DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: February 05, 2014, 12:15:35 am »
Syrupfondled is a den of surprise and mystery, and rather enjoyable at present.

The evil Creeping Zombie Camel (whose name shall not be mentioned) was valiantly slain by The Snarling Armours, along with the dozen or so Dark Stranglers that were all hugging the humpless, legless, noseless undead camel. Fully 90% of the 134 dead were slain by that zombie.

Of the six moods so far, the first five were all not possession, and even though the artifacts were so-so (two rings, an amulet, a wooden armour stand and a pig iron sword) I've got two legendary stonecrafters, two legendary engravers and one legendary weaponsmith. The sixth mood was a possession, but I got an iron serrated disc out of that, so I'm happy.

And first siege now we are camel-free, one cage trap was unforbidden, and one of my legendary engravers (Zuglar) went out, and managed to take an arrow and fall into the trap she was carrying. It took a lot to finally rig up a level and release her, but finally she's in the hospital (along with ALL my cloth), hovering between life and death. It's traumatic....

Also, the elven traders that brought on the siege decided to decamp just as I'd finished recovering all the body parts, so we killed them. Interesting to see where that leads.

My Creeping Zombie Camel is actually providing better security than I get in most forts, and has seen off two Dark Strangler and two Beak Wolf sieges, although the BWs came mounted on Giant Wrens the 2nd time and only one got kicked to death by the Camel.

And my two entrance policy now means only one or two of each migrant wave gets slaughtered. Which is a lot better than before. It's usually anyone who arrives holding a crossbow...

A single squad of goblins finally made it to the map. You could sense them being somewhat worried by the scene of blood, rotting corpses and skeletons and scattered weapons covering the entire upper plateau, but they happily took on the Camel.

Three goblin lashers dead, the rest escaped, and the Camel now has no nose, hump or legs. I've switched my squad over to axes and swords in anticipation that one day, I might have to deal with it.

Meanwhile, a gigantic winged blob of salt and an eyeless stag beetle with venomous spit are the only FBs partying down in the caverns.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Selective burial

Thanks - tried that, but you're right - only still breathing dwarves.

However, I just spammed a dozen coffins in one room and he's in the 11th, so it could have been worse.

I've got an infestation of zombies, so there's a lot of dead in each migrant wave, lying on the surface and I'm not planning on touching them until I've got a military up and working.

But one badly beaten dwarf made it into the fort after surviving above ground for several seasons, only to die while being diagnosed.

Trouble is, I want to put him in a coffin. As soon as I do, there's a list of 47 other dead that get assigned above him, even though they are a) forbidden and b) have memorial slabs.

How can I get the dwarves to put the only body they have available in a coffin without me having to deploy dozens of coffins until one sticks?

Syrupfondles was an idyllic seaside retreat, with 20 happy dwarves and one content camel grazing outside.

Then we found out what the strange creeping fog does; Kadolerith Stelidtolis the One-humped Creeping Fog Zombie (Hatchetlaboured the Washed Top) has struck down eleven of the dwarves and now rules the surface, alternating violating the dead corpses and killing the stray hyena that wander onto the map.

We remainders have sealed the fortress and are looking downwards, and hoping any migrants find the emergency exit before Kadolerith does.

Hopefully things get better. Of the nine surviving dwarves, three are master jewellers. Not sure if that's good or bad, but EVERYTHING in the outpost is now encrusted.

Update; Big migrant wave. Also a lot of hyena zombies. Six were cut down, but 22 managed to make it into the fort. I'm surprised at their determination. Things must really be bad at the mountain home for them to come here...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Miasma has taken over the fort...
« on: January 24, 2014, 08:27:06 pm »
So, I left the game running while cooking lunch, as what could go wrong?

Come back to a rotting dog in the bedroom level, and purple clouds as far as the eye could see.

I've sorted the ungrateful beast, but the miasma seems here to stay - I've set up several 'baths', tried to clean them, but nothing - should I have soap here? Some of them seem to trail around a miasma around too.

And the babies have started succumbing to infection. Looks like the dog's goign to have the last laugh...

DF Gameplay Questions / Haunted areas - dead undead fear?
« on: January 20, 2014, 11:29:56 pm »
So, trying to establish a fort in a haunted area for the first time.

I don't mind the death, the undead, the pain and horror. I DO mind that dwarves can't do anything at all if there is an undead thing anywhere on the %$# map and that they run like little girls.

My present problem, however, is that there is a dead undead thing outside the small cave I've managed to excavate. They are petrified of it, even though it is dead and not moving, and so will rather die of thirst in the cold than get inside with the booze. When I form the army, they can stand on it and it doesn't do anything, and I can't kill it, 'cos it's dead.

Anyone know of what the problem might be? I'm stumped here.

After 8 years of existence, being double my previous longest, Pageconfused has fallen.

It wasn't the goblins, ferric elves, FBs, or moods. One FUN! demon (a titmouse monster) killed both shiny stuff equipped expert squads without suffering a scratch.

I am looking forward to a new challenge, but now consider webs just a little overpowered.

Just found out that a Steam FB isn't that scary. Spent four pages wailing on a child before the Romantic Oils could scramble. Kid didn't even get a headache.

Meanwhile, I'm getting spammed that another FB is caught in a pool of fire, but I've got so many to choose from roaming the caverns I have no idea which one or what's causing it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Do cavern creatures stop spawning?
« on: January 16, 2014, 02:26:38 am »
As far as I know, they spawn at the edge of the map, where the cavern is open to the outside stuff. If you haven't got many of those openings, then there's nowhere for them to come from.

No idea if you can dig out more, though. I tend to avoid them. I've got five FB's partying in my caverns at possible and am not opening them anytime soon.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your first/most recent artifact?
« on: January 15, 2014, 12:50:12 am »
I think my first ever artifact was a stone chair. Not exciting, but it was the first. That was about 5 years ago.

Recently, though, we just had a tetrahedrite amulet with many kinds of leather. Before that, a child produced Frezyfancied, the brush of pregnancies, a metal ring, that disturbed me greatly.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to take care of a crippled baby
« on: January 12, 2014, 12:41:15 am »
Dwarves don't care. My militia captain bought her baby into the danger room, and then carted the poor little thing around until it died of two broken legs and a missing spleen.

Hence why I've only got male dwarves in my military now.

Also, in my current fort, aside from accidents with goblins, cave-ins, clowns, drowning and MAGMA, I've lost three babies as their parents basically abandoned them in the dining room and they died of thirst while everyone else watched.

Not natural parents...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do I military?
« on: January 11, 2014, 11:34:53 pm »
I'll add my problem here - my ground troops are awesome and recently acquitted themselves well against some clowns. The archers, though, just don't work for me.

Currently I've got a large goblin invasion, and two of the poorly trained marksdwarves are standing outside supposedly 'waiting for archery practise'. I've got both a barracks and a range for them, but I've had one bolt fired at it in the last two years.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I've got them on the same training regime as the axedwarves.

My military survived two sieges by staying inside and not diving off the magma bridge.

I finally sent them out to deal with a minotaur. The swordsdwarf immediately cut off both its arms, kicked it in the throat, and now the whole squad is chasing the monster around the map, Benny Hill style.

At least the minotaur is now 'armless... :)

My legendary military strode out over the bridge over the magma pool, looking to kill the lone remaining goblin crossbowman.

I didn't expect three of them to dive off the bridge to avoid bolts.

The goblin only has one arm, for crying out loud....
