DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Thanks to the array of traps surrounding the entrance to my fortress, the walls of the small shed which gives way to the downward staircase into the fort are slowly becoming covered in blood. Dwarfy!

It's just macaque blood at the moment, but attackers won't be ale to tell that from a distance. Especially while a giant corkscrew is rearranging their internal organs.

I-I mus-st c-confess...  :(

In all that ~5 months of playing... Tons of fortresses cluttering the worlds... A-And I never found magma.
I fear digging deep.
I fear finding whats there.
I-I fear... THE DEEP!

In all t-that time of playing... I only reached a cave only one time... and then some minutes later, I abandoned that fort...

I'M DEEPNOFOBIC! I FEAR DIGGING DEEP!

If you want to find out what's down there, you can always start a fortress and immediately begin digging down. As long as your fort is young and tiny, you don't have anything to lose.

Besides, finding the magma sea doesn't necassarily mean unleashing the HFS. Just make sure you don't mine any adamantine.

Just realized something unbelievable. My fortress has lasted long enough to become a barony... with not a single dead Dwarf as of yet!  :o

The worst injury in the fort's history was when there was a small mining accident which caused nothing more than a bruised lower body.

This is amazing.

On the other hand, silver warhammers are about equal to addy axes (when used by armored humanoids)

Thanks for the tip. It'd be handy if the Magmawiki had a chart of weapon effectiveness based on materials. Though I suppose it wouldn't be as Fun.

In other news, some !!SCIENCE!!: even being at the bottom of a lake of solid ice won't kill a creature in a cage. This is probably well known, but I was curious.

I just had a metalsmith create an artifact silver short sword.

That's right: an artifact weapon that's actually useful. It's probably a bug.

Actually, silver doesn't hold a blade that well.
SHH HE DOESN'T KNOW THAT YET!

Well, if the dwarves slap with the flat of the blade it'll be alright, or if the fortress lasts long enough for DF to include silver weakness to werewolves/vampires/etc.

Well, crap. I've used silver short swords for quite some time. Like, since I began playing Dwarf Fortress.

I've gotten kills with them before though, so their not quite "adamantine warhammer" useless.

Turns out he wanted leather too, he just didn't request it.

Probably assumed it was self-evident that he'd need leather. Arrogant little shit.

This is unusual. A leatherworker gets a strange mood, claims the Leather Works, and demands not leather, but rock and metal bars. We have both these in abundance and I'd be happy to use burrows to give them all to him just to see what he makes, but he won't touch them. There are no burrows blocking him, or any other thing blocking his path. The supplies he needs are in the very room he's in.

What am I missing?

Leave it to an elf to have a last name that contains the word "combat", but is still hilariously gay.

Nemo Tulipcombat.

I like to imagine him prancing about smacking dwarves in the face with a flower- before my ranger promptly put a crossbow bolt through his face.

I just, I kid you not, had a forgotten beast pull off a Big Damn Heroes moment. I was beseiged by goblins, my military was dead, my anti-goblin river-diverter was incomplete, and due to construction on the diverter, the waterfall in the meeting hall was dry. As morale dropped and the tantrum spiral started, I acted out of desperation and created a couple squads of civilains who were going to try and take on crossbowman and pikeman with their fists. Just as they charged out the door, a giant spider made of grime and filth showed up, wandered out of the caverns, and attacked the goblins! even managed to kill a couple before going down. I was later able to break the seige, and I don't doubt it was thanks to the valiant efforts of that hideous monster.

One I clean the piles of corpses out of the halls and possibly get this fortress back on it's feet, I'm building a monument to that thing.

I have just successfully completed my first ever indoor waterfall, flowing right through the meeting hall. That'll keep the little bastards in a good mood. Incidentally, thanks to a slight accident in it's construction, I already know it's able to prevent tantrum spirals due to dwarf deaths.

I do feel bad about that. He'll get a proper burial once I figure out how to fish him out of river.

All my nobles died (along with everyone but a single child, who luckily lived until a migrant wave) and now nothing appears on the nobles screen. There is no list, and I can't create a militia commander. How do I get the list back?

EDIT: The problem seems to be that I have no expedition leader. How do I get one of the migrants to accept the responsibility?

I have a crippling obsession with cavern exploration. If the first level of caverns contained 50 troglodytes that killed half my fortress, I'd order the survivors to dig down to the next level. Many forts have died this way.

So, a forgotten beast slaughtered half the fortress. Unbelievably, I managed to get every singe dwarf inside and lock the door, with the forgotten beast outside (I will somebody remember that forgotten beasts can break down doors, but that's a story for another day). So the forgotten beast wanders about the feilds full of corpses and, unbelievably, decides to kick back and hang around the underground graveyard. Inspiration strikes and I designate the construction of a floor over the entrance, hopefully sealing the beast in. I delete the burrow over the fortress, unlock the doors, and let my mason go to work. Amongst the flood of dwarves running out with him... to carry the corpses to the graves... that the forgotten beast was standing on top of.

Yeah, my fortress died.

Diamondtruss has fallen. The once modest, but promising fort has been all but wiped out in a matter of minutes. A forgotten beast - a massive mite who's deadly dust numbed the body and blinded the eyes- took out the entire military, and well over half the population. The few who survived went insane one by one, and finished each other off. Now a single dwarf survives- a dwarven child who just watched every single person he ever knew die. If he stays inside, bearing the stench of miasma from the corpses all around him, he may live. There's plenty of food and booze for him. If he wanders outside, he'll walk right into a massive pool of poisonous extract, likely suffocating. If migrants arrive in time, we may yet rebuild. If not, I'll never force another dwarf to set foot in this twisted, hideous place.

EDIT: Migrants arrived! yay!
