i changed the stockpile settings so that any stockpile enabled for food would have a barrel limit of zero and be disabled for booze, and any stockpile enabled for booze would be disabled for food, and have a full barrel limit. that should show them i mean business. as my friend said, dwarves find the strangest ways to kill themselves...

i reserved 8 barrels in the stockpile menu, yet there are apparently none empty for my still when i try to produce alcohol. checking the food stockpile, there are none with alcohol in them, and it seems the dwarves have filled all the barrels with plants even though they were reserved? i thought maybe there was no room for the food elsewhere or something, but i checked and there is room. this is incredibly annoying, because as a result my dwarves are without booze and complaining of thirst. since i have no wood, it is absolutely imperative that they dont fill all the barrels with food. does anyone know why this is happening? if not, is there a way to dump the food out of the barrels? i cant afford for this to keep happening, i already had tons of dwarves die of thirst for this reason in a previous game.

if you are worried about miasma, something i found useful : a tile exposed to the surface counts as above ground permanently - even if you build a roof over it, a refuse pile there should not generate miasma. so just dig a channel down from the surface to cover the area you want the refuse pile in, then floor it back over. incineration is another option, but only if you have magma, and if you're careful how you do it.

i had embarked into a 'terrifying' tundra full of zombies, with no trees, and so i had limited barrels...i grew too many plump helmets and the dwarves filled up the barrels that were for booze with the mushrooms. then maybe 20 dwarves died. i dug out a water ditch from an aquifer so they can drink now, and after they stopped going ballistic and having to be locked in bedrooms or strangling dogs, things started to bounce back, especially with a new wave of migrants... but im wondering if i can reserve some barrels for booze? other than designating a pile for barrels and locking the dwarves out, i have no idea how to do this.

Fairly new to the game, for my third fortress I just embarked into a freezing, terrifying tundra full of zombies. my hacked up cart provided just enough wood for a carpenters workshop, a table, and a bed. i have removed all stairs leading to surface level, and after trying the freezing method of bypassing aquifers, i finally have access to stone :D I think its time to brick off all entrances from the surface too. Wondering what other crazy embarks people would recommend trying?
