DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Splitting bolts?
« on: May 31, 2020, 08:23:21 am »
Can you no longer split a stack of bolts with marksdwarves, archery targets, and a channel dug in front of them? They don't appear to use the targets at all while the channel is there. And if that's the case is there any other method for splitting the stack to do the whole infinite metal thing?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Items in falling minecarts
« on: May 21, 2020, 04:57:47 pm »
To get materials down to my magma forges I channeled a big vertical shaft. Problem is, a portion of the way down, I had to shift the tunnel over 1 tile so I can't just drop the items directly down it. I thought that perhaps I could load up a minecart, drop it down, it'd bounce off a single track-ramp on the shifted portion and head down the rest of the shaft. It DOES do this, but all the items inside it fall out. Is this because items will naturally fall out of a falling minecart? Or is it because the minecart hits a track ramp? Would the items fall out the moment it hits the very bottom of the shaft regardless? And is there anyway to stop this from happening or am I gonna have to give up on the idea?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Need a little help with impulse ramps
« on: May 20, 2020, 08:24:47 pm »
So I made a successful impulse ramp. Sort of. I have a long, winding minecart track all the way down to my magma forges. I built impulse ramps to launch a minecart back up to the surface. And it works. Except I can't seem to get the last bit of it right.

https://ibb.co/qJhPR52

On the left is the last segment of my track. The three curved pieces are 3 track-ramps. That's what I've been using for the rest of my track and it's been working fine. On the right is the level where I want it to pop up and end. Except that no matter what combination of tracks/ramps/lengths I try the cart just keeps bouncing back down instead of rising up that last z-level. I tried impulse ramps and no impulse ramps, I tried adding walls, I tried carving out the top as you can see, and each time the cart just bounces back. What's the solution here?

DF Gameplay Questions / Soldiers and attachment
« on: April 19, 2013, 06:55:12 pm »
Since I took so long in getting steel, most of my soldiers have become attached to their old iron weapons. Is there a way I can "persuade" them into picking up their new steel stuff, either normally or through something like dfhack?

DF Gameplay Questions / Melting Stocks
« on: April 10, 2013, 06:30:30 pm »
Anyone else have the issue where you designate items for melting, but they remain on your stocks screen even after you smelters say there are no objects left to melt? I have a ton of weapons, armor, ect... with the little red M symbol by them, and yet my dwarfs are telling me I have no more meltable items, so I'm assuming they've all been smelted back down into ingots. But they're all still on the stocks list.

DF Gameplay Questions / Vampires vs Werewolves
« on: March 25, 2013, 12:15:48 am »
Do both kill sleeping dwarves, or is that the purview of vampires only? I've had three unsolved murders, so I know I've got a vampire loose in my fort, but I've also caught a werewolf as well. So I'm not sure if ridding myself of the wolf would solve my issues or not.

Well derp. I thought that thread was in this forum but it had disappeared. Apparently it's in the other one. -_-

DF Gameplay Questions / Stupid rock layers.
« on: March 24, 2013, 02:32:36 pm »
Don't you just hate it when you've got a nice big fortress up and running, all the industries going, everything is sailing along smoothly, and then you slowly realize you haven't seen a scrap of iron the entire time? Oh, you've been digging up a ton of copper and silver, but you gradually come to the realization that there may not be a single chunk of any other metal on the entire map. So you frantically dig downward, searching for a sedimentary or igneous extrusive layer, hoping and hoping to find hematite, magnetite, lignite, bituminous coal...anything that's better than chunky ol' copper. But no, you discover too late that for hundreds of Z-levels downward, all that you can find is galena and tetrahedrite. No iron. No gold. No platinum. Not even any tin to make bronze.

So much hate. I really need to learn to use dfhack to reveal and prospect the whole map before actually starting my fort. -_-

DF Modding / Masterwork Dwarf Fortress
« on: March 13, 2013, 11:11:08 pm »
Is there a in-depth guide for this mod somewhere? The manual that comes with it just doesn't do all that great a job at explaining things, especially the PLETHORA of new armor and weapons. One of my dwarfs just created an artifact Falcon Knight Arms. What the heck is that? What ammunition does it use? The manual explains nothing! :c Not to mention the massive list of foreign armors. How the heck am I supposed to create a uniform if I have no idea what Rigid Shellplate falls under? Is that plate armor? Leather armor? Hardened leather auuuuuuugh.

So, yeah, any guides for this thing? =/

DF Gameplay Questions / Bins, bins everywhere
« on: October 10, 2012, 09:27:12 am »
So, my fort is littered with bins that the dwarfs just don't seem to want to pick up and put in stockpiles. They're filled with assorted crap, from crafts to soap to pilfered clothing from sieges, sometimes all in the same bin. Even when I enable collecting refuse from outside, none go to pick them up. I have bins littering various parts of my fort inside, as well, and these too just sit where they are with no one coming to haul them around. Is there a particular reason? None are forbidden that I can tell. I have bins allowed. There's plenty of space. I even just made a catch-all-stockpile inside that accepts everything just to see if the mixed bins were the issue, and they still don't get moved. And I tried cleanowned with DFHack to see if a dwarf had claimed the things and just weren't moving them, and this was still a no go. I'm at a loss, really.

Also, a secondary question: I'm trying to use minecarts to setup a quantum stockpile of mastercrafted furniture. I have two stockpiles, one that takes from the stockpile full of furniture, but only the mastercrafted beds, doors, cabinets, ect., and one that the minecart just dumps it onto another stockpile that takes from links only. For whatever reason, the dwarves refuse to fill the first minecart with furniture even when there's clearly items there that meet the criteria. I don't know what the deal is.

DF Gameplay Questions / They cooked my tallow.
« on: January 23, 2012, 06:31:54 pm »
I butchered an endless amount of my giant kitten horde so I could get some tallow and make some stupid soap. But ohhhhhhhh no, the dorf cooks decided that it would make a delicious roast instead and cooked it all. What must I do to stop this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Stupid unlucky embarks.
« on: January 19, 2012, 10:05:51 pm »
I go to the trouble to find a site with no aquifer, flux stone, a river, shallow AND deep metals, soil, clay, trees, in a temperate yet savage environment. I start carving out a grand fortress from the mountainside, start setting up my farms, workshops, ect...

Then I decide to check DFHack and see what shallow and deep metals I actually -have-.

Tetrahedrite and nickel. That's it, not counting Adamantite. No iron, gold, platinum, not even any lignite or coal, Nothing.

:(

This happens to me ALL the time. I get a perfect embark site and the only metals it has is copper or something else equally as crappy.

DF Gameplay Questions / Desalinizing water
« on: January 14, 2012, 09:26:15 pm »
Picked an ocean embark. The water is salty. I know that putting a well over it will make it drinkable, but I was hoping to make a freshwater bath inside the fort. Using pumps as a filter does not seem to work. Any ideas as to what to do?

DF Gameplay Questions / Residential burrows?
« on: January 08, 2012, 08:22:17 pm »
Now, I've used burrows for a while, mainly of the "Red Alert" type where I just order all my civilians to GET TO THE CHOP...er, I mean, order all my civilians to stay indoors.

I was wondering how effective or efficient it would be to, instead of creating one or two large dormitory levels, split the quarters up so that the workers are closer to their respective industries? I realize that there would still be the whole 'noise' issue to deal with (If that's still in effect? I assume that a 4 floor buffer is still required between a workshop and living quarters in order to eliminate noise causing dwarves to become grouchy? How much does these really effect their mood?).

And, if I did split up residential districts, is it worth confining the dwarves to their specific work areas? I'd expect I'd still need a food/booze stockpile, water source, and dining areas for each burrow, so I'm just not sure if this would be more effective than simply having a single giant living complex somewhere in the middle of my fort.
