A new 31.18 world got me "The Noiseless Room" and "The Hall of Bending", both Dwarven Civilizations.

Be careful to make it fireproof, otherwise the
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
can just incinerate it.

I don't think you understand the purpose of spoiler tags.  ???

Toady, with the advent of goods/caravans we will likely end up with alot of loot. I know you probably have no idea when you plan to do it, but how far down the list are the adventurer sites? Some of us can't carry all the dragon hides and diamonds that we would like to...

This is sorta already in; find a night creature lair, kill the resident, and move in. Your stuff won't move.

How hard would it be to modify the reaction to make bone bins as well? (Or can you do that by manipulating the bone RAWs alone?

Most games are repetitive motions; Pong is move the paddle up, or down. Mario is move right, jump (with some left, up, down in there for mix). WoW, I'd say, has taken it to the absurd.
For other 'repetitive motions', consider the starting builds of Warcraft or Starcraft. People analyze them to see which methods "come out" earliest, then apply those methods repeatedly until they can do them with no deviation so as to capitalize on mere seconds of timing difference.

It's a little different in Starcraft, because the driving force of that interaction is the competition, not the repetition. (It's not fun to use the same core builds endlessly, it's fun when you win the game)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Problem with surgery?
« on: December 01, 2010, 04:58:37 pm »
I had this happen in a fortress with a Novice (very Rusty) Surgeon and an injured child.  After attempting for over a year to patch her up, repeatedly taking her to the surgery table, standing there, then moving her back, the surgeon's skill level finally increased enough for him to successfully complete the operation.

Doctor:"Cheer up kid, I'm sure I'll figure it out next year!"

I must say that I enjoyed Burning Crusade's level of dungeon difficulty much more than Wrath's (though both were better than the 40-person raids).

WoW's still got some game design issues if it wants newbies to stick around (For instance, the last patch removed a need to eat/drink for the first 10 levels - out of combat regen is just that high for them) -- I hear WoW had something like only a 30% retention rate (as in, got past the first 10 levels).

It doesn't help that each expansion continues to raise the level cap -- the time investment (and money! You need to buy 4 games now!) into reaching max level continues to increase, and it doesn't help that there's such a huge disparity between dungeons, pvp, and pve.

And now that tanks are getting close to 100k health, methinks the numbers are getting exponentially overinflated as well.

I think it'd be much more interesting if Cataclysm (and its various changes) had been the 1st expansion instead of the 3rd.

Ah, but I ramble.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: My windmill stopped generating power
« on: November 30, 2010, 09:33:18 pm »
I don't have a river and can't find an aquifer. Now, if I could somehow make a magma-watermill...

Nethercap would survive, but since lava generates no flow, lava can't turn waterwheels.

Generating Flow (capital F) and being able to flow are two entirely separate things in dwarf fortress.

Did you check the dwarf to see if part of him was rotten or rotting? Check his wounds, not just loo"k"ing in his square.

Heisenburg is speeding down a highway when he gets pulled over by a cop car.

The officer walks up the Heisenburg's car, flips out a notebook, and says, "Sir, do you have any idea how fast you were going just now?"

Heisenburg is baffled by the question. "I'm afraid I do not." He eventually responds. "Though I know exactly where I am!"

Too big. It's almost 400 MB over the 100 MB cap for file uploads.

But if anybody cares enough, I'll post the world_gen and how to find the spot.

These kinds of bugs (adamantine spires, etc.) are usually not reproducible, for whatever reason.

What is the main reason to use hand crossbows by the way? Do they shoot faster?

Just imagine it -- an adventurer out alone, outside after dark. He shivers, wraps his tattered +Naked Mole Dog Leather Robe+ tighter around his stout frame, and bears into the wind. All of a sudden, a cloud eclipses the moon, leaving the adventurer in total darkness. All of a sudden, pin-pricks of light come shining, glaringly bright, into his night-adapted eyes. A single, blood-curdling sound comes from the nearest set of eyes.

"...mew?"
