DF Gameplay Questions / Underpowered dragons?
« on: September 02, 2010, 05:32:59 am »
Recently I was hit by a dragon attack
I had some cage traps, so I wasn't worried, but I wanted to know how well my Danger room trained military would react to combat
Using multiple save files
Round 1: Marksdwarf pierces the dragons heart with his first shot, and its down for the count before my melee can even close
Round 2: I had my range disabled, but a passing off duty ranger took a pot shot, again, ripping through its head, again killing in one hit
Round 3: Finally with no marksdwarves around to interfere, I set upon the dragon with the full vengeance of my 20 or so mix of axes, spears, swords, maces and whatnot
about 20 frames later, the dragon lies in several pieces on the ground, having let off a single blast of dragon fire (which was blocked)
Round 4: I send my single militia commander in.... and he proceeds to make short work of the dragon, sustaining no injuries whatsoever... On the other hand, the dragon got 4 hits in, all of which were blocked =/

I now have the dragon stuck in my cage, and I'm wondering what to do with it
I already have a dragon, so is it possible to get both and chain them up to my front walls to act as super special awesome guard dogs?
One of them managed to kill a couple of dwarves b4 it got caught by a cage and the other.... I just described the... "battle"
Also, I am currently in the process of setting up an arena, and so far I have about 15 gobbos, 4 or so elite leaders, 2 dragons and a pair of trolls
1. Will the dragons fight each other if I set them in my arena with all my goblins?
2. Who do you think will win, the pair of dragons, or the Goblin Alliance?
3. Any other suggestions for what to do with my pair?

and fyi, I'm sure that danger room also trains fighting
cause my dwarves in the danger room hit legendary fighters even before they were legendary shields
And it might have some effect on how well they learn weapon skill, cause I've also got all of my military dwarves with legendary in all their weapons
admittedly, they didn't get that till they finished lengendary in armour, shield, fighter and dodger
so maybe it was just my dwarves were just that awesome by the point they finally decided to swing their weapons around

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dying Dwarf...
« on: September 02, 2010, 02:13:15 am »
get rid of all the labors except for your medical related ones
diagnosis, surgery setting bones, suturing, dressing wounds, and feed patient/prisoners
This is cause feeding and watering injured dwarves is pretty much at the bottom of the priority list, so for example, if theres some refuse to be hauled around, a dwarf would rather do that then keep their comrade alive

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Does magma evaporate?
« on: September 02, 2010, 02:11:07 am »
Magma pools and magma pipes are the same thing
its just that the game calls them pools, but they're actually pipes
Also, why not simply make obsidian?
reroute a river or something into the room you want to use, and bam, instant obsidian

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't find flux stone and coal
« on: September 02, 2010, 02:09:29 am »
When you embark, you should look at the different types of stone you get
Go to the DF wiki for the types of flux stones, but off the top of my head, they're limestone, chert and marble, but I'm sure there are others
Bituminous coal only appaers in sedimentary levels, like rock salt, limestone and chert
They appear white on your embark screen
maybe you embarked there instead?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: giant corkscrew stockpile?
« on: September 01, 2010, 06:03:50 am »
While yes, its simpler to place 1 stockpile that accepts all 3, its not particularly smart
and Why?
You're always going to be short on Block storage space, if you're anything like me
quite simply, whatever stockpile you use will contain blocks, and ONLY blocks, because you have just that many blocks
by the time you get 100 Z levels worth of pipe sections and corkscrews, rest assured, that stockpile will be full to the brim with nothing but blocks, leaving no room for anything else

Yes, I made that mistake with food and barracks
Woo, my dwarves have a food stockpile, so they don't have to leave the barracks!... wait, its full of seeds =[

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Individual Combat Training

[r] gives you the combat reports
and just set up a danger room to train up your dwarves
Just search around this forum, you'll find at least 5-6 posts discussing these
God knows I've explained it at least that many times...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Need manager but how?
« on: September 01, 2010, 12:01:06 am »
its not [m], first you have to go to the units menu before you can access the managers menu with [m]
Also, all you need to do is assign him a chair in your dining hall and he'll use that as a study

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Siege
« on: August 31, 2010, 11:56:39 pm »
How do you know there aren't any elves?
They hide just as well as goblin ambushes, or better, as far as I know
unfortunately I haven't been able to piss them off well enough for them to declare war, (despite having slaughtered my way through the past... 4-5 caravans =[)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: building screw pump, but graves in the way
« on: August 31, 2010, 11:54:59 pm »
If you mean a grave stockpile, you have go [p]
  • to get to remove stockpile

if its a graveyard... that's horribly disrespectful, but I think you can just [q]
  • them away as well

not sure, cause I haven't tested it, but I can see on the graves it has an
  • Remove building sign

as an atom smasher or to split up your opponents?
And what kind of dwarf are you, not engaging in melee,
THAT BE ELF WORK
to be honest, I have a squad of marksdwarves, but unfortunately, they're all attached tot heir bows or cross bows
I've trained then to legendary hammer, so they can hold their own, its just.... yeah
I keep them in a nice walled off tower

and what do you mean underground towers?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Center on titan?
« on: August 31, 2010, 11:39:29 pm »
You can also use PGdown or PGup
Alzo, you can look at its description, generally it should say whether it can fly or not
and ooh, a flying titan, I feel sorry for you
well, as long as you don't have any vents, you hsould be alright =/
I've gotten a couple vents all nice and walled up WITH grates, and then I find out about building destroying flyers =[

DF Gameplay Questions / Slayer???
« on: August 31, 2010, 06:24:29 am »
Recently one of my dwarves decided to name his Crossbow
when I checked it out, under the description, it says
Two notable kills
The troll, D 1057
The troll, D 1057

One other kill
The cave dragon D 1057 (I got hit by a siege then, I guess)

Slayer
Zon Minestabbed the Dwarf, Three Kills

What does the Slayer portion mean?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Miasma from Owned Food
« on: August 31, 2010, 05:52:07 am »
So as long as I don't unlock the HFS and keep my staircase down to my fort totally fortification-ed, all I have to worry about is randomly generated flying titans =/
Fortunately, the main ways into and outside of my fortress are long and winding, AND roofed, so flyers would have to brave the chokepoints I've made,
but how exactly do I add a vent above, for example my 6 butcheries trying to slaughter their way through about 10 pages of animals without getting them all killed?
