I was approached in my mechanics workshop by the liasion as the others were loading the goods onto the depot. He had some concerns about the "fine" crafts we wanted to sell them.

Asmel: Greetings from the mountainhomes, blah blah blah. What the hell are you guys loading onto the depot?
Me: Fine rock crafts made out of equally fine dolomite, of course.
Asmel: Fine? Rock crafts? Are you kidding me? Do you think what the mountainhomes need right now are mugs and figurines? Made out of a flux stone as well? Did you fail forge class or don't you know what a flux stone is?
Me: Now, now. There's no need for namecalling. You can use the crafts for both decoration and steel making. Don't you think that's a wonderful deal?

We argued for about 3 days straight about whether I was a greedy bastard or not and whether he's getting a good deal or not (Answers: Yes and no. But I argued the opposite of course) The entire fort population and the traders were trying to see the spectacle as Asmel and I yelled and hurled rock mechanisms at eachother. We eventually reached an agreement (The agreement was that the elfs were stupid and would gladly trade for those crafts, which the mountainhomes could make a horrid amount of dwarfbucks from) and I ordered booze, bags of sand, pitchblende and other useful goods for next years caravan.

It's good to be a dwarf.

Traders from the mountainhomes have arrived. We're moving all the dolomite crafts out to the trade depot and I'm setting up some chairs nearby so I can dazzle everyone with my phenomenal bullshitting skills.

Traders, meet a huge pile of useless crap!

Not much is happening here. The new job designations were well received and I took some jobs myself to show that I didn't do it to get out of working. I noticed that Mart didn't forbid dolomite from being used for stone crafting purposes so I forbid it and some other useful stones. I then dumped all the dolomite in a stockpile near the forges so that we could have all of it in one place.

I'm not going to complain about how the fort was mined out (Especially not now that I've lived here for a while) but I get the feeling that Mart dug it out at random and didn't think ahead much. I need to tell the guy about the shift-arrow designation combo trick. It made for a really nice fort layout back in Metalweak. I could navigate the fort with closed eyes and I did, until poor Bomrek fell into the magma trench in the dining room.

I let out Mart and instead of yelling at me for allegedly locking him in, he ran to the booze stockpile and started catching up with everybody else. Before diving face first into a wine barrel, he gave me control over the fort. A bit anticlimactic after the last years quiet hostilities between us, but I'm not complaining.

First thing I did was to invoke my awesome lightning powers managerial skills and gave Kulet Akmamtulon (Some guy who called himself a peasant but didn't farm any fields or did anything peasant-ish) a list of the jobs he was going to perform, which was nearly all of them in fact. I intend to make anyone who isn't proficient in a useful skill to be a generic worker who performs odd jobs. This way we won't be running out of (Let's say) tanners or carpenters when they're actually needed.

Yeah, they can still destroy that grate. Only (C)onstructions are invulnerable.

I think someone locked Mart into his quarters. I bet he thinks it was me. Sure, I was upset for a while about not being chosen to lead the fort but I didn't mind getting taken off Manager duty at all. Bloody boring job that is. Now, mechanics. THAT is something interesting. I hope I get to continue making mechanisms whenever my organizing and lying-about-how-much-this-mug-is-worth skills aren't needed.

Maybe I should let him out.

You can make obsidian shortswords already. Some hammer and axe variations would be nice though.

Delicious mechanisms.

you couldn't make Electrum until the Dungeon Master arrived (and if you tried via the job manager, it'd give you a witty retort instead).

I never played that version. What was it? :D

That would be version 0.23.130.23a (and earlier). There were no Z-levels in Fortress Mode back then, and every fortress had a cave river (which flooded each season), chasm (where you could dump garbage - there were no activity zones), magma river (which was the only place you could build magma workshops), glowing pits (from which HFS would emerge), and adamantine (which would start an "instant game over" timer once you started mining it). If you've ever read the saga of Boatmurdered, then know that it was played back in that overall version (it started in version 0.22.110.22f but gradually worked its way to later versions).

No, I meant: What was the witty retort you were referring to?

We can already make metal mechanisms at the metalsmith's forge.

Woah, awesome. I didn't know that. :D

DF Suggestions / Some suggestions for mechanisms
« on: October 26, 2010, 09:27:01 am »
Firstly, letting them be made out of other materials than stone, like glass, wood and metal. To make a mechanism out of glass, the mechanic would require a glass block, a metal bar for a metal mechanism and a log for a wooden mechanism.

Secondly, leveling up the appropiate skill somewhat in addition to the mechanic skill. If you were to make a ton of glass mechanisms, you wouldn't just have a legendary mechanic but also a fairly proficient glassmaker. (Or mason/carpenter/blacksmith)

Thirdly, allowing mechanisms to be used as a weapon in traps. They'd spin and do blunt damage to anything caught between the cogwheels, breaking bones in the process.
