DF Suggestions / Re: Dwarven Imperialism

Why not make Kingdom Mode from the point of view of the King? You basically own the King, appoint nobles, give production orders/mandates in various fortresses (with an efficiency depending on the skill of the managers), send expeditions form the Mountainhomes to start new fortresses, control armies and control the diplomacy with other civs.

Sounds cool. Also, you could be able to assign a certain amount of booze and food to the inn. The quality of the inn and the created wealth would attract more travellers, while dangerous surroundings such as Forgotten Beasts, zombies and skeletal carp would reduce the amount of travellers, but increase the skill of the remaining ones. And at the inn screen you could have a list of all the adventurers present in the inn. You could ask them to tell stories, trade away your artifacts and food and booze for valuable gear, hire them to kill some FB or HFS, hire them to train your military or even imprison them and seize all their valuable equiment (but travellers would be less likely to come). You would need social skills to convince them to do stuff, maybe they would have moods just like merchants. And they could be fully integrated to your fortress if they are very pleased.

It would be some serious choice to make: on the one hand, when you open an inn, you get many helpful travellers - on the other hand, they will eat and drink all your supplies, they need to be given beds, they need to be taken care of if you don't want them to leave, and your fortress could very well starve to death and have tantrum spirals because everything good and edible is being used by the strangers.

I think it has been suggested. A sort of Kingdom mode, it's in the Eternal Suggestion poll, I voted for it. But anyway, Toady One is going to implement armies travelling through the whole world map. Personally, I find it neat. You could send expeditions to plunder elven forests and goblin towers, maybe even send caravans yourself to other sites.

But is the truce actually official or do humans/elves/goblins just send caravans or ambushes at random and you just have to wait and bet about what's coming next year?

But this only works with Humans, right? You can't make peace with Goblins or Elves, can you?

I once had a dark fortress named Incestslut. I thought it was quite the funny name back them.

Because it's not funny anymore now?

Yeah, and I've always wondered how the game generates names...

Ok, so a host is up at dwarfort.dyndns.org

If I understand well, I just need to run dfterm2 and anyone with PuTTY will be able to connect to me through my IP adress or dyndns name?

You know what this game needs?  A comprehensive manual and a guided tutorial and proper documentation

It already exists. There is a shitload of tutorials in the wiki, let alone all the video tutorials.

And three distinct difficulty levels
Not only difficulty levels already exist, but there are many more than three. If you consider all the embarking locations and features (Evil/Neutral/Good, Benign/Neutral/Savage, Aquifer, Volcano, Rock salt, etc.), there are many, many ways to play the game at different difficulties. Of course, this doesn't take modding the game or challenges into account.

and better graphics
Tilesets and 3D viewers.

Quote
and more mouse interface
I think some tilesets do that.

Quote
and better skill management
Manager program.

Quote
and a bug-free military
Older version.

Quote
and no more unkillable forgotten beasts
Mod the game.

Quote
and a better framerate
Disable features such as weather.

Quote
and wheelbarrows for the dwarves
I think bins, barrels and buckets do a pretty good job alone.

I don't see the point of the whole debate. Toady One and the whole community have been kind enough to provide us with plenty of easy ways to mod and use the game as we wish. If you find the game too hard, mod it. If you find it too easy, mod it. If you want more graphic support, get a tileset. If you don't like micromanagment, run a manager. If you want more help, go to the wiki or ask the forum. I've already done it and I have never been mocked or insulted, even though I'm quite new to the game.

Dwarf Fortress: Give birth in combat and use your baby as a shield.
Dwarf Fortress: Vomit in combat, use it as a weapon.
Dwarf Fortress: Go to an elf town, behead an elf woman and proceed to beat up everyone else with the woman's corpse.

Maybe we should make a list of available public servers, I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to host their games (well, me at least... :P)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Peace with the golbins?

The wiki says goblins are always hostile in vanilla DF, so I assume it's never possible to trade with them, right?

1. Yes.

What's the difference between WAR and ------?

When there are some -------- near Goblins on the embark screen, does it mean I'm at war with them? Will they send caravans? Is there any way to make peace with them?
