Cannons rule.  You can put them on boats and fire them at those giant blobs of afk fishermen.  Siege workshops aren't in yet but when they are I think I found the new thing to spend most of my crafting one (currently doing armor upgrades and wagon wheels)

That sounds like it would be great. Especially with a group of friends. Trolly, but hilarious.

The most recent Batman game was supposedly a horrible PC port that would floor most graphics cards. It may have been fixed by now, but it should still give your box a bit of a workout.

I don't know if the regular driving sections could be considered self-abuse, but otherwise it seemed like it was "ok" as a game, if you haven't already burnt out on the series yet. Turn it all way up and see how quickly it tries to fry things.

Unless you're running 5th edition, where good berries are a flat 10 berries per cast. They also feed you all day.

So a first level druid is happily taking care of the needs of 20 people a day (including himself), which is a reasonable portion of a 100 member village. At second level it's 30 people, and maybe 40 if you're a land druid. The village can have an awesome hunter/livestock protector if he happens to be a moon druid instead. They also tend to come with the guidance cantrip, which makes anyone better at any skill, giving yokels a better chance at not being stupid or incompetent. He can also tell you what the weather will be like that day, which is handy for a farming village to know, or insta-bloom many crops, even if it would take a while for an entire field to be done, with his Druidcraft cantrip.

If you want to be generous and give the village a lvl3 land druid, he can feed 80 people by himself. That's a pretty good chunk of the population, and lvl3 people aren't entirely uncommon (though it's unlikely that every village has one). I could make up some decent multi-classed variations that could pump this figure up higher, or have other benefits, but a lvl1 druid is still feeding 20% of the population by himself, while doing other druidy things for them too. And 5th is the most recent edition, so I'm using that as source, even if 3.5ed is more popular.

A tenth level "oddity" could feed 150 people, 200 if he was a land druid, or make the land more fertile in general as well. At great need, that's two entire hamlets taken care of, within a few minutes. If you want to be even more generous, multiclass him with lvls of sorcerer, and the font makes those numbers skyrocket. But you don't really need to. A lvl1 druid is fine for the sake of the argument.


At worst, not everyone starves. At best, the relief on the food stores of the community makes farming easier or more profitable (or more taxable I guess). Or those 20 people can occupy themselves in entirely different trades, providing a far higher quality of life for the entire community. I'm not saying farming doesn't occur, just that magic makes everything easier. Including not starving.

It works for d&d style game-worlds, but there's plenty of others where the afterlife isn't as concretely good/bad/divine, and people get resurrected in them all the time.

From a societal standpoint, it's heartbreaking for the ones that aren't ressed, yet didn't necessarily have a better or worse place to go, due to their deeds in life. Or if there is, heaven sometimes has a hero/lvl cap, where you have to be really damn good to not just become a part of some wibbly wobbly "nice" thingamajig. So having another crack at not only becoming "good soul slushie" would be worthwhile.

Heroes get constellations. Peasants get, ummmm, nice stuff?

And if there's just nothing after, or nothing worthwhile not living for, wouldn't you want to remain living? Especially if the only chance of paradise you have, is in the place you live, with death simply being a finality of existence unless you're resurrected.

Worthwhile another crack at it if you could be ressed, imo. Constellations, floating to the top of the slushie, or a "heaven on earth" for the effort. Especially when some are being ressed, and some not, you'd revolve your life around being one of the "haves", rather than the "dead".


Even from the D&D perspective (a horribly broken and stupid gameworld, but simply well known), a low level druid can feed plenty of people with goodberries. You literally shouldn't be able to have a story of starvation in the game world. Yet the peasants still toil in their fields, and sometimes starve due to famines, instead of having a quality of life unsurpassed. And they work, live and die, all while the uncaring deities, magicians and kings look on and ponder whether resurrection is "right for them". All things considered, a horribly dystopian world, and any afterlife world look better to a peasant, knowing what they could come back to. Or even a cessation of existence as a reasonable blessing for their toils.

But before those stopping points, it all gets a bit worrying. That the churches preach to the peasants "This is your lot in life, be content with it.", while ressing the rich and powerful.

That most of the higher-ups stay dead does show that maybe there's something to it. When you can literally talk to dead people, or travel to that plane and ask in person, heaven probably makes a lot more sense. It really is pretty damn good, and it tends to be the BBEGs that get into necromancy and being raised, because they really don't want to stay where they went. And it has to be a pretty extreme reason for a good guy to want to intercede if it's new business that hasn't got much to do with them.

Good guys:

"Hey Tim, sorry to interrupt your existence of eternal contentment, but we've got dragon problems again. In a dungeon. Should be pretty easy. There's riches, fame and bitches in it for you as well."

"What? Fuck! Again? Ok then, but this is the last time! In fact, nah, fuck ya. You sort it. I'm not leaving this awesome place to travel to your tiny, little, shithole world and sort your problems in some dank dungeon. Not my problem, bro. I've done my bit, that's why I'm here. You deal with it."

It's surprising that this isn't pointed out as the main plot point of most RPGs that include buyable resurrection. Sure, your job is dangerous. But you'll take those dangers on, just so you've got a glimmer of a chance to not die forever like all the other lvl1 peasant slobs.

Mama would be so proud! In fact, I'll res her and ask her how proud when I'm finished this side-quest.....

Well, got to Arena 5, and am merrily bouncing back and forth between that and Arena 4. Which goes to show, you don't have to be THAT good to get there. Or even play sober sometimes. I'm hoping skill comes into it a lot more at this point.

But I can happily conclude that being drunk does make you worse, so it's not entirely a Pokemon-like, with time being the limiter rather than XP/Level. So it is somewhat skill based. But time does sub in for skill sometimes, because that's how you get higher level cards. But you can still lose quite easily with higher level stuff (especially when drunk).

It makes you wonder just how unliked you'd have to be in an RPG world if nobody wanted to resurrect you. In the ones where resurrection is affordable by people of the about middle class income.

Heaven must be really good not to want to come back from, otherwise you would, wouldn't you? Even if it was hard to, or cost a lot. Almost a reverse of what people irl do here. It'd be so you could be with your loved ones. The living ones.

I mean, even if it was several years' worth of income, or a decade's worth, so's paying off a house. I'd certainly put it as a pretty high priority to resurrect my wife/child/parents/friends if given the option. Screw it, I'll rent.

Perhaps old age could be the final nail in the coffin. Or an unwilling deity. Or an unwilling person. Or the time between being dead and resurrection being too long.

But to die and have no one even attempt to raise you would be a pretty terrible fate. It also gives a reason for all your whacky adventures. "I've got a sword and some cash. Sure I can take down an army and the evil magician. I mean, I'll try. And if I fail, I'll just pretend it was a practical joke and pay for resses all-round." The potential fame and fortune is to ensure people want you alive, and will be able to pay for it.


It also highlights the massive disparity of wealth in these worlds. It's not just quality of life, it's life itself that is at stake. Your income, connections and standing in a church literally determines whether you live or die. Forever. The rich get richer, the poor just go away and die somewhere, never to return. Probably cursing the very gods that allowed this state of affairs to be so.

D&D is about as grimdark as WH40k in many respects.


It also has similarities of a rich businessman putting a hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold onto his medical insurance. Isn't he nice? But there'll have to be some sort of payback. What do you do for a job again? Does Kelban in EotB2 promise something similar to the adventurers? Just how many benefits do you get from your benefactors, considering the suicide missions they send you on? It'd make more sense if there was that sort of stuff explained as payment for your services, and explains why adventurers willingly flock to the call of the elite. Damn good health cover, that's why.

I'm wondering if the whole DX/Mantle/Vulcan releases will kick the specs down a tad? Fair enough, it's necessary to double render everything, but I wouldn't be surprised if some things get worked out in the render pipeline to make that a bit easier. They are two different "cameras/viewports", but they're pretty damn close together for standard binocular vision.

There's lots of things that only have to be loaded once and used used twice (to use a fairly incorrect analogy). But GPUs are multicore parallel by default, so there are ways.....

Ps3 got pretty sexy by the end of the console's run, x86 hardware is going to end up the same. In some respects, standardized console hardware should make it easier to push the techniques, with easy flow-over to PC (and all it's horribly dissimilar configurations). GTA5 was worlds ahead on render distances compared to early PS3 releases, just due to a few well known coding tricks that weren't used as well up until that time. So I'm assuming similar twinned-pipeline, direct-to-hardware coding tricks will come into being pretty soon for VR. It's usually better/faster than dealing with another layer of middle-ware between your good coding and fast screen output. Screen 1 and Screen 2 is a thing in VR.

It's still a graphics card bottleneck, but CPU specs may not need to be as vigorous once Vulcan, etc come through properly, as well as CPU->GPU pipelines getting properly sorted for twin displays, freeing up some processing resources for most users.

Is split-screen local multiplayer that hard to do? Not really, but it does use more GPU power. VR is like that, but you've got a really good chance that all models, brushes, textures, shaders and lights all get used twice in every frame. Those two "viewports" tend to be pretty close together asset-wise on rendering the final scene, even if you're a giant mecha. But all at full render resolution, through different "monitor ports", one for each eye. In a way, it's no different from split-screen, or anything that renders multiple viewports/cameras. There's already very good ways of doing so, but utilizing multi-core parallelism has never been one of indy dev's strong points. And that's what half of VR seems to be right now. Tech demos and indy 1-shots. When the big boys go "Oh, we've already got rendering pipelines that do that, we call it "split-screen and multi-monitor support"", a lot of problems go away.

They'll still want you to buy a 970+. It makes framerate problems go away too.

To actually answer your questions:

1: Yep. Skip the first pogrom. If you've got plenty of smoke and prods, you might want to try and pull a quick capture for research purposes. Or just blast anything near the Bonny, grab some loot, and go. Don't worry too much about it until you get some good weapons (Assault Cannons or GLs make a huge difference, and a fair few flamers mixed with some longer ranged stuff).

2: Flamers, prods, AC w/exploding, bows, handles/fisticuffs, maces, beer, bandages, boarding guns, hunting rifles and plenty of bombs/smoke/grenades. Pre-prime (right click in loadout screen) a fair few smoke grenades to carry with you, it's just a cost of doing business, and very handy to have. Much like Xcom, hitting hard or accurately isn't difficult early on, but there's only a few things that do it well. Smoke grenades make cover easy, especially since you can pre-prime them in OXC, saving a stack of TUs when you really need them. Sniper rifles/gauss weapons/lasers/anything tasty are better, but everything listed is very early game or can be bought straight away. There's no real Laser Rifle analog in XPiratez early in the research tree, and there's plenty of ways of playing that can be successful. Some swear by lots of bows, I just use them as an occasional tool-weapon. Not many people use bikinis and flamers/prods as far as I know, but I'm very successful with them. See how you like playing, and get good at that style. The Linux SMG is probably the closest thing you'll get to a Laser Rifle analog, but it requires ammo, isn't as accurate due to distance dropoff, and I wouldn't recommend kitting out all your gals with one. Unless you want to.

3?: Put some x-grog on the bonny. A strong gal with a prod/mace/fisticuffs/flamer in one hand and a barrel in the other is damn handy. Easier than messing around with bandages and beer constantly imo. I try and take as much inventory woes out of the game as possible, and 1-2 gals kitted like this does that well. Armour them however you want, but use them exactly like you use a normal mêlée trooper. The healing/stamina is just a bonus, and a pair of them can do some pretty insane things for your squad. Without ever touching the inventory screen.

4?: Parrots are God's gift to the gals. Always bring one. It'll die eventually, but it'll do amazing things that you can't until it does. Have a couple of spares in base. High TU flying is ace. Your best spotter for ages, can fly above your own smoke for spotting, and can grenade/smoke stuff through roof holes when required. Vision is key, and Parrots give you that in boatloads.

Get used to getting in close, even if you're shooting at something. You might have a snipers' nest, or an archers' range, or a fire support team, but in close is where you do the actual work. Hit <ALT> to see what way they're facing, and hit them from behind. <CTRL> Running saves you from a lot of reaction fire. Captures are your goal, kills are just to make sure they happen, without your people dying while you do them.

Cattleprods are great for early captures. You get them by researching Contacts:Smugglers, then buying them from the black market. They're cheap and hit for plenty of stun damage, but they're slow as hell. Handles and fisticuffs are your other option for stuns, but prods work for weak, inaccurate gals, and do enough damage that a bit of armour isn't a huge problem.

+1 to flamethrowers. They're everything they say they're not. They look expensive, but they're cheap to run. They're accurate, as even a 6% chance to-hit still hits a lot. They pack stacks of damage with 8 shots hitting under armour with incendiary, even at only 20 damage. They're about exactly the same range as anything automatic in the early game, because not much hits beyond 9 tiles anyway. They're good. And very satisfying.

Spiked maces are good if you don't mind a bit of lethal mixed with a slight chance of a capture. You get them by researching Primitive Weapons. There's better mêlée weapons, but maces aren't bad, and they're cheap to make (4 scrap metal and a bit of time). Think of it as "bonus captures", rather than any actual chance to plan for them.

+1mil to smoke grenades. They're amazing as always.

Try out Gym Suits and Bikinis. Some people swear by having stacks of armour and beer. I personally swear by having heaps of TUs and Stamina to run wherever I want. Especially early on, when the armour you can get isn't that much better than your skin. Honestly, you probably won't miss the inventory space once you get used to it, but you'll love always having a heap of energy for running and mêlée captures. They essentially make you money, because you'll go for captures more often, instead of just shooting people. Good armour is good, but bikinis really do save you messing around as much on the inventory screen. Get them by researching Our Abilities, Gym Suits, Mutant Porn and Bikinis. Until you've got better armour, you may as well have an assault team of 4 quick gals (at least). Try it out and see if it fits your playstyle.

The Linux SMG is surprisingly good. It's about as accurate as any other SMG/automatic (ie: not very), but at least it hits pretty hard with its 38 damage. Not quite a boarding gun, but not as heavy/slow either. Definitely an upgrade to most of the vendor trash you can buy at the start. You get it by researching Guns and Ammunition Manufacturing, and Linux SMG.

+1 to Assault Cannons with Expl.Cannonballs. +3 actually. They don't seem great until you have 3-4 of them. Then they seem awesome. Not too hard to make, cheap ammunition, and fairly accurate at "reasonable range". I don't actually use them for sniping, I run them up with my gals and create a small firebase under smoke cover. Makes them more accurate because they're closer, and gives you the option to run inside on bigger ufos pretty quickly. They're not perfect, but they are very multifunctional. Cheap is good, but you can go grenade launchers or mortars if you want. I like the bit of extra range over GLs, but with way more mobility than Mortars, that the Assault Cannons bring. They're what make mutant pogroms (Terror Missions) seem possible, and even just moderately difficult, though long as hell to slog through. Even a fairly weak gal in runt duds can bring one and a fair bit of ammo.


Selling off between 10-30 of your scrap pile isn't bad at the start, for a hefty cash boost. You don't need it early, you won't have time to manufacture it down anyway (or much to use the scrap/chems/wire on), but $50-150k is very useful to get going. Keep a fair bit, but don't be too concerned if you sell quite a lot of it. By the time you really need it, you can just buy the bits and pieces if you need them for making stuff (excepting gun almanacs, etc).
