A small hole in the caverns has killed at least a dozen dwarves, causing a tantrum spiral. All other threats are minimal, due to the danger room turning any threat the game can throw at me from notoriously relentless to laughably pathetic. I just killed an entire seige without a single military loss, not counting the baby carried into battle. Insanely, it was a team of crossbow goblins. You should have seen the amount of arrows the dwarves dodged. Apparently being jabbed with sticks for a couple minutes turns you into a master of Gun Kata.

My fortress may be destroyed by the small hole in the caverns. It's apparently inescapable, what with the water flowing into it, but I swear the dwarves are running straight at it and jumping in. At least my new chief medical dwarf has lots of patients to practice on.

So, the guy who killed the forgotten beast finally died.

The poison apparently worked in three stages: first a fever, then numbness, then getting randomly killed by a Draltha.

A forgotten beast called Spothrib the Lustful Gristle of Tentacles.

Wow. I've discovered the way to make Tentacle Rape even more disgusting, and it's the word "Gristle".

Then come full circle and release elves on the unicorn-riding monkey.

It appears the guy who killed the forgotten beast singlehandedly is going to die for it. The beast had poisonous gas, which I didn't worry about because it only gave him a fever at first, but now he's numb too, and spends his time mindlessly wandering the caverns.

While my danger-room-trained dwarves killed a giagantic cycloptic spider without taking a single blow, an untrained marsdwarf without any bolts performed an equally impressive feat: killing a forgotten beast singlehandedly. To be fair, it was a quadroped made of mud, but it counts.

The greatest threat to my fortress so far, going by number of fatalities, has been a small hole in the ground. Due to a ramp and some rushing water, dwarves continually get sucked down there.

However, I have discovered adamnatine in the third cavern layer. Based on some warm stone, the magma sea is just below. I'll dump some water around the adamantine so I can dig out as much as possible.

Got my first danger room set up, and holy shit why did I never use one of these before? It's like an instant super-soldier making machine.

Unbelievably, my fortress might survive. We had 3 survivors, locked in two different rooms. Two are resting injuries, the other is in prison. The walls and floors are coated with blood and filled with rotting bodies. The culprits are the two forgotten beasts who teamed up to rip my fortress a new asshole.

But migrants just arrived! And if I move swiftly, they might be able to seal off the fortress entrance, trapping the beasts inside! Then, I'll be able to dig out sections of the earth above the fortress, and crush the beasts to death in cave-ins!

Ya, this will work.

Argh, bugged siege. They are standing and doing nothing. (bug 4552)

I'm starting to think that's what they're supposed to do. Seige warfare is about keeping the enemy inside their fortress, deprived of outside supplies or assistance, until everybody starves, goes mad from the isolation, or makes a futile attempt at a counterattack. That's why the best anti-seige weapons can kill the goblins wherever they are on the map.

So, I figured an army of 10 unarmoured axedwarves could take down a forgotten beast. I'll never know if they could, but they definitely couldn't take on two at once. My fortress went from a population over 50 to a population of 4, literally in a couple minutes.

A minor miscalculation in my river dam construction lead to some flooding, and my mechanic drowned (note I'm talking about 1/7 floods, the mechanic panicked because his shoes got wet and jumped into the river itself). I can still fix this, though.

Why yes, I did set the number of beasts as high as possible during world gen, why do you ask?

Urist McBateman cancels Attend Meeting: Too Insane
So which setting controls the number of forgotten beasts?

During world gen, at the screen where you set world size, number of civilizations etc. there should be an option for maximum muber of beasts.

Crank that shit to 11.

So the spear-bridge worked spectacularly. There are now 11 dead goblins in the river. When the water freezes in winter, I'll dig out all their stuff.

As for the forgotten beasts, 2 got bored and left, apparently, or are hiding in one of the undiscovered regions and are about to come destroy me. Looks like the other one that just showed up will give them a hand.

Holy shit.
I have, no bullshit, 3 forgotten beasts in the caverns. 3 different monsters that could each probably wipe out my fortress individually. Luckily, I've sealed off the caverns, and hopefully, they'll have an epic showdown, after which I can kill the survivor. As I was building the floors to seal off the caverns, a seige showed up, ready to test out my spear-bridges of falling, watery death.

I don't know what's about to happen, but I do know it's going to be amazing.

Addendum: Oh shit, my mayor is down there with 'em.
