The only way into Pageconfuse is over two bridges that cross the local magma pool. With an invasion, a) burrow, wait for stragglers, b) play around with levers and cheer every time you get a goblin into the MAGMA!

I don't send the military out so often since they have a habit of dodging off bridges into said magma. Not fun. They also manage to drown in the small stream as well.

Was going to give up Keyswamp early on, as the volcano was being difficult and it was in a serene environment.

Then TWO master jewellers arrived in the first immigration wave. I was able to buy the entire first caravan with a few encrusted buckets. Then my token sacrifice to the MAGMA gods managed to outrun the flowing goodness and I've got the magma forges firing.

The kobolds have been annoying enough, and some dark stranglers arrived before the wall was finished. A mason sneaked out and built the two extra walls just in time. Then I got tired of them hanging around and tried DF liquids to wash them away. Ended up washing them into the fort (oh, THOSE walls weren't finished either!). Cue Benny Hill music and the last ten dwarves arrived were conscripted and managed to kill all nine stranglers.

And it's the first volcanic embark in a longish time where I've had more than two metals total. My last fort had copper and aluminium, so I was reduced to melting down goblinite. No flux or coal, but I'll deal with that later. Gem-encrusted <#gold crafts#> ahoy!

Dippedpully has fallen, after a good 5 or so years. The curious cause was the mining of drowned militia and goblinite from the frozen moat in Midwinter. I'd tunnelled into it from the fungi level mainly to reclaim some named weapons that fell to the bottom. Even though there was no magma, and the ice had never melted before late spring, it suddenly all melted exactly on Midwinter, and the 40 or so dwarves engaged in salvage all drowned.

And the FPS is sitting around 4.

Damn climate change...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Memorials...
« on: December 25, 2013, 03:00:28 am »
So, in Dippedpully, we've had a lot of drownings, and despite my attempt to drain all the surface water into the caverns, there's a lot of bodies feeding the fishes.

And a lot of memorial slabs in the crypts.

I've finally had a read of them. Most say "Slayer of Elves", "Devoted Father & Husband", "Devoted Husband" - good stuff like that.

My old chief medical dwarf only got "Friend of Goats".

"Utterstake" was carved into the cliffs above the open crater of a volcano.

It prospered, despite only having copper ore - nothing else. Just starting to put windows in the rooms to overlook the magma, when goblins & trolls attacked. I knew that my emergency exit was a weak point, but stationed the military above it. Trolls & goblins were slaughtered easily, but, looking again, so were my dwarves. The military were happily killing EVERYONE!!!

I'm still mystified, but it's sure one way to lose a fortress...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Geting bodies from ponds...
« on: December 12, 2013, 02:43:05 am »
Thanks for the ideas - I don't usually use pumps, but in this case, I'll give it a go.

I had a disturbing experience while pumping magma a few forts ago and don't really want to back there any time soon...

If you're in cold biome, I would wait for the lake to freeze, then "mine" the ice

Ummm - I can mine it, but then I get ice and the body is gone. That was how I cleaned out the kobold bodies early on. I think I need to bury these guys esp as they are starting to haunt the chickens...

DF Gameplay Questions / Geting bodies from ponds...

So the Village of DippedPully is going along nicely, with goblins resisted and an FB roaming the caverns.

There's even a lovely pond inside the walls for fishing and washing and stuff.

The problem is, during an early goblin incursion, two of the recruits either died & fell in, or fell in and died. Either way, the dwarves are getting a little spooked by the rotting faces of their friends staring at them from 4 ft of water.

Any practical way of rescuing the bodies without destroying the lake, as it's quite pleasant?

One of them has just come down with melancholy, too...

The world is only 58 years old, and I've only had the one fort - maybe a few survived? I'm not sure how, though...

The metalcrafter is now running around naked in the dining room... It's strange - the parents are starving themselves to death in an emo way, and superkid is happily churning out exceptional quality crafts next door.

I'll ready some coffins, I guess...

So there's a kid, who is both a legendary miner and legendary stonecrafter, and three adults, all miserable about the decay of a friend in their previous fort (I checked - it's not my last fort - they all died of a bad case of magma, anyway).

Any idea if this is the new normal, or has something a little unique happened?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the usefulness of stock as an ambush warning device, or the fun games they play with invading FBs...

Or am I the only one...?

Coboltlens in still chugging along on a rather boring glacier...

The foundry on z-level -18 has been producing sufficient metals that I'm making platinum and gold bins to free up storage space; the mayor is happy with the platinum statue of a large roach in his dining room, so much so he's over the death of his baby (thirst, in the dining room) and his wife (vampire); a ghostly macedwarf is getting violent with her hauntings, and I can't engrave anything to her, as I have no idea who she is or where she came from, but she's not one of mine; a dwarven trading caravan finally made it through the seasonal assaults, whereby assorted races rush up to the outer traps, then run away; sea otters commit suicide on the traps too.

Artefacts are; two earrings (Liontwisted the Safety of Violence the more notable); a ring (Riddledphrases); a green glass bracelet; a mug; a sphalerite drum and a magnetite door. At least the door can't be used partying...

The dwarven traders arrived at the same time as two goblin ambushes, headed by some human crossbowmen. Very multi-racial.  The traders were killed, and the goblins ran after the humans minced themselves in the traps.

Although after a season of looting the dead, we did find the the baby Thob, who had been noticed being rather thirsty in the dining room, and who had been missing for a week, or at least it's dehydrated body just outside the dining room. How anyone missed it is beyond me. Given that Thob's parents are the militia commander and Cog, the one-armed mayor, this should play out well.

And despite setting the fort population limit to 50, we just hit 84 and have been made a barony... Time to get a military trained...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Stockpile bug or feature?
« on: December 13, 2012, 04:13:37 am »
Hi

So only the last couple of forts, I've discovered something strange.

Continually building and removing a stone wall to stop zombies getting in but letting in the first few waves of migrants (yes, clumsy, but I have plans for a more permanent solution when I have more than 10 dwarves), it seems that when a wall is deconstructed, the contents of any stockpiles nearby are sucked into a pile just outside where the wall was.

I though it might be a weird modelling of the positive air pressure inside a fortress, but this time, there's no roof, so that's not right.

In case it's related, a dwarf was building a new wall nearby, and somehow ended up on top of the wall next to it - a position impossible to get to unless he flew.

Any ideas?

Starting on a glacier, had issues working out you have to build rather than dig steps between the ice and rock, but things seem ok.

Despite the embark thingy saying no wood and me bringing along a small pre-milled forest, there's a thin line of trees near the map's edge.

And somehow I must have slipped or pushed the wrong key, as my 10 - 20 z-level exploratory stairway to find the top of the first caverns has ended up at -20 z (that's about 140 down) and there's warm rock below and beside, so I may just go to magma smelting.

Also managed to cut through the lowest caverns just above the magma layer, and before I could wall it off, nice, innocent cave blobs wandered in. McForester was running in panicked circles, trapped by two blobs, and then a random mason wandered by to pick up a rock for a chair (134 z-levels from the workshop?), and punched and killed a blob on it's way past. So I put McForester into the military by herself and got her attack the remaining blob. Somehow they ended up falling down quite a number of stairs and despite a broken arm, it looks like she landed on the cave blob, which, from the fluid everywhere, popped.

That excitement over, I've finally put Fortress Defence in, so i'm looking forward to an invasion, as these have been missing from 34.11 for a while for me...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How did your fortress die?
« on: December 12, 2012, 05:27:07 am »
When I started playing this version, after a longish break, I had a nice, compact, fully functioning fortress with a volcano and a waterfall, and the only death was the young orphan I sent to direct the magma into the tunnels under the forges.

All is well, then out of the blue, someone was upset that one of their masterpieces was destroyed. I still have no idea what it was or how it got broken. Next thing, McPissed-off Craftdwarf punches a cat and it dies. The owner of the cat punches someone else, next thing the legendary dining room is a mass battle, and although there's only one death resulting, it was Mr Popular, everyone's best friend, and now everyone's getting depressed, and then it was only a matter of time until someone destroyed the floodgate separating the river from the fortress. Then goblins attack and the only dwarves left alive are safe in their airtight rooms, under about 7 levels of water. The last one tried swimming to the stairs but drowned halfway...

It was mesmerising to watch...
