DF Gameplay Questions / file compression
« on: August 26, 2010, 02:37:12 pm »
I've had a few corrupted sites that I had to delete to enter, so I thought I'd turn off compression to see what difference it makes. Before I do that, can anyone tell me the HD space to expect? I'm playing a 256x256 world.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Lashers: are they supposed to be so vicious?
« on: August 26, 2010, 02:28:57 pm »
In adventure mode, I used an iron whip with middling skill on a Bronze Colossus, and he had body parts gouged red in about a minute. But real life combat whips can trash a car.  Seriously, look them up; they're mean as hell, and I don't doubt they'd put hurting on a steel-clad dwarf no matter how bombed out of his skull he is.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: How to aim a thrown object.
« on: August 26, 2010, 01:39:20 pm »
Even with legendary throwing and archery, aim has a lot of error at greater range. But I wonder if it has to do with aerodynamics of the item. Thrown arrows hit most the time, and daggers, spears and pikes can be pretty lethal. But sharpened rocks, even masterpiece quality, thrown further than four spaces away are about 5lbs of worthless weight from your inventory.

until you make them your enemy.
That's exactly it; if you've made them your enemy, the threat value of traveling through their lands should increase, especially if they're a major world power.

DF Suggestions / perception
« on: August 26, 2010, 01:30:06 pm »
Couldn't a high spatial/kinesthetic sense increase range of perception, perhaps even offset blindness to some degree? Shouldn't we be able to shoot enemies through the dark the same way they do to us?

Also, if your enemy is booming out a litany of brags, couldn't we at least get a direction indicator? At that point you can assume they're not sneaking in, and that you'd hear their stomping or pounding feet as they approach.

I believe they expand no further than forested areas, but if you have a world with vast expanses of wood and/or interconnected forests, it's possible for them to reach that size. The same with dwarves with enough mountain zone, though a world like that would be a bitch to travel across.

DF Suggestions / Re: minotaur labyrinth

Simply scattering random loot and increasing monster populations around a minotaur would ease the tedium of hunting them. I don't think it takes any dedicated design, procedural generation would could handle it.

Adventure mode: Same as encounters in savage or evil lands, traveling in enemy lands could cross your path with aggressives, if the warlord or general of the enemy sects are still in the area.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: storage

I expect everything to move, but it's a small and completely flat ,site so it should be easy to catch in daylight. At the time I dropped it, it was also an uncluttered site; at this moment, if it does re-appear, it could be buried under tons of shit.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / storage

How do you store stuff? I found what I thought was a good place, a square of land that didn't generate a cave entry, so all five giants were wandering in the open. Anything I dropped on the ground remained. But dragon meat doesn't keep unless it's contained, so I got a backpack to hold that and my excess coin. That backpack vanished.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your adventure?
« on: August 26, 2010, 07:02:18 am »
Whew, this Empire is huge! I have collected memberships in 47 cults, and that wasn't even as many cities as I visited; some towns had missing or deceased priests, some had priests in churches I was already a member of. But in the course of this trek, I got a view of the big picture:

I come from the only surviving elven nation. Most of them died out within 50 years of history, some from rampages, some gone within 10 years of coming into contact with another nation. My people, I'll call them the Swift, survived rampages and existed for 800 years on the border of the biggest human Empire around. In fact this Empire, I'll call them the Fruity Feds (the name alone is reason for them to die,) rolled over everything else in it's path and left it all in ruins, until it hit the border of the Swift and it could go no further (you shall not pass!) They got one flickering square into the Swift, and it stayed that way for 800 years.

The only other elvish settlements around are in the Fed's closest competitor, the Sol-Talons for short. They were all gradually absorbed, and though I doubt it was a bloodless takeover, those retreats still have their own local governments and are thriving today. There isn't a single ruin in Sol-Talons, all cities were incorporated intact, which makes them look like the most likely ally to bet on. Though they worship a titan I may one day have to kill, at least their law-giver isn't a demon.

But the Fruity Feds aren't at war with them, they're still fighting rebellion from a few cities they already occupy and surround. I expect those people will give me the funnest jobs after I kick off holy war. And I'm still intensely curious to find how the warlords of the Fed will react to me capping their ruling fiend after I've done them all so many favors.

I just got thrown off a cliff by a skeletal hydra and survived. I took her out with a silver dagger, but I didn't get credit for it as a significant kill, presumably because she was already dead. According to her Legend, Icithi Largesucked simply 'collapsed'.

The Coven of Loving. I don't know Toady's sense of humor well enough to know whether that's too cheesy to be intentional.

Also, the name 'Testdungeon' managed to get into worldgen. It doesn't appear on the map, but events there are on crafts and in Legends.

I'm playing an elf, and I've managed to outlive all my dwarven companions. But if my tribe goes, that's it: I'm taking out everybody.

But as much as I hang out with dwarves, I'll probably get into a drunken fistfight with a load-bearing support and win. Good night.

It looks like there's a plague of 'natural causes' sweeping the world -- it's 5 years into my career and there's at least one death in most towns, up to 8 in one I've found. I found 6 dead in a temple and thought the holy war had started without me. According to Legends, all died of old age.
