DF General Discussion / Re: Possessions, Fey moods and more

Is there any use for artifacts? Since the dwarves just carry them around, it would seem the only bonuses are the skill and attribute bonuses a dwarf receives when they complete the task.

What're the necessary parts to assemble a ballista? I have a copper arrow head, and the basic ballista parts from the siege workshop, but when I try to assemble a ballista from the build menu I am told I need more parts.

Any idea what they are and how I can make 'em?

That right there is an impressive accomplishment. The rest of us have just been killing dwarves, but you've accomplished a full-fledged Mutually Assured Destruction scenario. I salute you.</STRONG>

I actually implement a MAD plan into all of my forts, be it through unhibited panic flooding or levers hooked up to my supports if I used a very large number of extravagant chambers.

I figure it's the only way to be safe.

What was really interesting though was when my Sheriff went berserk, slaughtering seven dwarves before he was finally stopped because of his superior martial skills. How was he stopped? I had accidentally oriented my ballista backwards, and by chance it lined up perfectly with the single-tile entrance to the main hall, with my meeting room, where the well was, where the Sheriff was doing his slaughtering.

He was gibbed so badly that we managed to recover a head, a arm, and a hand in addition to the corpse.

I wasn't aware this is unintended, so I've been using it in every fort of mine so far-- I do also make interior farming chambers, though, so I'm not a total cheat!

For the outdoor river channeling, I just create an entraceway into the side of the mountain 2 tiles deep, put a floodgate in the interior tile, and put the end of the channel on the exterior tile.

Then I dig from north of that to create a room where I will be farming in, and separate it from the rest of my fort with two doors (because I believe in precautions!). Have a dwarf link a lever to the floodgate, flip it and flood the room (with the doors set to Forbidden), and then flip it again for the weather to recede. Repeat in the spring!

Also, it is true that the channel will take in an arbitrarily large amount of water. When I was done with my most recent fort of 54 dwarves, a very sizable fort stretching far beyond the far side of the underground river, I jammed both of my safety doors open and removed the rest from my fort.

Not only did every single room flood, but so did the entirety of the wilderness. Every living thing that was not on the very tip of the map drowned.

EDIT: Actually it seems like everything was dead to begin with, now that I started the file back up again. Well, at least it got rid of my dwarves!

I've begun construction in the interest of doing this myself. The people of the chasm will provide ample training for my military in preparation for the final battle with the demons. >:o

DF General Discussion / Way to disable outdoor armor/wep hauling
« on: August 28, 2006, 09:18:00 pm »
An axedwarf with the caravan died to a pack of unicorns, and now my dwarves keep running out to pick his equipment up and aside from not doing any work, several of them are also being killed. Is there any way to stop this behavior aside from disabling Item Hauling on all 55 of my dwarves? :/

Well, that's dwarven ingenuity for sure, and I don't see a flavorful or logical reason why I would want demons to be changed to NOT get flattened by bridges, so... congrats!

I'm going into my third year now, and we found the lava, but I cannot find iron for the life of me so we're still a bit off from fighting the demons. We're going to do it the traditional way, though, with sword and spear, axe and bow. >:o

I'm not sure I understand, so clarify for me-- you defeated the demons by flattening them under retractable bridges?

DF General Discussion / Taking advantage of human caravans
« on: August 28, 2006, 01:42:00 pm »
En route to my trade depot, a large amount of caravan guards were killed by unicorns. The "large" equipment we recovered was obviously useless to us dwarves, so I offered it back to the humans as trade, and it was massively valuable to them. Are they going to be pissed at me about this?

I think I use some of those plants for brewing instead of processing, and I'm not sure that they give seeds back then.

It is, you just have to cook items that are inedible otherwise-- usually seeds.

What? I thought you couldn't use them as weapons, since there's no option to fight with them in the Soldiering/Hunting equipment menu.

I'd get extra picks before I get extra axes, because at least in my experience I tend to hit silver first and you can forge silver battle axes but not silver picks. Plus there's the fact one or two lumherjacks can keep up with demand pretty much straight through to your first migration.

If one of my dwarves incorporated artwork of tentacle demons into his creations, I think I would kill that dwarf fairly fast.

DF General Discussion / cage trap aftermath
« on: August 18, 2006, 10:41:00 pm »
Well, I caught Zeunebzeuth the giant toad in a cage trap, but now that cage trap is just sitting in the middle of my living quarters and I have no idea what to do with it.

Is there anything I can do with it? Can I tame him, can I cook him, can I at least move him?
