you could have the cells two z layers tall with a channelled top with sets of halls on both floors. the bottom layer has door access. dump the food in from above

non-soldiering dorves are indeed sensitive, fearful creatures. soldiering dorves are insanely brave and reckless. I had an untrained 'wrestler' dorf chase a polar bear around the map with his bare hands the other day.

actually i can confirm that grates can be built over natural stone or dirt floors. this increases room value, and once they get a proper image in the mayday tileset, they might not be so ugly. i think youre probably right about the furniture thing

i seem to remember being able to do this in the older version, then finding that the stockpile options were different :S i wanted to have the bones and stuff in an 'inside' refuse pile so they wouldnt disappear eventually

i had this same problem with the farmers. if you placed the farm plot before all the tiles were muddied, apparently that might prevent them from using it. try removing it and placing a new one in the same spot once all the tiles are muddy. i also heard that if it is too near the end of the season they might not plant, but idk, and if you have plump helmets on all seasons i should hope that wouldnt be the case.
