General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress Clone?
« on: May 15, 2011, 10:11:28 am »
Hey, just stumbled apon this 'clone' from over on the stonesense thread.

There is no procedurely generated world in this game. I think this singular reason sets DF and DwarvesH apart. I see a villiage/fortress simulator, but not a world one.

I really love DF. However, I freaking hate it's interface. Everyone i've ever recommended DF to has outright rejected playing it is because of the interface (and these are hardcore ASCII roguelike players to boot!)

So I say this competition is a good thing. Maybe toady will get inspired by DwarvesH's stunning interface enough to finally get around to implement something worthy of his masterpiece. If not, DwarvesH should be welcome to earn money from users that are not even going to bother playing DF in the first place. If you don't accomodate the users, they'll go elsewhere. Hell, i'll donate to DwarvesH if it's any good(im an avid DF donator BTW, as should everyone else on this forum).

One thing that should be changed in dwarvesH ASAP though is the names of objects and plants. That's going to annoy alot of DF players. I think an evening on plugging in your own names would do the project alot of good and personally I think it'd be alot of fun.

*note* Please lets not start a debate about the merits of DF not supporting a half decent interface yet. I've read all the reasons before. Theres plenty of threads on the subject and i've read most of them, so not really anything new can be added by by getting into one of those debates again.

Tilesets and Graphics / Re: Ironhand's Graphics Set (nothin' new)
« on: May 13, 2011, 04:23:29 am »
Bethesda Softworks is the evil Organisation that has robbed us of one of our great pixel artists!

Are 'secrets' the start of a spell type system?? Man, spells would be pretty cool in a system where ancient secrets are passed down and eventually obtainable by the adventurer. I could see necromancy as a player 'secret' split into a couple things. Proficency with the secret learned and parts of the secret you know.

Hrmm.. well im sure that he can take donations for pixel artwork. In any event, i'm also transfering funds to donate to toady, which I may not have done so soon otherwise(usually wait for an update before I donate).

Support our pixel artists! It's alot of work and creativity to put in. Donations can always go toward GFX tablets, better hardware, or even just to get a few drinks with friends to boost moral and stimulate creativity.

Gold plated support! Wish that you could accept donations for your work!
Be careful what you wish for! ;)

Nice one! Transfering some money into paypal account now... Takes 3-5 working days to clear though :/ Expect a dontation after it clears :D

I wonder how toady would feel about some kind of donation drive to add some better graphical support. I mean, right now we have two very talented pixel artists and it would be a shame to loose you guys before he gets around to making those updates! Imagine the possibilties with RGB support and dedicated tiles(and other features im probably not aware are needed/requested).

Guess it depends, do you want substance in a game and are happy with no graphical stimulation?, or are you happy to provide all the substance yourself and require graphical stimulation?

If you picked a game with substance, then go with DF. Otherwise, MC is the sandboxing utopia for you! Of course some like abit of this and abit of that, so some people are going to play some of both.

I love DF all the way, i'm well and truely done with shallow, glamour games with no personality, played them all, DF continues to bring new depths and concepts that mainstream gaming does not. Plus there are a couple of real champions in the modding forum bringing in visual stimulation that is really first rate for the limited graphics capabilities they have to work with.

Gold plated support! Wish that you could accept donations for your work!

Oh how i've missed the gold plated set (although your set has always been fairly similar). Would you be able to add in the gold plated walls as an option?

Wow, you've really opened up doors with your tileset assembler. Custom tilesets without having to wrap your brain around DF's internal workings!

Sweet, thanks for the quick and informative reply :D

Regarding the future bloat implementation below, and seeings that ghosts are now getting attention from you, can we expect to see some ghost based lever pulling soon?

Also are there any plans to have ghosts be active AND invisable some of the time, so then when poltergeist type activities occur, it would add some mystery to how those events actually happened? Adventure mode with ghosts could be quite creepy and cool if instead of seeing the ghost every time, you instead see a chair slide accross the floor, or get a message saying you felt a cold shiver(ghost passing through you/trying to interact with you)

# Bloat21, VARIOUS GHOST IDEAS, (Future): Blame the lever puller for flooded dungeon, make a ghost constantly pull the lever. Save relationships with various entities and have ghosts react to entity members as they would in life possibly. Ghosts can show you their bodies. Ghosts can pretend to do their old jobs. Ghost appearance can depend on how they died. Could force the adventurer to interact with ghosts to access now-secret parts of the fortress (could also use writings and legends for this). It can keep outposts that it normally throws away for fun little ghost stories. If the dwarves hate the elves, the ghosts could guide the adventurer to a poisoned goblet or insultingly engraved object to bring back to the elves, and they could lie to the player about it.

DF Suggestions / Re: Rodent infestations! IE, making cats useful
« on: May 05, 2011, 01:50:41 am »
It would be nice for vermin to get a rewrite, im sure that toady also wants to get to this at some point, but doesn't yet know how he is going to implement it.

I really like your tunnel idea though! That could be pretty cool, to have a miner breach a nest and have rats or mice or other burrowing vermin come pouring out and scatter all over the place.

They could even make nests inside boxes, barrels or furnature that hasn't been touched for some time. Then when someone goes to use that barrel, BAM! ratsplosion, with rats running off in different directions.

While I don't think they need full blown pathfinding like animals, I don't particularly like how they work now, they should be able to have some kind of limited pathfinding to food and shelter and away from danger(dwarfs, cats), even if only restricted to small areas, and be more persistant like other animals.

Varied is nicer IMO.

I heard that mono can be a real pain. There must be some script around that'd port over your .net gui without much hassle though. Could be a !fun! learning experience anyhow.

I noticed that with the introduction of the new floor/grass tiles, that the next level down tiles(the dark ones with the dots in the middle that arn't sky) became darker, any chance they could be brightened back up?

Quick question i'm hoping someone would be kind enough to answer, or even be pointed to other projects that may already do a similar thing.

Is it possible to read what the current menu in fortress mode is through dfhack?

For example, if I were to press 'd' and bring up the designations menu, is there a value that I can access through dfhack that tells me that menu is open?

Criptfeind, you don't have to like or agree with my posts, but don't go putting words in my mouth through forgery. Atleast you didn't try to palm your 'assessment' off as what I wrote this time.

For the record though, im not American, because like you said yourself, "there are more then Americans on this thread". So no, I never said I was happy, even though relief and happiness are 2 seperate things.

Do not blame people for enjoying his death. Blame him for being the sorta guy who's death is enjoyable.

Enjoying the death of another is to many an unwholesome notion, so i'd probably hold off on accusing me of mental health issues.

I am glad he is dead.

How fucked up is America that people from all over the world are glad he is dead?

What the heck was this
I did not post what you quoted me saying, so what the heck is with your post??

I said it was morbid that people are celebrating his death with open glee and joy rather than the sober relief that justice is finally dealt. I'm not defending the guy, he was a religious/fanatical monster with no regard for the sanctity of life and had it comming.

I'll give you the benifit of the doubt that you didn't misquote me on purpose.

Americans can now sigh a relief that they put the monster they created down finally.

I find it pretty morbid how many people are getting pleasure out of death. Sure he was a bad guy, but noone should ever take pleasure in anothers death. Makes me respect Americans even less than I already do.
