DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Sterile, muddy caverns?

So, I embarked on what appeared to be a volcanic glacier, with no vegetation around.

Actually, there's precious little ice, but no trees.

Finally, when the population has used up my precious cargo of imported logs, I've tunnelled down to the caverns, to find them muddy but with nothing growing - no fungi, no trees, no shrubs...

Aside from having to rely on caravans to bring wood, and not being able to support grazing animals, it's not that bad, but does this sort of thing happen often, and, if so, why?

So, the "Vile Force of Darkness" did not trouble Brassburned, unfortunately.

They all pathed through the one line of weapon traps, then back again, then back again.

Still reading the battle logs - Strodno Uxsosex, Goblin Axeman, 1st Class, look 7 pages of beating;

On the first page, he managed to block most hits, but lost his left foot and right leg.  Still, he battled on, probably presenting a lower profile.
Page 2, pancreas & a shattered skull. But still going...
Page 4, right hand, right lower arm, right upper arm, just like that...
Page 5, he was looking a little sick, and there was a bit of vomit...
Page 6, there goes the left upper arm and the left upper leg...

It doesn't say what he died of, but I can take a guess...

The only reason I'm going through the battle logs is to work out why I've got three amputated goblin noses in the refuse pile...

So updated to 34.05, and suddenly the text is both all over the place and missing, sometimes vital information (yes, I would like to know if those crafts are on repeat or not without rechecking every time).

I've seen a few oblique references to it, but;

1 - is it a bug?
2 - is it limited to 34.05?
3 - is there a way to fix it? [it's there whether on truetype or not...]

When will the citizens of Brassburned learn that he is merely a smear on the underside of the entrance bridge?

Also, I'm trying to explore the vast caverns with naked, disarmed goblin axemen - So cute, seeing them wandering with a broken limb or two (the pit has a bit of a drop), smeared with their own blood and vomit... I'm turning evil, aren't I?

So I've got my limit set at 30, had 32 dwarves, was a little annoyed when another 9 turned up, as that wave included a vampire, but I reasoned it was due to the incredible number of children I had.

Now another %$# 20 have arrived, bringing my fortress to 62. 

Is the Population Cap broken, or something more sinister at work?

So, as far as I can tell, I embarked between a goblin fortress and a dinky little tower thing.

And there's a 7 wide shale block highway across the map, complete with bridge, and I hit an 'expansive cavern' at 10 z levels deep.  The caverns go down at least 30 levels.

What are my chances of surviving? Or, more specifically, what will the road do?

So I've got a fortress of 90-something happy dwarves, hoping that the nearby goblins invade soon.

It's frozen, and although there's trees and grass, there's year round snow and the surface stream and water is always frozen.

Due to a training accident, I've got a patient needing washing, there's no water in ANY of the caverns, and the only magma I've found is 180 levels below the ice.

Any ideas how I get water?

To avoid infanticide, what are my options to keep her from danger/goblins/danger rooms for a while WITHOUT disbanding the entire squad...

And for that matter, any idea why all the off duty dwarves have decided that the remote, out of the way danger room is the place to hang around?

I'm never sure if it's just me or if something subtle has been tweaked...

Hi there

Most of the conversation on the shiny new version is about undead, vampires and necromancers, but I can't find anything about some more mundane things of note/concern;

The waves of new migrants have really boring and useless skills - of the last wave of 24 I got, 6 are fishery workers, 6 are trappers.  All skills are either 1 (mostly) or 11 (rarely), with one skill of 2.  No useful skills AT ALL!! No skills in forging, mechanics, masonry or crafting. Which does limit things a bit...

I had the first two migrants with a random skill spread, but these guys are worryingly vanilla...

And the jewellers have the option to cut every rock?  I think it just stopped when I did ask for some cut gabbro, but is this a feature or a bug?

Also, we actually have the 'correct' metal bar consumption for items?  At least, my gold bins took 3 gold bars each...

Any others?

So, my last fort crumbled when EIGHT different invasions turned up, and they found the back door as the river had frozen.  My squads were killing goblins happily out front while Blizzard Men were rampaging through the crafts...  Not a happy time, but a learning experience.

Anyway, I've got a nice half cold/half temperate site with another volcanic lake and some (currently frozen) springs.

I've just borrowed down and am starting stockpiles on the second floor down.  Half and half loam and basalt.  Trouble is I just noticed little tower and goblin caps sprouting.  I have dug 5 levels down at most, and not breached anything cavern-like.  Also, no chasms, towers of shiny stuff, or anything like that apparent.

Any ideas where the spores are coming from?

So I've scumsaved the same fort 5 times now, each time after an almost identical FB (well, wildly different description, but exactly the same poisonous something) appears, and after my squads kill it, half the fort dies of rot/paralysation/suffocation/etc.

And to cap it off, they are coming from a part of the caverns that I've tried blocking off completely and I can't see any ways through, but they still appear in the main caverns easily.

Sigh.  I like the idea of FBs, but each one being easy to kill, and then wiping out my fort with its blood, etc is getting very annoying.  Very, very annoying...

Any way to cope with this, other than flooding the caverns with magma.  It would be fun, but destroy my frame rate.  Actually, I might try that...

DF Gameplay Questions / Baths....

All my dwarves are ecstatic, and having recently had a bath is one of the most common events.

I have no baths set up, and know of no way they can get wet.  I've walled off most of the river, too. I have a well, but it doesn't leak.

Should I be worried that they are sneaking off to swim unsupervised, or is it just a bit of harmless fun (until the next ambush...)?

So, desert, volcano pipe, river of a type, sparse trees...

Well, the river is frozen, the temp is hot and there are no trees.

Weird, wrong or just what can happen at times?

And what do I do for beds?????

Does this mean my parent civ is dead?

I had a trader the first autumn but nothing since.  I got migrants up until the third year, then none since.  I've got Fortress Defence installed, so could they have killed off the usual elf and human civs too, as there don't seem to be any, even though they were there on the world view screen?

And is there a definite way of telling that the motherland is dead and you're the last hope for dwarfdom.  And if so, when the fortress finally falls, is that it for the world?

Answers, or pointing me to the last discussion on this could be appreciated.

Probably been done before, but my speardwarf/bookkeeper has picked up the name;

Zulban Zulbanilir Zulash Edtul;

"Zulban Bannerjoy the Pains of Grooving"

I'm imagining him slinking around the office wearing dwarven pimpwear (troll fur coat?), big dark glasses and lots of big gold chains that he beats tigermen to death with.  A dwarven Mr T?

Any other names that invoke the 70s, or earlier?
