option avalibile I think we should be able to add certain things. (Don't know if a thread about this was made already)

Volcanic Activity Yes-no-N/a
Matriel Wanted (Allows you to go into a list and pick speicfic matriels, Marble, Slate... Basically things you want)
Abilty to assign Priority in serach (For example one time I was looking for a place and didn't meet all the requirements it took has flux zone over doesn't have an aquafir, And frankly I wish it was the other way around)
Abilty to switch between all places found (Take for example you don't like a certain area beacuse of no trees ect.)
Biomes wanted (Mountain, Plains, Trees, Ect.)
How many biomes do you want (Personally I like many)

Any others im missing?, I don't know but what I would really like is a priority setting.

My idea of dwarf magic involve runes and rituals (along with the artifact magic, of course).
The runes would be applied to armor and weapons in a similar way to gem setting (maybe the option to select a specific weapon?)
Each ritual would need some one to cast it, some sort of sacrifice or reagent, and a target.
A low key example would be, lets say, a ritual to buff a certain squad's toughness. The wizard (or whatever he ends up being called. I quite like 'runesmith') would need some kind of rock block (the reagent) and the squad would have to be near by (the target).  At the end of the ritual, the squads toughness would go up x amount.
On the other hand, a ritual to roast a goblin squad would require a massive amount of coal and cause an explosion over the target area, creating !!goblins!!.
What I would hate to see is magic becoming mundane. The higher rituals should only be used once or twice a siege, but the reason not to should not be something completely arbitrary. Maybe if you bend reality too much, it just breaks ;D. It would also take away from the feel of it all if everyone in the army was running around in impenetrable armor and flaming swords, so maybe runes can only be put one master work quality things? I'm not sure about that one.

Personally I think the rune idea is great, Perhaps rune traps how ever I think runes on weapons and armour should be mundane and useable for any quiality for example one just increases density a bit ect.... While artificats should be heavily enchanted when made, Those are the fire swords and Guantlit that boosts a dwarfs strength five skills....

I have noticed several areas of concern, and am now inserting my opinion into them in the hope that it makes a difference.

-If you want magic to be rare, make it so that no character can start out with stat points in magic. That way, everyone has to start from scratch.

-If you want magic to be hard to use, make it so that characters run out of physical strength as they use magic.

-If you want magic to be unpredictable, make it so that spells don't always work out well, especially at a low level. For example, the classic 'fireball' could be mis-cast and explode 2 tiles after launched.

-If you want to limit the different races as far as magic, just make it impossible for some races to use different types of magic. For example, elves could use magic that affects the environment, like growing trees rapidly, but they cannot create flaming swords or returning arrows like dwarves could. This is the path that makes the most sense in my opinion. Because think about this: If dwarves can't use magic, no one would want to play Dwarf Fortress. Everyone would want to play Elf Treehouse!

There you go. I hope the magic system turns out to be lots of fun.

No, I thoguht the dwarfs version of magic dealt more with artifacts and enchantsments on armour and such, I think there power more comes from artifacts, A dwarf may say "'ere let those pansy elfs use ter magic, Ill slice what 'ere they throw at me with my flameing sword Alkuza The Burningash!

The seven stared acroos the lands, They had arrived at there destination. The expidition leader Mistem Aronul stared across the planes and quickly begain to scetch a map of it.

Adwarf stared at Derm, Curseing her... He wished he could get rid of her and her friend Arthur, They had both been complete asses to him this entire journy, Mocking him, Calling him various vulgar words, Condemming him to his fate as a gloom dwarf, A god forsaken, His ansectors had made a particular god angrey and his family had been cursed to the fate of the glooms... He felt a hand reassureingly placed on his shoulder he turned to face Catten, His one and only friend she had been with him before the trip, Through childhood, They had grown up together as the other dwarfs teased him for his heritigae she had stood by him, Quickly makeing enemys of Derm. Of course she held no grudge againsit arthur.
Adwarf smiled at her as they stood by watching Mistem draw her map.

Looking around Derm spotted arthur, Gestureing to her, Arthur slied over "What ye want?" Derm looked her over and said "Well, Considering you and I are the only dwarfs here with millitary experince, We should form together and start a group..." Arthur stared blankly at derm not quiet comprehending, Then in a sudden moment she snapped her fingers causeing a small spark "Oh ye mean a millitary group' 'o ye?" Derm Stared at her for a moment wondering why she decided to copy exactly what she said.... "Yes.... Thats erm my intentions..." stammered Derm "Ah ye should'o e'id so!, I 'no e'actly what to be calling ourselfs!, The Creative Zeniths!" Derm Stared at her awhail considering if she was serious "Thats a horrible name" Derm Stated. Arthurs face darkened and she said, Her voice suddenly going deadly clear and loseing all traces of her accent "It will be the Creative Zeniths or I swear by the gods that have blessed your family that I will turn your corpse into a pile of ash" Derms face went white as she stared at the unblinking features on Arthurs face into the dark eyes.... "Y-yes thats quite alright.... What ever you wish..." she manged to spurt out... Arthur went off on her own after that happly skipping along.

Slightly apart from the other dwarfs eli stared at the sorrounding area, His highly creative and intellgent brain already thinknig of traps, Seige weaponary and defences that could be added to the landscape, He wasn't specifically A loner yet his heart filled with joy as he stared across the land with a feeling he knew all to well, Potential. This place was filled to the brim with it he was overcome with the feeling, He sat down for a moment and then begain to think where would they start....

You see the thing I don't like about Tolkens (spelling?) Is that it were more along the lines of Battle-Mages, While I do want spells swords as a possiblility I want the abilty to play a pure mage, Without haveing to fight with a sword to get to that point.

I also want the game to have diffrent forms of magic that are changed on predictiabilty and What exactly it can do, And how wild it is.

Yet I want some sense, Where its possible ot -beacome- A powerful mage by being a mage the whole way up. Yet I don't want anything to really be set in stone, I want soem magic to be predictiable low level thing, But to devel ounto higher magic you have to immerse yourself and hope to god your lucky and strong enough to survive. Say you wanted to play with a form of magic that had a tendinciy of fire, Now trying to devlop more skills on that would require you reading tomes and such... Im not sure how it would.... Magic Should be powerful, It should be Unprediticable, Or else does it truely deserve the name of "Magic.",v Of course I agree with your arguement they shouldn't have the power to say "Fireball" And wipe out an entire siege.

Personally I truelly despise the magic energy idea, But agree there should be diffrent planes of existince.

Also Another form that I could live with was the makeing deals with with demons and such for your powers, I like this its balnces out and while its mroe or less a normal adventurer gaining magic abiltys at a cost It evens out and makes you actually have to pay for power.

While this branch of magic im not quiet sure about I think that no matter what circumstances -NO DWARFS SHOULD BE MAGES-, Theres is a race of enginering and industry any magic there familr with and trust is that of artifacts, I would like artifacts and perhaps some random things to beacome magic without the player knowing, Yet in a noticiable way they can discern what is magic and what it does. Suddenyl you notice dwarf skeletons riseing from your crypt, You wonder "What the hell caused that", As toady mentioned dwarf magic may work.
