My glassmaker says that we don't have any sand-bearing items. I have a sand collection zone and several bags. What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Nevermind. I was telling him to make glass instead of collect sand.  ::)

A goblin seige took out half my population. The goblins themselves aren't a threat anymore, but they don't need to be. My dwarves are kindly saving the goblins some time by murdering each other for them. Berserkers are running about, nobody's doing any work, and a fort that used to be the home of 110 dwarves now has less than thirty people in it. That's if you don't count all the corpses everywhere, soon to be spewing miasma all over the place. There seems to be good news: Most of the dwarves are maimed or injured in some way, so the berserkers don't go down very hard. Best thing to do is sit back and wait for it all to blow over, then rebuild with the few survivors.

I'm have lots of Fun.

Dear Chief Medical Dwarf,
I hate to interrupt you while you're partying, but do you hear that vague sound of a half dozen dwarfs groaning in agony? Sounds like it's coming from the hospital, doesn't it? Think it has something to do with the Goblin ambushes a few weeks ago? or the giant, living ball of fire that came from underground, maybe?

Have fun at the party. No really, take your time. But if we end up with a hospital full of vegetables slowly dying of infection, I'm going to send you to take care of the Elk Bird infestation in the caverns. Alone. And you'll be naked.

Signed,
An Annoyed Overseer

"Lurak Pulpylarvae the Spurting Starvation of Tombs is a deity of The Lucky Hammers. Lurak most often take the form of a skeletal female dwarf and is associated with deformity, disease, blight, death, and suicide."

Wow. I'm sure that's good for morale around here. That both of the permenantly bed-ridden dwarves in my hospital are worshippers is troubling.

A new forgotten beast just arrived. an enormous scaly squirrel.  :P

I burst out laughing as soon as I read it. Now for the most embarressing fortress death ever.

my fortress is dieing :(
not to massive sieging
not to FB's or titans

...to cats (struggling to figure out how the trap systems work)
 /wrists

Burrow all your dwarves in a room with a non-pet-passable door, then flood the fortress with magma (or water, if you've got non-magmasafe valuables and the exits are cut off.)

I remembered how accurately fluid mechanics work in DF.

Now my hospital is flooding.

Fixed.

This actually was one of the rare times that a hospital flood was an accident on my part. My militia commander was, against all odds, recovering. My paralyzed, dying-from-infection Legendary Miner wasn't even in the hospital.

Crazy badass militia commander is dead  :(. She was killed by a forgotten beast, so I guess it's an honourable death. I also just bought everything the humans had, selling them only things left lying around the Depot after the Elves were murdered. The economic system works!

My crazy badass militia commander, after brutally killing 11 Troglodytes and a Cave Crocodile, earned herself a title. Dumed Relicenjoys is now Dumed Relicenjoys the Cage of Noses!

I may have discovered some correlation between a creature's actions and their subsequent namings. The only named Troglodyte of the bunch, who'd killed a gem setter fell to Dumed briefly after she cut his nose off with her axe!

Not sure what the cage is about, though.

Dear Urist McCook,
a bowl of beer with raccoon tallow floating in it does not constitute a stew. Save the booze for drinking, will you?

My militia commander hurt her right hand fighting a Gorlak. She is now weilding a bronze shield and a bronze battle axe in her left hand. I am eager to see if she is still effective like this.

The militia commander hacks The Gorlak in the head with her -bronze battle axe-, tearing apart the muscle and tearing apart the right kidney.

What in the what?

EDIT: According to the raws on the Magmawiki, Gorlaks keep all their organs in their head. Fascinating.

Dear Improvised Cook,
I'm not blaming this problem on the incompetance that comes with being a beginner, because I know you'll always have this problem. I'm not asking you to change, because I know you will ignore me as always. I'm just letting you know that if you hadn't been uselessly rendering fat instead of cooking like I asked you to, the work room wouldn't have filled with the stench of rotten Camel parts. Also, we would have food to eat and wouldn't starve to death.

If this issue eventually leads to malnutrition, I'm going to lock you in a hole so that we don't waste precious food supplies on you.

Signed,
Samuel
