ive built a little alcove in the wall with a single tile bridge in the center, and a floodgate to seal the entrance. everything is hooked up, the bridge is lifted, the floodgate is open, ive placed an active dumping zone beneath the bridge, turned off my stone dump, designated all my hair/cartilage/vermin remains for dumping, but no dwarves are moving the garbage into the compactor. any idea why?

is it possible to catch fish and other swimming creatures in submerged cage traps? I want to capture a breeding pair of whales. Ive heard that whales are rare, but the butchering returns are mad. my plan would be to carve out an area 1 z level deep and fill it with cage traps, then open up the sides to the sea, hoping that sea beasties would swim through and be caught. not sure if this is possible though, especially since theres a good chance they dont touch the bottom and the trap is probably triggered by pressure :( if not, maybe you have some other ideas on capturing them? whales are ideal but id love to do any sort of fish farm. perhaps i should just use floodgates around the area to seal them in, possibly with connections to a pen area with two rows of floodgates to prevent exit. Im also curious how the game decides if an animal should stay permanently or not. for example, i once caught some draltha's underground in a small area but they disappeared later.

so ive noted that mechanisms are worth more than statues...so if i decorate a room with a lever, and link it to a whole bunch of stuff, would all the mechanisms in that lever count towards room value? Ill probably link them to floor grates in my hallways, since those are walkable, dont look so bad, and are easily mass produced.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / undwarfly behaviour

so i have been playing a fortress recently where i forbid digging from the start. my dwarves are building above ground houses made of wood. my militia is clad in turtle shell armor and my militia commander has a migrant miners steel pick as a weapon. that miner happens to be bedridden due to a giant tiger attack. i have a few dead dwarves from that conflict in wooden coffins chilling in my dormitory, since they had to be built indoors and i dont have many rooms yet. thoughts?

im thinking of embarking on a freezing map mostly covered by ocean, and here's my question: if i create ice by freezing water, as opposed to construction, then cave it in over water, will it plummet to the bottom of the ocean, where i can then stack more on top thereby eventually creating a giant icebox that i can drain? or will it collide with the surface layer of ice over the ocean and refuse to fall any further?

so ive caught fish (turtles) in aquifer holes, but they dont show up as fishable when zoning. does placing the zone have any benefit in this instance?
