DF Gameplay Questions / No iron?

So, I'm beginning to wonder whether the site I have chosen has any iron whatsoever. I have tons of marble, malachite, schist, silver, various stones and such. I've dug down several layers, discovered a massive cavern, dug all around that, and am in the process of going even deeper without any iron in sight.
My question is two-fold: a) Is it possible to pick a site without any iron in it? and b) If not, then just how deep do I have to dig to finally get some?
