DF Gameplay Questions / The game has changed a lot
« on: April 22, 2016, 04:59:05 am »
So the last DF I played was .34, and it was good and some forts did well and others died.

Came back after a while away to find .42, so I thought I'd give it a go.

I have no idea what's happening. The slightest bit of combat or death and all my dwarves decide to kill each other. My militia have just hacked each other up, and the lone survivor is dying of thirst but trying to kill anyone who comes near. 19 dead so far. I haven't had a fort past one year without everyone going emo at the slightest bit of anything.  Please help...

Yeah. A troll just wandered into the lower magma forge (can't work out the entrance - all the levels that pass through caverns look secure) and stood there, with forge dwarves pushing past it, until the Teachers of Paint (how I wish it didn't have that final 't') attacked.

The first recruit got strangled, but the rest, now with one helm and two steel swords to share between them, killed it very fast.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Recruits now rather impressive?

So I've just fired up DF 40.10, upgrading from a long experience with 34.11. I'm trying to get my head around the basic changes before making it more complex with the latest version.

Anyway, punctured some caverns, found a troll and it started stalking the fort. Usually, when I don't have a militia, that's a lot of dead dwarves. So this time, same approach -  appoint a 5 dwarf squad and set them on it, and build coffins.

Instead, these unarmoured, unarmed dwarves punched the troll to death. PUNCHED! Only two of them had weapon skills, but again, no weapons.

Changes to combat, or I just got lucky with this lot?

In one of my first games, in a much older version, they embarked right on top of the volcano.

So they were alive for a split second. They did take a long time to melt fully, though...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: FPS problem

Similar issue, sort of - new laptop, good specs.

40.10 started off well at ~100 FPS, which is normal for my games, which usually hit ~40 with 100+ dwarves.

However, I breached a volcano at the same time the first merchants arrived, and it plummeted to 4 FPS and stayed there till I quit. Any ideas? Is liquid flow much more detailed here, or does the caravan stuff things up?

Any ideas welcomed. Mainly as I'm on Windows 8.1, and any program taking up too many resources seems to make the entire system rather unstable....

Both the blind dwarves are farmers - I think one's a butcher and the other a planter, and there seem to be no issues. Well, no issues that should not be expected in a 5 year old fort.

The hen that sustained a broken hip in the first few months from a failed mining incident is still there, still limping, and still laying eggs. As a chicken owner, I'm impressed....

So both affected dwarves in my military managed to get injured in battle, and looking at their health logs, both are blind now. I think that was a result of the rotting...

Still, they seem quite happy...

Well, strangely enough, he was looked over by my rather useless chief medical dwarf for a bit, but is now back in service, with massive scars everywhere. EVERYWHERE....

I guess there are different strengths of poisons, from the slightly sick to the kill-you-on-contact type?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Rotten dwarf?

So, having solved the **shiny stuff** shortage by discovering another pillar, now I have rotten dwarvesgiving off huge amounts of miasma - all after contact with a very pathetic FB with poisoness gases...

Is there a way to cure or clean said dwarves? Other than soap and water, which is so complicated in DF, I don't want to go there...

I have no idea how to post imgur pictures - sadpanda seems to be dead now... However, the preview went well. Ideas for achieving more blue stuff appreciated. But only the top cavern has water, so that's a major engineering effort that I'm very inexperienced in...

What's the worst that could happen?

I have done that before, and know that there are worse things than the tangle of Forgotten Beasts tango-ing in the caverns....

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Very limited shiny stuff supply
« on: June 27, 2014, 02:36:06 am »
Due to magma, and **FUN**, I have forged exactly 4 wafers of magic shiny blue stuff. And there is no more coming out until I drain the third caverns into the magma ocean. So, for the moment, that's all I'm getting.

One moody dwarf finally made up for all the artifact rock earrings and braclets, and stole one to make a very very nice battleaxe, but what should I do with the other 3 wafers? Three helms, one sword, something nice for the dining room?

Suggestions, please.

I'd like to pick up on the 'debraining' issue - I've got my squad happily training but none of them will wear the steel caps I lovingly made for them at great cost (no iron ore on map - entirely through trading magnetite). Also using LNP...

Is there a trick or do I have to deal with all my axe lords being decapitated by lucky strikes?

Time to build a coffin, though. Dead kids in the dining hall can get messy...

DF Gameplay Questions / Strangely unhappy dwarf
« on: February 05, 2014, 04:11:39 am »
So, Tosid, my medical dwarf, is having tantrums and throwing things everywhere.

This is not unknown in my experience

The trouble is, she's had no bad thoughts, there's be no-one killed in a while, she's got a nice room, plenty of alcohol, no miasma, or anything else that sets dwarves off usually.

And EVERY OTHER DWARF is much, much happier.

I'm confused. Are some dwarves just naturally unhappy? Or is there likely another reason?
