Eye of the beholder, I guess.

I recently lost 8 dwarves to thirst. It was the middle of winter and the lakes were frozen. I couldn't make any booze because all of the barrels were filled with food.

Every time I made one the idiots would immediately grab it and fill it with food.

For future reference: create a separate stockpile just for booze, and set the level of "barrels permitted" in the other food stockpiles to zero.

Everytime I try to customize stockpiles, the dwarves won't put anything into them.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: November 14, 2010, 02:12:26 pm »
My first fortress in .17, and it appears to be The Fortress That Armok Hates. I've had goblin seigies, endless kobold thieves, idiot dwarves using all the barrels for food rather than booze and dying of thirst during the winter. To save the fortress, we dug down to the caverns for water, which opened the doors for all sorts of icky subterranian creatures to come up and wreck shit. A Troll made a name for himself (literally) by kicking the shit out of my dwarves (figuratively), until I managed to lock him in my dining hall and he got kicked to death by a horse (inexplicably). I have about a dozen dwarves in hospital due to the goblin seiges, some with superficial wounds, some with permenant damage, and the only doctor's prior medical experience is as a Competant Diagnostician. I used all my iron bars for a quantum artifact made by a weaponsmith, but it only ended up being a seratted disc. I also got a pine mug. Attempts to draw a Giant Cave Spider to the surface into my cage traps got both my miners (themselves replacements for previous dead miners) webbed and killed. A tantruming miner murdered one of the bedridden military dwarves. A tantrum spiral might be beginning.  Nobody has any skill in their field of work because the original dwarves doing those jobs are all dead and sealed underground because I'm not sure what happens if I bury them improperly.

And I am loving every moment.

Again, may have been mentioned in the thread before, but due to the need to bury dwarves, the graveyard stockpile is now called "corpses".

A Goblin ambush just arrived, minutes after a previous one. Most of my surviving military is in hospital, so I decided I'd just have to lock the doors and wait it out, sacrificing the lives of the dwarves still outside, if need be. I managed to lock one, but, to my sheer amazement, A dwarf then opened the other and just... stood there. He wanted to see the goblins apparently, and he got his wish. Now the door is jammed with his corpse and the goblins are flooding in.  ::)

I have a meeting hall with tables and chairs. I want to make it at a dining room too. Do i have to select just one table and press 'dining room' and resize it to cover the whole room, or select every table and cover just the table and the chair near it or select every table and cover the whole room?
First thing you want to do is remove the "meeting hall" zone. Dining rooms act as meeting halls themseves, and it is easier to turn it off if you need to that way. Second, a room includes all furntiure within it's boundary. Rooms that overlap are considered "shared" and have their value halved. Thus you should do ONE table.

I believe you're mistaken. I happened to have a dining hall that was also a meeting area, and as soon as I removed the meeting area zone, any dwarf that wasn't eating left immediately.

If I make a bunch of bins, will my moronic dwarves store the food there, instead of all the barrels I need for booze?

Not sure if it's been mentioned in the thread yet, and I asl updated from 0/31/12 directly to 0.31.17, but elves are now depicted as a lowercase e.

Ah, okay, I just had to extract the files.

It's working now.

Why is this working?!

I've clicked the SDL Windows link and the mirrors, and I selected open and save for them all, and I keep getting "Incorrect Command Line"!

Is something wrong? should I bring 0.31.12 out of my Recycle Bin? delete it entirely?

I deleted 0.31.12 from my computer, and now I can't download 0.31.17 properly.

I'm not sure what the difference is between SDL and Legacy, but I clicked on the Windows link for each, and each time I saved the file, trying to open it gave me a pop-up that said there was an "Incorrect Command Line".

Little Help?

In a final update to the above, he and everybody in that fortress is now dead. The circus was in town.

Is it normal to get an Elf liason in Autumn? I've never had it happen before.

Maybe he got caught in a... zombie... elephant... storm?

He arrived with the Dwarven traders. My Get-Free-Stuff-From-Dead-Elves Machine isn't ready yet!
