DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: November 09, 2010, 07:33:59 pm »
Through a complicated series of events, I wound up with a paralyzed dwarf and an Elk Bird sealed away in what used to be a hospital. The intention was to give the Elk Bird the job of ending the paralyzed dwarf's suffering, then having my squad kill it, then have an Elk Bird feast in memory of the euthanised dwarf. What went wrong is that the Elk Bird inexplicably did not attack, even though I've seen them attack my dwarves before. So I let the Elk Bird out, hoping it would no the way out of the fortress. Have you ever seen a fly buzzing against a window, pathetically trying to escape? that's what's happening here. I would send my squad after it, but I had just sent them to kill the human traders. They managed to attack exactly one, and I don't recall his name, but I'm fairly certain it was Bruce Lee. Every single dwarf was incapacitated, but amazingly not killed. So their all laying in the dirt in the new hospital, there's an idiot Elk Bird running about scaring the shit out of everybody, the paralyzed dwarf is lying there stuck in a Harlan Ellison style nightmare, and the human traders are standing around, having killed the troll I'd unleashed on them effortlessly, waiting for me to make their fucking day.

So, all in all, a pretty average Tuesday.

The good news is the mayor was killed in all the uproar.

Only in dwarf fortress would the death of your mayor be considered an upside to the murderous rampage of a monster made of water...

How many z-levels does a rock have to fall to be instantly lethal to whoever it lands on?
Falling objects don't do any damage.  A cave-in will kill if it falls even a single Z-level, but those are trickier to set up.

Hmm, Project: Kavorkian Skylight might need some work.

Well, she's walled into the hospital. alone, in pain, and left to die of thirst. Not a nice way to die. I'm gonna build a new hospital, one complete with a system which will allow me to drop rocks from above onto each bed in case this ever happens again. How many z-levels does a rock have to fall to be instantly lethal to whoever it lands on?

Ah! A major has been appointed! Let's see... she's a legendary carpenter thanks to a strange mood! so she's useful around the fort... and she likes slade.  :o

Okay, no need to panic, she hasn't mandated anything yet.

...She also hates Cave Spiders, one of which I happen to have in my animal stockpile. At least I know what to do if she starts demanding anything physically impossible. :P

Dear Urist McStrangeMood,
You used quite a bit of rock on that artifact, eh? burrow exploits are a wonderful thing. Let's see what wonderful addition to our fortress you've-

...

A bitumonous coal ring.

...

Urist, there's a downward shaft in the caven that may or may not be home to an unimaginable eldritch horror or a bunch of pissed-off snakemen or Armok knows what else. Can you go check that out for me? Thanks.

Signed,
An Overseer who knew this would happen the moment you claimed the Craftsdwarf's shop.

Once again, an elaborate elf-killing machine has been thwarted by a camel keeping the floodgates from shutting properly. When The Troll was released from it's cage, it set upon the Elves as expected, but they escaped through the exit made by their stupid camels. Luckily, the Troll was recaptured by the row of traps outside, as planned, and I can fix the trap to have a little more room for livestock. Meanwhile, my military made short work of the Merchants, and my haulers leapt to work to take their stuff inside.

Sorry if this is common knowledge (but the search function here is a little too inclusive), BUT;

Mugging elves by tossing them a little way with a bridge and looting their spilled merchandise, when I notice a big red C

My clothier is beating an armourer around the head in the dining room, and then wanders away to carry on hauling.  I have far more use for an armourer than a clothes maker, but have no idea what happened.  Is it just unhappiness? Love triangle? Ever any warnings for this, or do I have to keep an eye on the happiness meter in DT?

Either a bit of tantruming, or your mayor mandated something to be made (probably armour of some sort) and when it wasn't completed, he chose that armourer as being at fault. Your clothier was dispensing justice the dwarven way.

Anyway, I got a dwarf in hospital who got on the bad side of an extremely pissed off Elk Bird. She's got sensory and motor nerve damage, she can't stand, and she's in extreme pain. What's the quickest most efficient way to put her out of her misery?

I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with a simple bone gauntlet. I'm not saying that an artifact being worth little over 1000 is inherently bad. I'm not saying that refusing to start your project until I've dug down into the second level of caverns- resulting in a pretty irritating Elk Bird problem- to get you silk cloth that you don't even end up using is wrong. But I am implying it. With no subtlety whatsoever.

A Dwarf in a strange mood probably came within inches of going crazy before I finally figured out that he needed more bones, which is why he wasn't collecting all the other stuff I made for him.

Also, The second level of the caverns are apparently home to things called Elk Birds, which I've never encountered before. They haven't killed anybody yet, but they're hostile. I'm considered cancelling all subterranean wood cutting until the Elk Birds have been lured to the surface and caught in my ring of cage traps, along with my caged troglodytes, giant Olms, the cave crocodile, and various other subterranean beasties that I can't figure out how to safely get into a pit to drop Elves into.

At least they're flightless. Otherwise it would've been more unpleasant than that.

Indeed. They're all caged, now, and I have also developed a method of at least getting the Caged Troll in the right place so that I can unleash him on the Elf Merchants. Getting him back in the cage may be a little harder. Merchants don't get caught by cage traps, right?

Urist (yes, his name actually was Urist this time) got a strange mood and demanded cloth, stone blocks, bone, and wood. I got him his stuff, wondering how they'd be used together.

I ended up with a mule bone gauntlet. Nothing special about it whatsoever, no images, no spikes, nothing.

What I want to know is what on earth happened to the wood, stone and cloth.

I read that bone artifacts are bugged, their decorations always disappear. :( I got one too.

Had this happen quite a lot. Just like now: a dorf got posessed and snagged my crafts workshop right when I was frantically making stuff to get seeds off the elves (they're nice to me again despite the horrible deforestation of the map) and demanded two units of bone and one of cloth. I had to butcher a donkey and a mule to get him what he wanted, and all I got was an undecorated bone bin worth less than some of the stuff made outside of moods. Probably the posessors took the rest of the stuff away.

Ah, it's not his fault, then? I guess somebody else will get the job of inspecting the dark, forboding downward passage to see if there are any eldritch horrors waiting to visit their wrath on any dwarf unfortunate enough to stumble upon it.

Is it normal to have downward slopes stuck in mid-air after a collapse? Is there a way to get rid of them?

How do I get the animal out of the cage without actually "building" the cage in a specific location?
