DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: February 07, 2011, 02:47:45 am »
Just abandoned Deatharches.  Volcano, woodland, brook, dolomite - everything a dwarf could want.

Despite having coal, magnetite and flux, steel production was fraught, as the industry never quite gelled... Despite all on [r], always running pout of one component at the worst time...

But despite a kick-arse wall and cage traps coming out my ears, I was killed seven times by goblins, scumsaving each time, to see if I could survive any longer.  Nope.  Incompetent militia, dwarves falling down holes into the reservoir and a horse foal killing TWO animal trainers, it was as though the fortress was cursed, or at least, living up to it's name.

And just before it crumbled, a gemcutter did manage to produce a nice opal window, so it didn't all go wrong...

So I don't use Danger Rooms.  Still learning, and pressure pads are a little beyond me, and, anyway, I still don't like killing babies...

But my militia SUCK.  Two years of training, and some battles against minor pests, and the whole squad are killed by two speargoblins.  This on top of 4 dead and two maimed earlier by one macegoblin.

Aside from danger rooms, how else to you get the little maggots to learn to fight? The only time I've ever had a legendary fighter in 6 months of playing is just before they were ripped apart by a forgotten beast...

Sigh.  First marksdwarves who won't fire anything, now axe dwarves that can't slice a kitten...

Re the FB levels - while not 'broken' it would be nice to be able to 'eyeball' the likelihood of mass dwarf slaughter, tantrum spiral, and fall of the fortress from something more than whether the FB is made out of something soluble or edible...

I just lost a fun (in the real sense of the word) fortress to an FB that was almost identical to the previous - a giant hairless snail, one with a fiery breath, the other with a paralysing spit .... The first one was killed by a macedwarf and a kitten.  The second killed half the squad, and paralysed the rest, resulting in them starving, etc; next thing the mayor is strangling a child in the dining room...

Anyway, got the Upright Sword a few fortresses ago, and managed to get it, to see what would happen.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Finding a specific item I made...

[z], to the summary screen, and scroll along the top to [stocks].

Scroll down categories on the left with the -/+ keys, and items on the right with arrow keys.

Tab to change from summary (4 iron beds) to individual items - find yours in there, and [z] to zoom to the item in question.

A little overwhelming at first, but quite useful...

DF Gameplay Questions / Block storage
« on: February 04, 2011, 09:01:49 pm »
So, lots of rock in the upper fort, a castle of obsidian bocks planned, and magma forges some 10 levels down.

Bar stockpiles next to the forges have blocks turned off.

Right next to the masons that's churning out blocks in the upper fort is a stockpile for blocks, with bars turned off. Interestingly, despite having nothing but orthoclase and obsidian within 5 levels, there's a lot of microcline being shaped...

$##%^& dwarves still cart the blasted blocks halfway across the fort, filling up the bar stockpiles and stocking them a long way from the castle construction, while the adjacent block stockpile stays empty. :(

Any ideas, suggestions, etc?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Reasonable Mayor?
« on: February 01, 2011, 10:56:38 pm »
I had a long-term mayor on a 5 year long fort, who liked adamantite, slade, large gems and ballista arrows.

In all that time, all she asked for were ballista arrows, and an occasional ban on exporting large gems.

Compared with what it could have been...

Just embarked in a glacial volcano.  Things going okay, but difficult, until suddenly skeletal musk-oxen kill three dwarves, all my miners.  Make that 4...5... 6..

The expedition leader, a woodcutter, is the last dwarf left.  He leaves the safety of the walled-in fortress to recover the used socks of his fallen comrades.  A kitten accompanies him... He finally realises that he should probably leave the socks where they are and construct walls to keep him safe.  He somehow manages this, despite claiming rocks from near the skeletal elk, and walling himself out of the fortress twice - a harsh lesson to learn in this frigid climate...

But he manages, and, clinging to a pick, carves out a new room.  Counting the three plump helmets left, and with no fields to grow others, he sets out to find the last remaining donkey...

Zaneg is his name, and he shall survive

Sod it.  I'm going to play this fortress until Zaneg snuffs it, or migrants arrive...  Well, three brave souls arrived - two gem setters and a fisherdwarf.  They'll help.  Even though one is holed up by a skeletal elk...

Atu the Goblin has spent the last three years living under my bridge.  It's completely sealed with walls on all sides, and the bridge on top - he fell in during a frenzied assault, and I thought he'd starve or die of thirst, or mould, or something...

Nope.  Still fat, too.  He's got 9 squares to pace around in, a tree, a rotten troll's left leg, the skeleton of another goblin, and a pile of giant copper armour and weapons.  I assume he licks dew off the tree.  Or is still chewing on that leg...

I imagine he's got the skeleton dressed up in the troll ware and holds conversations with it...  How come merchants go made after a season locked away, but he's fine?

Also a sad FB, composed of red sand, with wings.  After a panicked scramble of all my squads as he flew over my walls, the first shot with an axe cut it in half...

I have a related question.

If you dig out an up/down stairway and accidentally dig it out over an empty space can creatures enter through there?

Based on recent experience, flying FB's do.  Based on this experience, they will spawn very very soon and be in the dining room before you're notified...

Drunkenbridges survives, with over 2000 booze - I set a magma forge on Barrel [R] and the brewers on Brew [R] and didn't look there for two days...

There's a goblin trapped under the bridge, out of atom smashing range but trapped.  And he's only got one arm.  Hope he dies of thirst soon, although I have a feeling goblins don't need food or water.

And my militia commander has just mustered for duty with three splinted limbs.  That's commitment.

Also had the worse ambush ever - four kobolds leapt out at a human merchant, and the one guard killed them all. At least I'll get a good price for their loincloths...

I'm trying a well planned and organised fort this time - inspired by the random gen'ed name "Drunkenbridge" I planned for a bridge, and it led from there.

First moody dwarf was a possession, at the same time as 25 migrants appearing on the other side on the major river.  Anyway, in the confusion, he grabbed a leatherworks, two bolts of leather, and made....

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It sets the tone of the fortress perfectly...

First name on the name gen screen - Drunkenbridge! That adequately describes the middle part of DF, where bridges and booze are two of the more important features.

And Trappedtombs is the end part - what's the most fitting name for the start?

Bravenet has reached the insanely busy part, as under-represented professions go moody (I've got two glass forges, as when someone occupies one, they invariably want whatever glass I don't have), goblins invade (a little goblin-on-goblin violence was enlightening - any ideas what's going on? (Details below)), the elves have finally turned up and want blood, or sap or something, and I've just discovered a "curious underground structure" peopled with undead slugmen and tigermen.... I don't think I'll explore it yet...

Two ambushes turned up side-by-side, on the other side of my artificial lake, and while I was watching the dwarven caravan deal with the third ambush, on the other side of the map, I noticed combat reports while no fighting was happening - zoom in on it, and the two northern ambushes have slaughtered each other, leaving a one-armed macegoblin who wandered into a trap...

Still, I've got coal, and have just found gold, silver and copper in a granite layer between caverns one and two, so that's a good addition, and I built my main bridge over the gorge with a substantial overhang, and invaders tend to gather on the edge and then get squashed.  Good fun.

But either the elves, the goblins, or the undead party in the basement will get me - I wonder which....
