DF Gameplay Questions / Re: just HOW MUCH jewelry can one bed hold!?!
« on: June 07, 2011, 03:28:06 am »
That's great to know.

Often when awaiting the first caravan of traders, I set a mass order of encrusting, and often end up with one mug holding almost all the gems, and none on the others.

Trading with one mug worth more than all my other trinkets is a lot simpler but not as satisfying...

Given the number of bearded dwarves running around wearing dresses and short skirts, I wonder about the entire world.

Perhaps goblins are the 'normal' ones?

He's gone mad - good thing I chained up a war leopard next to him...

But he only had 4 things on his list, none repeated, and anyway, I have several hundred of all metals on the map and the same number of blocks (preparing for something mega) - he already had the iron bars, cut gems and silk cloth, so this one was a little strange.

Oh, well.  Someone will clean the blood away sometime...  And given his likes, it would have been an iron quern...

One of my better metalcrafters has gone fey - yay, legendary barrels...

Anyway, he's crying out for cloth (already got), rock bars (got iron) and body parts.  I've slaughtered the token animals, and there is hoof, horn and bone a'plenty waiting for him.  No dice.

He likes deer horn.  Tough, we don't, and have never had, any deer.

Every other moody dwarf has used whatever bone, horn or hoof on hand.  Are some more picky than others, or is it likely to be something else?

I had some idea, but I thought the 'secret stuff' was something UNDER the clowns...

One of my first forts - 31.15? - embarked on a site with an open pillar of blue stuff.  When you get evil laughs from hell as soon as you unpause, you know something's wrong.  That ended very badly.

And then there's the time I found a very, very expensive sword in my stocks, but 60 levels down.  So I decided to go and get it.  It was an experience - a painful one, but an experience...

DF Gameplay Questions / Strange butchering?
« on: June 02, 2011, 03:49:13 am »
So, one of the new migrants is a hunter, and he was out hunting cavy sows before I knew what was going on.

Watch him finally kill one after wounding most of the herd, and he proudly dumps the corpse in the butchers.

The butcher arrives soon, and takes the corpse and dumps it in the refuse pile.  No other conflicting orders, nothing in the way, corpse still warm - what gives?

WHAT IS IT WITH THE SOCK FETISH!?!?

And even worse is the name - so disturbing on many levels, especially when you consider IT'S A SOCK!!!

Couragetools took a turn for the worst.

Accidental magma spillage started an impressive wildfire, taking out the outside food, wood and booze piles, killing the trader and burning the fat off most of the others.  Then a river diversion accidentally flowed into the magma pool, with great hilarity ensuing.

Interestingly, it's about then all the animals turned on the dwarves.  Also, the jeweller went to sleep in a flooding level and drowned in her sleep, and the other miner beat his pet chicken to death.

But because of the mist from the river flowing into the volcano, they were all very happy, despite the rotting muddy corpses...

Couragetools looked good - sandy plain with short volcano, and magma surface 1 z level down.

Channel out a bit of the volcano for building rock (I want a castle around the volcano) Tobar the Miner somehow manages to cause a collapse and finds both a lava lake and raw shiny stuff, under 40 levels of magma...

It's hard with only one miner.  This may be the first fort in a very long time I'll be glad to see migrants...

Still, I'm paving over the magma surface, and will have copper and glass weapons soon.  Possibly with only 6 dwarves.

When I found shiny stuff in Deathcrafts, the dwarves went nuts, and three artifacts in a row were made from it - a buckler, a throne and a crutch.

The Throne is the best - The Courteous Bolts - only because it has a goblin being struck down on it.  Worth a little under 800,000, and I've made an engraved two level high temple to it - it's sitting in a one level high pedestal, with 40 wooden chairs facing it.

Ceilingcat has crumbled, but rather fittingly, it was overcome by 40 or so elite White Tigermen.

The Bridge Protecting Us From Invasion didn't work, as, strangely, a Rhino was standing on it.  Which makes sense if you've played enough forts.

I've also removed the Fortress Defence Mod, as some invasions are good, but I was getting a rather large Vile Force of Darkness every season, right after a merchant appeared.  See merchant - activate burrow was how it worked.  It's hard to run a fort when invaded that often...

After two forts cleaned out very very early by Tigermen (thanks, Fortress Defence Mod), I finally got organised, and my green glass and copper weapon traps, with additional wooden weapons, worked well enough to herd most of them into the waiting cages.

Not only do I have a selection of copper, bronze and steel weapons and shields for The Fed Axes, but I'm finding out that Tigermen need to drink, and am enjoying watching them die of thirst in cages.

Evil, or what?

Edit;  Tigerman bodies don't get dumped - I have to put them in coffins to get rid of them.... Serves me right...

I'm thinking of building new fort entirely out of microcline but I'm not exactly sure if it's going to hurt my eyes too much

Better than my attempt with cinnabar and olivine...

Anyway, the name of my latest fort both disturbs and amazes me;

How can I live up to this name? Or should I not even attempt to get there?

Frankly, all that's outstanding at the moment is the sheer amount of dead lungfish refuse, which is overwhelming the entire fortress...

First Elephants, then Carp, now Badgers - what will the next most unexpectedly lethal animal be?

Hopefully never elves...

Deathcrafts passed it's 7th year rather quietly.

I've had so many sieges that the names started repeating (up until siege 5, they were numbered Attempted Abductions, but since then, the Siege of Squeezing (twice), the Onslaught of Maws (twice) and the Angry, Crazed and Slaughtering Sieges (once each).

But 18 months ago, they stopped.  Merchants started being able to reach me, and the only 'siege' in that time was three bowgoblins with a speargoblin leading them.  They could only reach my fort through the Trapped Tunnel of Doom (tm) but wandered around a bit on the other side, then left.  Then a slightly larger group arrived, killed one of the merchant's guards and then left.

My Militia are feeling neglected, and the odd Crundle, and Elk Bird aren't doing too much.  I've modded it to have 100 as the top population - could that be limiting assaults, or have I worn them out?
