DF Gameplay Questions / Embarking near Magma
« on: August 23, 2010, 01:40:10 pm »
So I just made my first huge (30min+ generation) world with 200 volcanoes in it, and holy shit there are a lot of volcanoes.  Unfortunately, I can't find a perfect embark spot (river, no aquifer, volcano, decent tree cover) and I really don't want to use the find tool because it will take another half hour.

My question is, when I'm embarking near a volcano, does the volcano actually have to be in my embark zone for me to easily access magma, or will there be a high chance of finding magma if I embark, say, 2 squares away from a volcano?

Life Advice / What the hell am I going to do with this English major?
« on: August 21, 2010, 02:51:02 pm »
I'm about to start my 5th year of school (doing a quick victory lap) to get an English BA.  I was an English Education major, decided to fuck that shit and become a plain old English major.

The problem is, I was an Education major because people told me how useless an English major is.  That, or I always hear it in jokes (being waited on by English majors, English major being a bank teller, etc.)  Now that I'm a regular English major and people ask me what I want to do with it, I have nothing to tell them because I imagine this diploma being completely useless.

Right now, I'm thinking grad school is a necessity.  I have to specialize in something.  I'm thinking Marketing (I hear there's money there, and shit, I could come up with a Coors Light Coldness Window), maybe law school? (very fringe idea)  or I'd love to get into Psychology.  The only problem is that I worry about not being able to do anything with a Masters in Psych, or that I'd be completely unprepared for the coursework.

tl;dr  Is anyone here an English major?  Do you feel as bleakly about it as I do?  What can I do with this piece of crap?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves not dumping anything?
« on: August 20, 2010, 11:50:15 pm »
It seems my dwarves have stopped dumping anything I've told them to.  All the dumps I have are accessible, as well as the stuff I've tried throwing out.  Many of them have the Cleaning/Hauling skills all enabled as well, its like they're just ignoring the mess.

Anyone know what's up with this?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / df2010 Combat Logging?
« on: August 20, 2010, 02:31:08 pm »
I've read and seen a lot of people talking about combat logs; it seems like it definitely enhances combat.  I've tried to find something similar in 2010 and failed- is there any sort of combat logging?

DF Gameplay Questions / The ultimate trash dump
« on: August 20, 2010, 11:31:26 am »
So I'm trying to make a garbage dump chute that would be open space for ~4 zlevels and then the dump on the bottom.

I'm wondering if the dwarves will know to throw stuff down the empty space, or would they just think the dump was inaccessible?  Do I have to do some sort of pressure plate trick to make an autodump for them?

DF Gameplay Questions / Location hotkeys
« on: August 19, 2010, 02:28:08 pm »
I know that when you hit F1 it returns you to the place you first embarked, but I'm wondering if you can set hotkeys to jump to certain locations, like forges, stockpiles, etc.  I like to dig way down before I actually start making my fort, but hitting shift+> over and over gets pretty old...

DF Gameplay Questions / Digging big pits
« on: August 19, 2010, 09:29:59 am »
I was wondering what the best way to long, deep shafts (twss) is.  If I had my dwarves dig a 4x4 channel straight down, they would get trapped at the bottom, and having an auxiliary staircase kind of ruins the aesthetics for me.

Is there any way to make a clean, deep pit?

DF Gameplay Questions / No migrants?
« on: August 11, 2010, 12:28:10 pm »
I'm having a problem with a slowly dwindling number of dwarves.  They slopped around and were too lazy to get all the goods/trade with TWO caravans in a row so I wasn't able to export any of the ridiculous amount of stonecrafts I have.  Add a few goblin ambushes and some failed flood-trap experimenting and my numbers are shrinking at an alarming rate. The problem?

Ten seasons have gone by with "Your fortress failed to attract any dwarves this season."

Is this because I haven't shown the world, through the caravan, that we are a thriving fortress?  Is something messed up in the init files?  I need more dwarves!
