DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Worst injury to a dwarf-and survived?
« on: September 25, 2010, 06:26:53 pm »
A copy-paste about a human in adventure mode, but quite fitting to this thread:

Quote
I tore out a mans skull. Strangely, he survived. I went on my merry way, certain he wouldn't survive LOSING HIS SKULL.

He did. I found him some time later, with a "Massive round scar" on his head. And no skull.

NO SKULL.

Should have beat him to death with his own skull.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

"Zaneg Kolgireth has been ecstatic lately."

"She is rarely happy or enthusiastic."

?!

Not watering McBedridden is a service to the fortress.

He was bedridden due to having his torso torn open by a Troll that he helped save the fortress from.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: September 22, 2010, 06:54:50 am »
So, I just embarked once again, this time selecting an area with a goblin fortress, which I hoped would make my fortress interesting as I built my fortress while wiping out theirs. My wagon arrived inside the goblin fortress. Not in between a couple of buildings, inside one. On the third floor. As I started the game, there was what had to be the most awkward silence ever as the dwarves and goblins stared at each other, then I assigned all the dwarves to a squad and attacked. I managed to kill all the goblins on that floor, but all my dwarves ended up horribly injured.

My palm didn't leave my face till long after I abandoned.

Dear Idiots,

The water source is right. there. It's right down the hallway. You can't not see it.

Signed,
Your Overseer

Dear Urist McBedridden,

Ya, they're never gonna get that water for you. For what it's worth, I've made you a very nice gold sarcophagus.

Signed,
Your Overseer

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My failed attempt to make a boat
« on: September 20, 2010, 11:19:46 pm »
So after embarking right on the edge of the ocean, I set about the construction of what I hoped would be a boat capable of floating (I was gonna figure out a means of propulsion later, perhaps creative use of screw pumps).

Here's roughly it's shape:

000
0+0
0+0
0+0
000

I constructed it by building a bridge out over the water, which supported it until I would launch it by removing the support construction.

The ultimate result was what amounted to a wood stockpile at the bottom of the ocean with a dead dwarf in the middle. So that failed hideously. I think the problem was, due to the way the support structure was built, it had to drop down a z-level before hitting the water.

Is there actually a way to make a successfully floating boat?

You could trap it in a room using a constructed wall (you may need to leave a migrant in there to distract it while you build the wall. Then, through a bit of channel digging, collapse a section of floor directly above the room onto the FB.

Also, I think we should stop talking about all these gold ingots and recursive universes and focus on the real problem: Urist Imiknorris is an evil supercomputer.

Yes, but he is most likely just a simulation being run on a larger supercomputer which is being simulated by a larger supercomputer. which is simulated.

I like recursion. It's fun.

Dear Ushrir Asobdalzat,

I admire your resolve to do your job no matter what. I can also understand your refusal to admit you're injured, especially when said injury was caused by your own stupidity. But if you keep running away from the hospital to keep mining with both your legs still broken, I'm going to have to disable your mining duties for your own safety. It's also pretty rude to just walk away from the doctor who's dutifully in the middle of setting your bone.

Signed,
Your concerned and disturbed Overseer

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Awesome fights

I actually had a pretty brutal fight earlier that ended with, of all things, a Crowning Moment of Awesome for the goblin thief. I got a picture of the combat report but I'm not sure how to post it to the thread.

To: Dr. Vucar

The other dwarves have got the stone hauling handled. Your patient however, is currently lying in the dirt with a busted-up leg. Please try and sort out your priorities before you end up as the defendant in Dwarf Fortress's first ever medical malpractise suit.

Signed,
The voice of reason to which every one of you stupid bastards is deaf.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Funniest Names

One of my fortress's miners was named Aban Oarmasters.

Say the last name to yourself a couple times.

Dear Dwarves,

Holy mother of Armok, guys. I know you were hungry, but couldn't you have waited till the Donkey was cooked? rather than swarming the butcher's shop and devouring it's corpse like a school of piranha? Thanks for the nightmares.

-Your Ruler

Dear Urist McEngraver,
As I've discussed before on the forum, I quite enjoy your little pictures of that Marsh Titan, and welcome any new artwork of his battles. However, try to remember that, through my eyes, these engravings appear as the letter 'K'. Point being, would you stop putting three of them in a row all over the place?

-Your Ruler

PS if you'd brought your buddy the High Master Miner some food while he lay in the hospital with a broken leg, you wouldn't have to engrave all those images of him wasting away.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My Engraver is obsessed with a Marsh Titan?
« on: September 15, 2010, 01:09:03 pm »
Two points:

1) I hear that dwarves who hate tradition won't record history in their decorations. Try giving these dwarves the engraving/statue jobs and see what they make.

2) Instead of world gen'ing a history, end it at year 2 and make an adventurer. Go do some epics in the region you will be embarking. Then retire/kill him and start your fort in said region. Engrave the epics you got up to yourself.

In my "Year 3 embark" fort where I ended up engraving the entire (low-height) mountain I embarked near, a lot of them ended up being about masterwork creations of various sorts. I was making thousands of masterworks. It got boring for me, but I'm sure some adventurer would find it fascinating to see this mountain of a thousand masterworks.

Actually, I'm rather enjoying learning more about this Marsh Titan. With any luck, my engraver might some day engrave how he died.

Or the titan will come back to the swamps and kill everybody. That'd be fun, too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Horrifying/Disturbing moments in Dwarf Fortress
« on: September 13, 2010, 11:56:22 pm »
So I began building, mining, etc. in a vast underground cavern, which, unbeknownst to me, had a small serpent-man population. Once I noticed the attacks against my dwarves, I mobilized my squads, and the serpent-men were massacred. My dwarves were not without injuries, however, and they stumbled back to the hospital, returning to their brethren as heroes.

Not long after, a dwarf named Asmel Tosedrigoth started throwing a tantrum (which is odd because I'm not sure if he was even part of the squads). I did his best to find him before he hurt anybody, and I did. I got to watch him attacking a dwarf woman with a pick axe. A woman who was bringing water to the aforementioned bed-ridden war heroes. He hacked her up a bit, ripped her guts out, and then just left her there for dead.

I began devising elaborate ways to make Asmel suffer, but he went berserk first. The few of my soldiers who are able to report for duty will give him a better death then he deserves.

So, anybody else got a horrible/disturbing/sad story to share?
